• Re: Suzuki GS150R

Completed the first service for my GS. The gear shift has become smooth now.
But I had one more complaint even before first service.
I heard some knocking sound from the engine around say 3000RPM and above. I don't hear it when the bike is idle. The service supervisor rode my bike multiple times and said that the bike is smooth and he doesn't hear any noise. I thought that I am being paranoid by the normal engine sound itself (since it was in runnin period) and thought that the knocking sound might reduce after first service. Now, even after the first service, I am hearing the knocking sound. Still the mechanic and the service supervisor says that they do not hear any such noise and the bike is smooth.
On researching the xbhp and other forums, I came to know that such knocking problems in GS are possible due to improper valve clearance or tappet noise. Is this true? Can someone tell what is a tappet? Does that have something to do with the valve clearance?
Also, as per the manual, the valve clearance is supposed to be checked at every service (not sure if the service mechanic check it during the first service). If that was done during the first service, how is that I still hear the knocking sound?

Is it something that I should attend to immediately? Or can I ask the mechanic to check the valve clearance during the second service (still 3000kms to go)?

Went for a long drive on the two days back in My GS and my friends Thundirbird 350 .

Trip route : Bangalore -> Nagerhole National Park (226 kms) -> Mysore (85 kms ) -> Bangalore (150 kms)

Left our room @ 5.35 in the morning. After multiple stops for tea , breakfast and exchanging drives (more than 1 hr) , we reached nagerhole by 10.30 keeping the speeds between 70 - 95 most of the time. On a slight slope, i attained a speed of 120 kmph.

but our bad, two wheelers/three wheelers are not allowed to go into the forest (we decided this as our destination only @ 11.30 on friday. So didnt do much googling , Also the team bhp travelogues havent mentioned anything in their forums). The guard told us to keep our bikes there and to catch the next bus to go inside. But we couldnt take such a risk. So we kept there thinking of where to go next. Coorg was the next option. Went atleast 20 kms towards Coorg, but then stopped and decided not to go as it was already afternoon and that we had limited time.we decided to come back to Mysore.

Reached my friends room @ Mysore by 1-o-clock (after having breakfast) driving at the speed range of 80's. Took a quick sleep and then went for visiting the places there ( mysore palace, St. Philomena's Church, chamundi hills.etc etc etc)

Started from mysore by 2-o-clock in the afternoon on sunday and reached blore by 6. ( multiple stops for exchanging drives , lunch and heavy traffic block near channa pattana and ramanagara and speed between just 60 - 75 kmph)

total 4 ppl , 2 bikes
In my GS ,
total kms done -546 kms (in this, 320-340 kms are in one stretch with few breaks)
mileage - approx 50
total petrol - 700 + 200 =900 rs ( 11.5 ltr)

the best thing is , GS is long way ahead when comparing with the Thundirbird. We will get back pain very easily after driving TB, but in GS no such probs, Well, the butt hurts . But considering the rear seating position, TB is better with that back support.

in GS, no vibrations even at higher speed and hence awesome comfort. quiet easy to take it through traffic. TB Starts to vibrate after 80 kmph and when it reaches 90 - 100 , it vibrates like an old petrol generator. Its difficult to take it through the traffic as its such heavy ! !

We exchanged our drives frequently and i must say, when riding the GS after TB, its like we got heaven.. such easy its to handle our Bike..

Not adding much pics as its not a road trip thread. Just wanted all of you to know how easy and how capable our bike is for long trips.. ! !

Now, much interested to know -
What mileage you were getting on your Hunk in similar riding conditions?

48-50 in Chennai city for Hunk! Good.
I haven't been able to extract more than 44kmpl.

I did a good research on this topic and today i am really glad to complete the air filter mod for gs 150 with that of suzuki fiero. The basic change is from a paper filter to foam filter (oiled). It is a direct fit. Thanks to suzuki. Tried a test drive and there is a good push in the acceleration. Can give a complete review only after a long drive. Attached pictures would tell the story. Total expense. Fiero air filter assembly - rs 600. Time for the mod - 15 mins

Thanks pal. Yes I miss my RX whenever I see one on the road . But, still I had no choice but to sell my RX and get myself a new GS. Anyways, GS is one bike which I don't regret buying. Had I bought anything else other than GS, I don't know how long I would be able to live with that.

Hi,
My bike has crossed 425 kms now. I checked mileage reserve to reserve basis. I know it is not much accurate , but with this method, the mileage i got for my GSR is 50.2 KMPL. 65% highway 35 % city . Max speed till now 70KMPH. I think it may improve after first servie.

Suzuki_777, Hope these 70 kmph are for short blasts only - manual recommends to keep below 4.5K for first 800 kms (500 miles). R-to-R calculations are approx and conservative - you will actually be getting more kmpl.

Yes it was only for few seconds but several times till now. Mostly i drive in between 4.0 K - 4.5 K rpm. And as mentioned in manual i do vary the speed time to time.

Aprat from this yesterday i went to showroom asking for the transfer certificate of my old bike & RC book of new bike. I saw a New GS150R with latest 2013 graphics in service center. Front end portion was completely dis assembled, i saw speedometer & it was showing 26 kms till now. But VIN no. was from 2012 . Is it possible in GS to make speedo meter revers or again to zero kms ( not trip meters ) ? i thnk they were changing fuel tank & panels to new stickers of 2013.

I know what you're suggesting, but I'm not with you. Could it be possible that that bike met with an accident or owner is going for a make over?
Did you happen to note the RegNo?

Generally mineral/SVC engine oil is recommended during mating(new engine); not sure how mineral scores better over semi-synth/full-synth for mating of engine parts. Perhaps mineral helps in friction.

None of the dealers I came across accepted Engine-Oil(s) I took along for changing. So, now if I choose Shell oil I might change it at their pump for free else do it myself at my leisure. Thanks to Vishnu(and others) for pumping confidence to undertake DIY tasks in this thread.

Today I changed Engine & Gear oil on our Honda-Dio: (cleaned AirFilter too along with other stuff)
