The battery must be upgraded to higher amperes
Oh okay, the reason why i mentioned about the crank case is because i remember joel mentioning it in one of the threads that the crank case has been altered slightly to accommodate the 5th gear and AFAIK nano is already running a 9amp set up.

    • 2000 Classic Fiero

      Hi all!
I have been passive reader of this thread for last three month and was so much enlightened that decided to restore my classic Fiero for second time, first time it was re bored and new head was placed on it, odo was 65k that time, in 2006.
now a brief history, I bought this bike in year 2000 and soon I started a nature camp near River Ganga in Rishikesh, it was such an workhorse that it did its duty for complete 7 and 8 yrs in row, it did duty of a jeep as way to the camp is off road and its steep gradient (2km) it did all sorts of work like ferrying load to the camp to getting three people(staff) up on the road. It was used mainly by staff till 2009. after little accident and after I bought Bolero camper because road to the camp also widened, my darling classic Fiero was not used till now. the other reason for keeping Fiero unused that the parts of it were unavailable in Dehradun too, somehow I managed parts from Saharanpur, Delhi and where not
      parts were
side panels, fairings, shock absorber, gear lever which goes inside the gearbox and many more things like cables switches, clutch plate
somehow I got hold of one mechanic who rebored engine and put all these things in place.. now the problem is
1)I need a new carb as old one does not work properly , its all inside jets, rubber parts etc were changed
      2) two days back I was riding it to camp(I decided to keep Fiero for my single use) and suddenly it went dead now the guy says that its CDI has gone kaput as he has checked plug no current, check on/off red switch. checked fuse etc
I am waiting for him to arrange CDI from some other Fiero to check it
please help me with the problem and further I need to source 1) Carb 2) whole odometer assembly etc
Thanks in advance to all you great guys!

Firstly you live in a beautiful place right on mother goddess's lap I have been there and have some very fond memories of the place as my aunt's in Gorakhpur. With all the ashrams and spirituality of the place combined with nature. Its a amazing place.

Coming to your bike's problems,go for Apache/RTR 160/180'S TCI set up instead of the fiero's CDI which is not only costly as well as hard to find,TCI is a better option in comparison to it.

Go for the Pulsar's carb and your bike should be as good as new.

as gixxer mentioned go for the tci mod,for the carb i'd suggest go for the bs 29 ucal(pulsar 200 carb) if you are unable to source the fiero carb.sourcing the odometer will be a bit of a task. You could go for a apache 150 speedo.

          • okay, but tell me, will i be able to fit that huge sprocket behind the magnet, as well as the step down gear ??

and what about the hole from where the self starter shaft will enter ??

            can it be done ??

my bike has higher compression, kicking a stock 180 is a piece of cake compared to my kick...
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

yes gixxer, its beautiful and peaceful place, it has its merits but disadvantage too...for every other little things we have to run around to far off place...
thanks for the inputs..can you elaborate a little, please. as I have read in previous discussion that TCI set up includes ignition coil and other things too
              Thanks veloci too!!

              • @gixxer_junkie_m: Will insulating the CDI with some tape etc.solve my wet stalling problem? One Fiero specialist mechanic says it is normal&he has done it for many people. He says the magnet coil cannot have a problem-in case of Fiero F2, it produces less spark by design.

You would have to change the Ignition coil too.So the parts needed would be :

                  1. TCI unit, cost= 700 Rs.

                  2. Ignition Coil = 400 Rs.

You can buy the TCI unit of either Apache 150 or RTR 160 or that of the RTR 180.They all have TCI and the Ignition coil of any of the above will do.

The TCI units are color coded to differentiate between the 3 bikes as they have different ignition mappings. That is:

                  Apache 150 =Black.

                  RTR 160 = Grey.

                  RTR 180 = Green.

You can buy any of the above and they all cost the same.My suggestion is ,you'd better go for RTR 180's TCI unit which is green in color.

My bike's running on the RTR 180's TCI unit and also with RTR 180's Ignition coil.

The installation is a easy job, which any mech should be able to do and there's no need to change any other electrical part or wiring.

TCI is the tech used in superbikes and the latest CBR250RR also has it.Oh another thing ,it doesn't have a rev limiter.

You can let him try it out, there's no harm in it buddy and yes he's right about the spark size. That's the kinda spark you get from the CDI and it's Ignition coil.

Like Gixxer said go for the TCI/IDI conversion .The RTR180 parts best suit your bike since Fiero/Apache/RTR180 are almost the same stroke length and their TCI will be best.....of the lot the RTR180 conversion is the cheapest, and parts will be available for some more time..and the spark energy you get is far greater . Gixxer had done it..and so he is the authority on this conversion.

I know very little about electrical matters as you very well know ,just the basics of the tech.Regarding conversions ,yes i have tried out things and know a few things for a fact.Like in the case of finding out that TCI doesn't need a battery to run just like the CDI

It costs the same at the ucal dealer too as quoted at the bajaj dealer.Fiero carb is a slightly different one.

Cheers Gixxer!!! i hope you know what an irritating feeling it is when the carb is screwed. u raise the throttle and it suffocates. moreover the mech has tightened the valve heads to an extent that the camshaft is worn out and makes a whining noise when raised i'll definitely be going for the P150 carb. its a direct fit is it?

Yeah man i've been facing the same problem since some time now and god knows when the bigger carb will be available for her.
The whining noise you are hearing is likely from the cam chain follower and that's the result of a over-tightened cam chain tensioner setting.

Or even more importantly it could be from a leaking intake manifold ,has the mech checked it??
