Likewise. I recently went absolutely flat out for 3 km or so, the bike refused to cross 125. Although the engine didn't sound harsh or anything. I weigh somewhere around 100-105 and i wasn't crouching, but given that people go on about how it hits the rev limiter quickly in 6th gear, i was hoping i would hit it sometime as well, but the tacho never went above 9600-ish. I'm using motul 300v engine oil and fueled mostly with speed 97 (or shell super unleaded sometimes, as the shell pump is closer to my house), so fuel and engine oil are most definitely not an issue.

    • chain sound

Hi guys this is in reply to all post regarding that annoying "chaak- chaak" chain sound which comes at certain RPMs, well i feel its coming from the infamous ktm timing chain, please help me by contributing your inputs for the same , I got the chain tightened, swing arm length corrected by the SVC guys but the sound still persists.

Also what i have noticed is a slight oil leak on the left hand side of the engine just above the engine number plate and there is brown colour oil dripping from an inch above the engine number, what a horrible experience.

None of my other 30yr sports bikes even have given me this problem, and the other thing is that i feel the guys at the service station are not qualified enough to take care of advanced problems like this.

The riding experience so far has been pretty disappointing ..... please help

        Dishayu,

You won't find hitting the limiter in 6th all that easy if yours is a newer lot bike with the new ecu map.or if you have had the ECU flashing done in the svc.
I have personally experienced this after my ECU was flashed and the new map was installed. The bike struggles at around 125-128 and takes a lot of effort to reach 131-132 where the rev limiter sets in. So the power doesn't cut off as drastically as it used to in 6th or still does till the 5th gear.

Before the flashing I used to hit the rev limiter in 6th quite frequently. Not anymore. The limiter comes in gradually in 6th may be(as in the CBR250 R) and is not sudden as in the other gears.

Regarding the engine harshness I reported on my way back from Pune, I don't know what could be the reason. It is felt especially in 6th gear where the revs rise after 9000 but the bike doesn't propel itself proportionately. I weigh 72 Kgs and am nearing 9k on the odo and I have heard from people that many guys have had engine issues at around that mark. I'll take it to the svc this weekend and hope for the best.

How much mileage are you guys able to pull outta this monstrous beauty??
Also, comparing to the CBR250R, if any have experienced or gathered knowledge on/about both, what ups & downs can you list?? ( appreciate the excuse if an inappropriate query to this thread, but I hope it's understood )
I am getting 36-38 (reserve to reserve) in city riding. Add another 2-3 kmpl on the highways. ODO indicated mileage gives a higher figure as it is updated every 800 meters.

As for cbr250r, it is completely a tourers delight that does not mean it can not be used as a commuter.
KTM is a street bike, best for commuting and easy handling. It can be taken for tours too, but comfort level is lower than cbr.
CBR will give a mileage of around 25-30 kmpl in city and 30-35 on highways.

The new map came out after i bought the bike but i suspect that they flashed it to the newer version during the free service. I have done close to 1500km, never hit the rev limiter in 6th (didn't try before first service). I'll try and get the old map back on my next service. Please do keep us posted how it goes at your service. I guess i'll have to get the duke 390 when that comes out... i find duke 200's performance quite underwhelming after riding it for a couple of months now :\

Anyways so what im getting is 33-40kmpl in city. Highway it returns 45kpl often 48-50 kpl too.
Downsides may vary person to person. What i think on Duke is the tyres. Soft compound and nice but minute you go in a little fine gravel it looses its bite. Well being quite slick they'll do so but a good brand than MRF will do some good. If one is a tourer surely will opt for another ones. Although guys have been to ladakh on stock ones. I wont compare it with CBR. Its a diff thing. Duke is bruff. Its awesome.

                  i agree with u
the tire looses its grip all of sudden under gravel or light sand particles
i always slow down whenever i see the gravel

ive clocked 3000 kms and already the rear tire seems to wear out pretty fast
but i guess it will last for some 4000kms more

                  Some observations:

The road : Fantastic stretch of tarmac the NH4. Lovely winding roads with nary a sight of a pothole. These are the roads one buys bikes to ride on.

The bike : Lovely round the corners. Handled great. Did not huff much at all near the Lonavla climbs barring one corner where power loss was very apparent.I had to downshift to 2 to get going.

Maintaining 110 is no problem with the Duke. Anything more for sustained periods and you know the engine is not as happy Also I was not to perturbed with the windblasts really. It was pretty serene and smooth.

The riding position is beautiful for long stretches. Also the seat, surprisingly, didn't bother.I was expecting a sore bum but it was ok.

On the way back I had to refuel at the Dehu road pump. When I asked what is the octane number , I was told '2'. But seriously was it 87 RON ? Because I could notice something strange on the way back.

The bike refused to go beyond 120 and while I was cruising at 97-98 and twisted the throttle, the engine suddenly would start sounding very very harsh and the bike won't immediately add speeds. Whether this was because of the fuel or was a soon to be seized engine's cry, I know not.

if u got adjusted in the city and then when u take it for a long drive u wont be getting any butt aches (personal experience )

even when i brake i get a hisss kind of sound even with slight pull of the front brake and under full braking and when the bike nearly comes to stop i get a loud squeak noise
when the suspension travels down almost half way down

and the braking has reduced a lott

i get a small stretch of highway everyday on my daily route to college where i rip the bike
and the bike goes easily upto 130 with no difficulty
im using motul 7100 and speed petrol

But sometimes i feel the bike very harsh when it comes near 8500-9000 RPM and feels as if the engine is gonna explode anytime soon
                  but this isnt a problem
i guess its the nature of the bike

and lately i was thinking of getting the ECU flashed at the SVC but hearing DOGA's Experience after flashing gave me a second thought and my bike has no stalling problem so didnt want to flash the ECU either

                  • Why do our Duke 200 smell of Fuel ...................so much ?

As if there is a genuine contact of the fuel with the air..........and the fuel evaporates a lot from the tank .

My Cousin and Myself, we both got Dukes and we became Dukes of Hazard.......but this Fuel issue is not helping unfortunately

True...getting your nose close to tamk lid it smells more. Weird than normal...i think. Even after riding to a stop it smells a lot.
                            Even i think why..

As per petrol issues i fill Speed i guess its 91RON also the normal unleaded ones are RON 91 too.
If so is the additives in Speed only that make the change??
And regarding the ECU flashing. Im not in favour of doing that hearing the experiences and the basic point that it smoothens a low end and hiccups have been rectified which i like actually...being the duke's monstrous nature. The svc guy urged a lot of times to flash the ecu i thought a couple of times too see the difference once and still im doubleminded. What would they be doing flasing it?? Doga i guess or some guy said the rev limiter has been shifted to 10000. Also if the ecu is being remapped actually to produce diff or low torque curves at low rpms removing the hiccups etc.
