It's just that I don't understand sometimes that we are OK to get a 1.6+ lakh rupees bike home but not ready to invest in proper riding gear or regular maintenance equipments. That's something that gets on my nerves.
Off topic - Patanjali Honey is good though. [emoji23]

I agree, but thats due to the fact that those things cost, and in non devloped cities, people arent earning enough to spend that much , when i was in my home town i barely used a 1000 bucks helmet , but living in ncr changed the game altogether, so its just that people are coming to it as a mode of transportation and not a family member to fullfill all its need , its a bike and it should just ask for petrol is what people go by. Time changes them, thats the moment we wait for. [emoji16]

Guys, its personal choice. Any thing that suits him is good for him no matter what others say. I am just sharing my preference. Buying a 1.7+ lakh bike does not necessarily mean that you buy all the high end stuffs, its just that we buy according to the size of our pocket and choice thats available around us. As for Patanjali products, some say it is over rated. Just my view, please. No offense. 😃😃😃😉😉😉

Lubing a chain isn't rocket science, and doesn't require anything more than engine oil and your old jockeys. I use any fresh engine oil or gear oil for my o ring chain and it's lasted me 42,000 kms on a CBR 250. I'm currently using 2T oil manufactured in 1992, and the damn chain still isn't giving up. I'm expecting at least 45,000 kms out of it.

A simple math would tell you that using a ₹500 chain cleaner and lube for my chain would result in expenditure of ₹2500-3000 in chain maintenance, which is more than the cost of the chain itself.

Using edible oils on your chain isn't recommended because it might attract critters and ants on your bike.

Afaik, CBR has a steel chain. So your math could be wrong here.

How is that? I've calculated the cost of the chain+ sprocket which is ₹2k, and the cost of maintenance by branded chain cleaners over 40,000 kms.

Then this proves that Motul and other manufacturers are ripping the customers and false products are being launched by them. Under current Govt rule, there has to be some way to make a court case against them. This is an open post with proof that chain cleaners are just loot.

To all my fellow xbhpians,

never use engine oil for chain lubrication period. less viscous, viscous, new, used. please avoid them at all cost for chain lubrication.

1. engine oils tend to sling off chain ( extremely viscous for chain lube application) because they are made to form a film on the internal parts of engine and pumped through a filter and back into engine parts. it is engineered very carefully just to perform that task. ( it will also splash around the wheel and front sprocket case making it more dirty)
2. they attract dirt, another property that engineers had mind was to make the engine oil able carry all the contaminants and dirt present to the filter, bike chains do not have filter so all the dirt and gritty stuff will form a layer of gunk around your chain and sprockets.
3. it is also hard to wash out once applied, it will resist all the mild chain cleaners and not come off easily unless you add a solvent or something.

i personally recommned if you find motul lube expensive go for the 3M chain lube it is bit cheaper and specially desgined for chain lubing application, protecting the chain best.
for cleaning please use wd-40 if you think chain cleaners are expensive. WD-40 is much researched upon for chian cleaning application and it works just good it does not damage the rings or anything its just a myth.

WD40+proper chain lube = dust free chain, smooth ride and added life of chain and sprockets.

if spend 1.7 lacs for the bike, a large can of 3M lube of rs.450 shouldn't hurt and WD 40 is around 250rs as far as i know.
you dont require much lube though spray it sparingly and wipe off the excess or else it will splutter around when chain is in drive.
so a big can will last till long.

Commercial chain cleaners and lube is nothing more than what bisleri and Aquafina are compared to locally packaged water cans. Like Lays chips vs local packet chips.

You can use either or neither. Nobody is forcing the customers to use any particular chain lube, they just recommend it.

aashray223 - you're right about engine oils flinging off and attracting dirt. Judicious application is required. Though, some commercial lubes do collect grime. However, the "specially made for chains" part is just plain old marketing tricks. If a chain lasts the same if you lube it with engine oil, 2T oil, or 3M, whats the speciality?

As to the gunk collecting around the front sprocket, yes it does. But it's only a cosmetic effect on the underbody, and has no bearing on the life of the chain or sprocket in my experience. If you're a guy who wants every part of his motorbike gleaming like Shilpa Shetty's face, then dry lubes like Wurth and Du-Pont are best.

Is it k to give bike to normal water wash. Because they water jet all over the body. Does it damage electrical parts or what?

Agreed, the chain maintenance costs are higher than cost of chain. Also if chain is cleaned regularly with kerosene, engine oil should be fine.
My Dominar chain goes dry every week.
This rainy season, i cleaned chain almost every week only to find a grimy dirty chain from the wet roads.
Better to clean weekly than monthly with Motul.
I am using 3M cleaner and Motul lube and the bike rides great for the entire week.

Got 10000 on the odo. The front and rear brake feel spongy. After doing yet another pothole which appeared from underneath a car, i am sure the breaking power is not what it used to be. Any comments?

Calm down. I have ridden thru pouring rains and got the bike washed with high pressure water. All is well.
