Re: Honda CB Hornet 160R Owners Experiences
Hi Everyone,
I have owned the CB Hornet 160R (Pearl Nightstar Black - dual disk variant) for almost a year now. Pending 3rd service next month. Here are my experiences:
Coming from a Honda Dio, it's wonderful experience to ride the Hornet. I haven't been riding much in the earlier stages as I'm new to bike riding. Have been on a moped for the years before Hornet. I've done 3.7k on the ODO. It's only recently that I've started to use the bike for 20+ km per day for office commute. The experience has been mostly good. I've been on a couple of long rides (100-120 km range) and I was able to touch 109 kmph on the Speedo with a pillion passenger which was quite exciting. I also love the breaks, very responsive.
Here are a few issues I've faced, they are mostly what others have been facing here on the forums:
1. The drive chain needs frequent adjustments. Sometimes the jerkiness starts soon after 500km after an adjustment.
2. Stop and go traffic requires frequing gear shifting between 1st and 2nd.
3. Gear shifting feels hard. Especially when shifting down. The gear gets stuck sometimes and I have to engage and then disengage again to be able to shift down. This especially happens on a hot engine after a few kilometers of riding.
4. Bad headlight throw.
I'm hoping to understand about maintaining the bike as well as possible so as to ensure good working of the bike for a long duration. I have a few questions I'm trying to understand about the bike.
1. Can anything done to avoid frequent drive chain adjustments?
2. I've read a lot about Fully Synthetic engine oil here on the forums. I've heard mixed opinions on when to switch to FS oil. Some have used it after 1st service, some after 5k on the ODO. I've done 3.7k on the ODO and I travel around 20-25 km per day. With my riding conditions, is it wise to go for FS oil?
3. Regarding gear shifting issues (getting stuck when down shifting), could the engine oil be an issue?
4. What are your opinions on premium petrol (like Shell V-Power)? Is it worth the extra price? Does it really make a difference in ride quality or longitivity of the engine?
5. Would changing the headlights void warranty? Also do suggest a good replacement to the stock headlight without adjustments to the system in the bike and without strain to the battery.

Headlight replacement: I got from local shop. Philips HS for 140. Claimed to be 30% more light.
PremiumVision Moto Motorcycle headlights 12636C1 | Philips
Definitely better than stock one. Changing to same grade headlight won't void warrantee. If they will void warantee on this trivial same grade headlight, they can do it over sticking stickers too
FS oil and Gear shifting: Change to FS and everything will get super smooth, from gear shifting to engine getting hot.
Premium petrol: Haven't used it.------------------

Re: Honda CB Hornet 160R Owners Experiences
In my opinion, avoid the premium petrol as it contains high octane content which in turn would heat up your engine fast. Better, avoid it.Originally posted by gaurav71189 View PostHi Everyone,

Re: Honda CB Hornet 160R Owners Experiences
Most of the Hornet users are using FS oils and are having positive reviews.Originally posted by mac4rfree View Postexactly I am asking? Should I go for motul 5100 10w30 or 10w40 after completing 12000 km?
I think you can switch to FS oil now, honda has their own FS oil, which is used in Cbr250, its called throttle something.
You can opt for that.
If sticking to SS 5100 oil Then 10w40.Last edited by IamAditya; 03-27-2017, 01:21 PM.

1. No - but how do you decide that it needs an adjustment? What are the symptoms? Could it be so that the underlying issue is completely different?Originally posted by gaurav71189 View PostHi Everyone,

2. Yes! You won't regret it.
3. Yes.. just don't tell Honda ASC to do it and turn your back on the bike in the process. DIY for best results.
4. Quantifying this is would be IMPOSSIBLE! Benefits would be theoretical at best. But there are some bad petrol pumps which you should avoid - some forums have sticky threads to enlist such.
5. Headlamps aren't covered in warranty. Also, when upgrading, you could keep the original stock locked away. Then you can put them back on whenever you need a warranty claim. Circumventing warranty limitations might not be ethical, but then again, their definition of warranty isn't ethical either
20w50 is available in Motul 7100, suits better in Indian conditions.Originally posted by mac4rfree View Postexactly I am asking? Should I go for motul 5100 10w30 or 10w40 after completing 12000 km?Last edited by iamkrazee; 03-27-2017, 07:30 PM.
