  • Re: KTM RC 390 Ownership Experience

Guys I have decided to go for the RC 390, will be making payment tomorrow and taking delivery on Sunday. I had a few questions though, because I'm not too sure of my dealer, because yesterday he was extremely friendly, and today when he knew I was a sure buyer his attitude was changed already, he was a lot less friendly, and Im not sure what it would be after payment. So here are a few points I'd like to check:

    1. How do I know whether the bike I have received is a new piece? Can the odometer reading be sufficient enough for that? What would the normal reading be? And could the dealer reset the odometer somehow and pass off an old bike to me? I need a definite method to check this. This is my key area of concern, and I would really need some suggestions on this.
PS I am aware of VIN number, and will use that to check month of manufacture.

    2. What papers should I be given on purchase of the bike? Could I please have a list of this?

    3. When asking about the full price of the bike, I was told that an additional of Rs 650 is to be paid to receive the RC book (which is a smart card from govt. of India). Is this correct or is he charging me extra?

    4. Which insurance should I take? The dealer is encouraging me to get bumper to bumper insurance, but Ive heard nothing other than zero dep would do, could anyone explain a little on this please? Also if zero dep is so important, why would he encourage and try to make me go for bumper to bumper?

    5. Regarding PDI, I have the checklist with me, I'll manage that part

Would really appreciate some urgent help on this guys! Thanks

First of all congrats for the bike

well a dealer could first of all remove the speedo meter cable cause of which the odo won't show an increase in its kms.
there isn't much we can do about that and yes he can even reset it but it requires work

but keep an eye out cause he might change the meter to trip one while u are checking the bike cause that can be easily reseted (happened with a friend of mine he didn't notice it was on trip 1 and took the bike and later found out that he was already driven 60+ kms)

the only way is to deeply check the tires

or check whether all the plastic covers are there on the bike( this includes one on the engine[ the main cause they can't leave it while it's test ridden cause the plastic might melt on it] visor and the one near the drl, then it's the usual check for marks and wear and tear and also scratches on the place where key is inserted( that too points out it may be ridden before)

a normal new bike should have an odo of 25 MAX

just choose between 2-3 stocks cause there is usually only one test bike so you could easily identify the one not ridden

and at the documentation part it would be a copy of the bill(Receipt), customer copy of delivery order, insurance ,manual and a keycard

Never heard about point 3 and 4
      try googling it

Not any kind of co operation from KTM dealer in Kolkata. I want to avail no claim bonus and am still okay if they give the discount on the on road price as well. I have the previous insurance paper with me,which is still active. What action can I take? Need help urgently.

Guys, for any of you purchasing a bike from KTM soon, do check the prices with different showrooms. The first showroom, with which I had planned to purchase from was overcharging me for almost Rs. 6000. I found out this by checking the price with another showroom. The difference was coming where the manager was charging me additional money on insurance,Rs. 3000, claiming zero dep has an excess of that much, but in reality the amount of 5000 was already inclusive of this. He also hiked up registration charges, and charged an additional Rs. 650 for a smart card, which was again already being doubly charged.
The dealer to whom I made the payment now didn't include any of these excessive charges as far as I'm aware, but he is claiming that servicing costs around 3000-3500 per visit, which I know for a fact is wrong, on this forum itself I've seen so many bill pictures where it is around Rs. 1800.
Just a little bit of warning for those who are purchasing soon, as all these dealers seem to somehow keep trying to extract more money from us, hope this helps someone

Hey I just had a question, regarding the plastic cover over the engine, that would mean the bike hasn't been ridden right? And thats the one I should be looking out for, right? And that should be there when i purchase the bike? So in which case if that plastic cover isn't there, I can make an issue about it?

Another point, could you tell me where exactly the VIN number is? And how to decode it?

          Thanks

Plastic cover on the engine casing can mean a lot, they might be ridden and then installed back, or they might have not ridden. It doesn't make a big difference, Angad. Relax, you're just over thinking things. Speedo should be your best bet in terms of the kays clocked. As I've said, that cover is there for transportation purposes since bikes are stacked closely and to prevent accidental scratching of the casing.

You mentioned you were aware of VIN decoding yesterday, anyway here it is.

Check the 8th and 10th digits of the VIN, 8th being Month and 10th being year.

I've posted this earlier too in this thread, but here it is again.

            The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Well not only the one on the engine but also on the visor and near the drl

they could put it back tough but mostly they lose it and don't bother

The best way to get a new untouched virgin piece is to ask the manager that you want to chose between different pieces that way you could easily identify the one less touched

and regarding the VIN number, it's found below the seat just open the seat and there will be a black rectangle which will have numbers and alphabets embedded on them I have attached a pic for your convenience and to identify the month and year of manufacture it's the 8th and 10th alphabet respectively

heres the the alphabet along with the date and month:
              8th 10th
              A. April
              B. May
              C. June
              D. July
              E. August. 2014
              F. September 2015
              G. October. 2016
              H. November
              J. December
              K. January
              L. February
              M. March

too lazy to type the other years sorry cause it's had on the phone

well u should be concentration on the 8th alphabet being G or luckily H and the 10th one not being anything less than F

Once again congrats for your new ride and do post your review and experience of pre and post purchase along with first impression and if any problem occurs we xbhpians are always there to help you

Thanks a lot for the pic, really helps
I already talked about month of manufacture, in both showrooms they said that September is the latest model they have, so thats the one I'll be going for, should show F
I know he might have some October ones too, but I don't think that would make a difference anyways, so yeah that should be okay
Delivery is on Sunday, I'll update after that

F in the 10th digit shows the year of manufacture which would be 2015
your main concern should be the 8th digit
F in that would be September manufacturing G would be October and H would be November
8th shows month and 10 shows year

Did they shave the head ? generally it is done to increase compression ratio...
How much did it cost you?

The kind of performance you mentioned is exactly what I am looking for from my bike.

                      Tried petrol at Reliance pump.
Tank to tank method it lasted only for 170 kms before reserve.
With HP or BP it gives 185-190 kms.
