  • Re: Yamaha FZ 25 Owners Reviews and Experiences

hello i got the first service done today. got it done in a town called Nagaon, as the service centre there was much better than the one in Tezpur (which is nearer to me). odometer read 964 kms at the time of the servicing. few things to mention.
    1. so as i started off on my 50 km ride to Nagaon, i heard the infamous 'Tappet' noise, the metallic tick tick noise which i think is mentioned earlier in this thread, for the first time. i thought this was it. i am doomed! so i asked the mechanic there if he can fix the issue, only then i would get the bike serviced in Nagaon. otherwise i was prepared to ride another 100 kms and get it done in Guwahati.
    2. the mechanic fixed the irritating tick tick noise. he asked me if someone fiddled with the drive chain. i said the mechanic in the Tezpur Yamaha service centre guy did. i told him the background story of how i cleaned the chain with kerosene and then lubed it. just like the tezpur mechanic, he too told me not to use kerosene. so he told me he tightened the chain again and that fixed the tick tick noise. basically he linked the noise with kerosene-loose chain. i trust his verdict as the sound is gone and i am no more frustrated.
3.the 'free' service costed rupees 1430, inclusive of pea carbon, which i was told is something that is added in the fuel tank. i just agreed. it costed 160 rupees. engine oil change and oil filter change. i have around 200-300ml of the leftover engine oil with me which i will use in the next servicing.
    4. man..the vibes are gone. its smooth..really smooth now. i took on the open highway for around 20 kms and ran her wildly. felt great. however the wind blast means that i dont feel comfortable holding high speeds for long. took her up to 105 km/hr. i wont be able to cruise at such speeds even if the highways are devoid of cows. or maybe i will get used to the wind hitting me so hard someday. basically no complaints with the motorcycle.
    5. but oh..as the chain is tighter, gear shifting has become harder. i went back to the service centre and ask the mechanic if he could lube it some more. he said this is the way the bike is going to be. it will be hard nothing he can do about it. he also said lube it after a few days if you want to, but let it be for now. finding neutral is as hard as finding a good job with an arts degree (myself a pg arts student).
    6. i put orange rim stickers on her. will upload the pictures tomorrow. and you guys made me feel really guilty for having removed the tyre hugger for the sake of aesthetics. so i put it back on long back
had a good experience today. i was nervous initially but it turned out to be a good day

Chain should not be kept tight. It is not the way it should be. Your mechanic simply didn't wanted to loose it. Tight chain reduces power also puts loads on the counter bearing which will damage it. Tight chain also cause damage to it, will wear out fast. Eventually then customer has to get new chain which adds to the profit to the svc who did it. You cannot claim warranty on chain set.

Lube the chain and see if it loose otherwise loose it yourself or get it loose at local mechanic. Its every easy and also given at manual.

There is no issue using kerosene to wash chain. I downloaded service manual of yamaha r1 and company itself recommend to use kerosene.

Other then karosean , tarpin oil, diesel can also be used to clean the chain. And wd40 is the most convenient and easy to use just spray properly and wait for 2 mins let it drip and wipe with lint free cloth. Finsh with any chain lube.

see if yamaha R1 manual says use kerosene in the drive chain, then obviously use kerosene for drive chain in yamaha R1. now why would Yamaha change the instruction for another product of its own? i know both are o ring chains. but o ring i a type of chain right? o ring chain of R1 and FZ25 wont be the exact same chain. so Yamaha must have adviced using soapy water and not kerosene for a reason.
if one says yamaha did not mention kerosene in FZ25 manual as it is flammable, and it mentioned soapy water for the sake of safety, this argument too i think isnt logical. would yamaha assume that R1 users would use kerosene safely and FZ25 users are more at risk? doesnt make sense for yamaha to think that FZ users are more careless or dangerous than R1 users
we customers are users of a product designed by speacialists. we did not design the drive chain. we only use it. so why not listen to the instructions in the manual. if kerosene was recommended for FZ25 chain yamaha would have mentioned 'soapy water or kerosene'. but it doesnt.
now one may insist on still using kerosene just because R1 manual recommends it. think of it this way. would a R1 owner download a FZ25 owners manual and follow instructions written there. no right? he knows kerosene is mentioned in his manual so he will use kerosene. same applies for us. like i mentioned earlier both motorcycles do not have the exact same chain despite both being o ring maybe. otherwise FZ25 manual would have said "refer to R1 manual kindly" in the drive chain maintenance section.
paul.1911 the chain was loose and hence the tick tick sound. he tightened it to the required level. he did not make it too tight. if he could tighten it he would have loosened it as well if required. he was not lazy and its wrong to assume that he simply didnt want to loosen it. like i said a loose chain was the problem causing the tick tick sound.
moreover two mechanics in two different authorised service centres have told me using kerosene on FZ25 drive chain is bad...mind you they did not tell me kerosene is bad for R1 or any other bike. so if the trained mechanics are not recommending it, we users should not get smart and go on the contrary. i am saying this cause i used kerosene and faced problems on my FZ25. maybe if i had R1 i wouldnt have faced problems. so i am telling you guys to be on the safe side. if you use kerosene it may cause problems like it did to me. if it doesnt then that is awesome. but people who have no preference of kerosene over soap keep this in mind while cleaning your chain.

          regarding filling the fuel tank.
yesterday the bike hit reserve. i tried the auto cut off method. she took in only 7 litres! so lets say at the max i had 4 litres in reserve. i added another 7 litres. so auto cut off happened when the tank had around 11 litres. ridiculous! i filled another 3 litres though and the tank drank it up.
on the first tank i got a mileage of 50 km/hr. on the second tank i got a mileage of 42km/hr. it reduced as for the first tank duration i limited the rpm to 4500. and for the second tank i extended it to 6000 rpm.

Use whatever you want, but let me tell you in R3 manual also it's mentioned to use soap (something like that) water to clean chain, but i am using kerosene since I purchased my bike, currently odo is at 19.5k kms and replacement is scheduled at 25k kms.

Also, I am using dry lube which lasts for 1000 kms easily.

Also do RE Thunderbird do better then fz25 in those situation? I m shying from RE Thunderbird due to its cruiser handlebar , handling on tight corners in mountain might be dangerous?
              .
And peoples say that RE CLASSIC is quite uncomfortable sitting position for long rides

Though Re Himalaya seems to do all I want buy it's too costly for me. Inspire if u say that there is no option else Himalaya then I may buy it.
Is current Himalaya model has too much niggles ,?
for going to leh, jispa you wouldnt be doing much higher speeds. presence of abs wont hurt but is not critical.

abs is must only for those who dream of cruising at 120-130 kmph on our highways and suddenly a cow comes in between. as if abs will magically save you. remember your breaks are the same. they dont get converted to brembo monoblocs or something just cause abs is included.

tires yes you should get them. they will help you with better grip and more confidence. we have ppl of different tolerances. some ppl have done leh on metzelers on duke 390. modify bike as per your tolerance. i would personally do such trips only on adventure bike. but thats me.

thunderbird handles well and those handlebars pose no hinderance and problems. its a relaxed bike and again you wont do much high speeds on it. if you want speed get fz. if you want vibrations massage you on the way, get thunderbird. not saying it in a bad way. at low speeds vibes are low frequency and massage you. so the slower you go the better you feel.

re classic should be similar to fz on comfort front. fundamental of comfort is you will be tired on any bike you use. for long distance, its best to have multiple points on body that bear your weight. on thunderbird it will be your butt only. on classic it will be your butt, legs, palms. chances are on either bike you would feel similar at end of ride.

fz should be slightly less comfy than either cause it gives you feedback of whats happening between road and tires. its sporty in nature.

agreed. post delete mostly take away energy from discussion. most xbhpians are passionate people who put heart and some effort in sharing posts. mods just delete them if they feel its comparing two bikes or so.

i am yet to come across forum, Indian or international where discussion is as pointed on one bike as is expected here.

There is a test conducted by MCN. They used Kerosene, diesel and WD40, and o-ring was perfectly safe. It is safe to use but if someone has doubt, for peace of mind can follow whatever said in manual. And i think ASC wont use any special cleaning agents though they might say so.

                  Thanks.

Chain cleaning and lubrication has been thoroughly discussed in forums all over the world!

Diesel, Kerosene, WD40 can be used. Since Diesel is easily available than Kerosene (at-least in Hyderabad) and much cheaper than Branded Chain cleaners. Personally I prefer diesel than kerosene.

paul.1911[COLOR=#000000][FONT=verdana] the chain was loose and hence the tick tick sound. he tightened it to the required level. he did not make it too tight. if he could tighten it he would have loosened it as well if required. he was not lazy and its wrong to assume that he simply didnt want to loosen it. like i said a loose chain was the problem causing the tick tick sound.
Diesel kero are just cleaning agents and has nothing to do with chain. I will use kero to clean. The tick tick problem you faced is not because of use of kerosene. Its normal for a chain to loose after de-greasing. I have already mentioned the reason of this few pages back.

If your mechanic would have tighten the chain to the required level which is, for your knowledge, 40-45 mm slack as per manual. Then you wouldn't have faced problem with gear shifting and you wouldn't have gone back to mechanic. Its common in every bike if you over-tighten the chain you will face problem with shifting gears, this is because of the pressure it puts on the counter shaft where all gears play. Any trained mechanic will not over-tight the chain. Mechanic refuse to fix, most probably because they will be questioned by their supervisor as to what happened? why you didn't did correctly in the first place?..!! Now when your chain will get loose after wearing out your gear shifting problem will go.

Those rim stickers look good mate! My personal opinion is stay away from white/silver ones as they don't go well with the overall black theme of the bike. A red would also be good in my opinion.

Also I see an orange coloured thing between handle bars and speedo console. What's that? A cloth or something else?

Please let me know from where did you get the tank pad.

So my friend has a situation and he has to sell his FZ 250 even before completing the run in period. So on 5th July it will be 2 months old. I am considering buying the bike.

What special care should I take to ensure the bike is perfect?
What should I test to check if the friend properly did the run in?

What percentage of the on road price is good for a bike 2 months old?

PS: I am new here. Let me know if I am breaking any posting rules.

Bought my Fz25(black) last week, odometer reading shows 320 kms now. From the first time I lay eyes on this beauty I'm in love! And I know I must have one. So I read the specs and watch the reviews on youtube and finally made up my mind and book the bike and after 7 excruciating days I finally got it. I love everything about this bike, the black masculine looks, the torque and gear ratio are wonderful, you can cruise around town in mostly 3/4 even in traffic, the headlight design and looks is awesome but not very practical at night especially on a foggy rainy night. Understandably being a new bike the gear shifter is a little hard when downshifting, especially from 3-2-N-1 as it is still in the break in period. Hopefully it will be smooth as silk after a few more kilometres and after 1st servicing. The thing is I've constantly heard some metallic clanking noise in the rear when I go over bumps and potholes. I'm not sure where the clanking sound originated from. The suspension? The bearings? The drive chain clanging with the hugger and saree guard? I'm not sure. Anyone else experiencing this? Any recommendation?

                                Congratulations for your new bike.

Can't make any assumptions on the sound you are hearing. Would need to check. Check by yourself if tail part, mud fender or what else is tight. Check chain for the slack and also check the suspension by pushing down the bike with your hands on the main stand. Also check the rubber stopper arm of main stand. You may find something or else get it checked.

Update: One more thing, did you tighten your chain ever? If not then the chain is loose and causing sound. My bike chain was loose at 100km. I tighten it myself. Use the adjuster from both sides. Since the chain is new will surely get loose twice before first service.
