After one and half years and 15000 kms run I've been getting "High coolant temperature " warning on the console for the first time since the last two days with just regular usage. Is it time to change the coolant. in the manual it said coolant change is to be done at 20000 kms.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Hello,
I am a beginner and I have decided to buy my first motorcycle. I have shortlisted KTM Duke 200 and Suzuki Gixxer. I need your help very much. How is it to own and gain riding experience with a Duke 200? Moreover I happen to read a review of the bike on visordown, a UK based website, which mentioned that the MRF tires are not good and are not safe for wet conditions. One of my friends also complain that his duke's rear tire drifts a bit even when turning normally in the streets. What are all the other things I should consider while buying my first bike? Will it be a good choice to opt for duke as my first bike? or do I need to start from a 150cc and then upgrade to duke? My friends have warned me about the maintenance and that the bike needs caring like a baby.
Please help.

May be Gixxer or fz v2.0
No issue in owning a duke200 as first bike but be safe whatever bike you buy.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
can you please tell me why is that you are suggesting to start with a 150cc bike? I have ridden a cbr 250r for 12km and I felt that to be easy to ride. So I feel I can handle duke 200 also. Please reply to my queries. It would be of much help.Originally posted by Vysakh.M.S View PostI would suggest a 150cc motorcycle as first bike.

If u can handle the power then its fine u can go with duke200.Originally posted by srinath2494 View Postcan you please tell me why is that you are suggesting to start with a 150cc bike? Why i suggested 150cc is that it will be a good base to start with (my opinion). It differs from person to person.
I have seen people who buy duke and rash drive and finally making a mess. For themselves and other people.
Whatever cc u buy, be safe yourself and be aware of others too.
Since you found cbr250 to be easy, then no issue... If your heart says duke200, go for it.
Well, you like upright riding position i guess. Is it correct?

Is 12kms enough to give you an experience how "all" the bikes handle and perform?Originally posted by srinath2494 View Postcan you please tell me why is that you are suggesting to start with a 150cc bike? Are you ready for 24bhp of raw power and the immense power to weight ratio that duke has ?
Are you ready for the maintenance costs in later run?
Sorry, but just riding a sports tourer for 12kms is not enough to make you judge that you can handle everything.
We can also suggest you D390 or bigger bikes, but whats the use of it ?Fare thee well xBhp, All the best for being the biggest name in corporate world

Totally agree with you. I think 25bhp is too huge for a first time bike.Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostIs 12kms enough to give you an experience how "all" the bikes handle and perform?

And long run is needed to judge how well you can handle it.
I suggest he go with Gixxer or fz. But duke is also good if he can handle the power.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
I thought starting with marginally higher power can help me become more conscious about the ride and the roads. Moreover, I didnt get to have the cbr250r beyond that as the owner had to take it back home. I felt comfortable in it doing 65-70 kmph without nervousness in the open stretches in the city. can you tell me how is the power to weight ratio will affect riders? I have no idea and as I said I'm totally a beginner trying different bikes. Please give me more ideas. Cost will not be a problem as with duke.Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostIs 12kms enough to give you an experience how "all" the bikes handle and perform?

As I have mentioned, I need to know what all to consider while buying my first bike. It goes like this, my friends who own duke are all possessive about it and they dont let even the other duke owners to ride it. With this I think I would have to convince them for a long ride on it. I do not play with the accelerator and hence I thought 25bhp would be okay for a beginner like me.Originally posted by Vysakh.M.S View PostTotally agree with you. Re: KTM 200 Duke
Guys people start with a 33PS powered Ninja 300 in European countries as learners bike. It's not that everyone should or has to get into riding with a 150CC bike. Now it depends upon every person and the road conditions as well but I think if money is not an issue then the D200 is definitely the best learners bike out there.Originally posted by Vysakh.M.S View PostTotally agree with you. I mean it's light, has ample amounts of power, so the rider can learn how to handle the bike in corners. Use of disc brakes in both front and rear will teach the rider how to use powerful brakes at both ends.

Also I would like to know if duke 390 would be okay? It has abs as mentioned in our car. abs is safer right? so it must be a better option?Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostIs 12kms enough to give you an experience how "all" the bikes handle and perform?

This is what my friends are also emphasizing. But they warn about the amount of time and trouble the bike cause due to high maintenance. all of them started out with duke 200 or royal enfield 350. I need a hassle free first bike experience and it shouldnt be regretful
more ideas are welcome.
thanks

Why dont you post a query in "What Bike" section alongwith your requirements? And then we can have the discussion at the right thread , rather than going OT in this thread. And would insist you to go through this link before you start the thread The Motorcycle Bikers Dictionary - Motorcycle terms, Biker TerminologyFare thee well xBhp, All the best for being the biggest name in corporate world

Re: KTM 200 Duke
I wanted to know the practical problems and good things that the owners of the duke 200 face. Thats why i posted it here. But it became a different topic once u asked about other details. As far as I am concerned, I only need to know if it ll be a regretful experience to get the duke 200 as my first bike and more information about the pros and cons and less of technical terms. It would be much helpful if you could link the authentic what bike thread. I found multiple first bike and what bike threads here.Originally posted by prateek2210 View PostWhy dont you post a query in "What Bike" section alongwith your requirements? Well that was just my opinion. Here many of them rash drive and get into trouble even if smaller cc bikes.
If he can handle it, duke200 is a good bike as a first time bike.

Yes abs is safety. Duke 390 is 44bhp whereas duke200 is 25bhp.
Comparing both.dukes, 200 will be mpre suitable for you.
And you can get more help in what bike section as pratheek said

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Can you please link the authentic what bike thread? I have found multiple threads and they are all for different vehicles. Also as I had mentioned, it is very difficult to get a ride on the duke 200 from my possessive friends. and to my dismay, when i approached ktm showroom for test drive, they said they ll give me the bike to ride only if i book it.Originally posted by Vysakh.M.S View PostMaintenance of duke390 will be way more higher than duke200.

It was bad. since m considering gixxer also, i thought i could decide about the test drive of duke after learning its practical problems as my first bike. so that i can rule out duke if its really clumsy. but now i think i ll have to talk to owners who have been owning duke 200 for longer periods than the people i know.
thanks.
