But i need to know one thing. Will it matter too much if the bike has been ripped once or twice by someone? I mean the mileage and performance?
You need to read this article...
    www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
i was riding in 3 digit speeds right from the third or fourth day... still get consistent performance and mileage

    • I honestly do believe what that article says. GO RTR! Full throttle break in!

There has been a lot of debate earlier on the different methods of running-in a bike's engine (i.e the motoman method or owner manual specified method). I would suggest you search xbhp for these and go through all the earlier discussions.

I personally followed the owner's manual but I did let the beast loose a couple (or more) times during the initial 1000 kms !

        • Thanks a lot brother
          these are very useful.

Can we get Apache service manual (first revision) which describe engine assembly dis-assembly procedures as well as other details such as fork servicing, carburetor cleaning etc.

I'm sure once you get it you'll most probably stick to proper running in procedure, maybe that will like offset that "ripping" part. Here, I see riders ripping the hell out of brand new B Kings, CBRs those 09R1s like crazy. But when you read their owners manual it specifically say to keep rpms up and rev freely to 10000rpm max(during running in and then go up to 16000rpm at later stages) and not to ride too slow or the internal moving parts wont set in properly. Not that RTR's have similar running in procedure, but you do have to apply a fair amount of stress to the engine so that everything sets in properly. I, however didn't really keep speeds below 50, I rode at 75 and varied speeds accordingly. The bike's now run about 1900kms and everything is ok. Just make sure you keep it in proper condition, don't let your friends ride it and everything should turn out ok. Hope this help
Thanks for the info. That cleared all my doubts.

            • The key to running-in is varying the engine speed and bike speed for all the gears, not nescessarily keeping below 50 kmph.

I usually ride between 60-70 kmph. This should not harm the engine. Also, occasional outbursts to 3 digits is normal, one should not sustain at that speed for long duration in a new bike.

              • unbelievable??? believe it!

                thanx a lot for that...

And now another interesting "news'' for u guys...

today when I was refilling the air in the tyres; (you won't believe this) at the petrol pump there is a machine (for those of u who don't know) it shows the current tyre pressure.
when the Hawa bharne wala started to fill up the rear tyre, the machine showed 62 PSI ...
yes it was 62 psi than it slowly came to 32 psi after he let out the "Excess" air...
I was shocked to see that! so anybody wanna try riding the bike with 62 psi??? it feels the same...

                • Got my beast

Finally i have got my RTR 180. I took the pearl white color. I have to say that it looks really sexy anyway you look at it. Rode 80kms in the first day itself Im controlling myself hard to keep her below 4k rpm for the time being.

But i have noticed a few issues that i would like to share:
                  1. Im getting a lot of false neutrals during gear shifting.
                  2. The idle rpm of the bike is 1.4k but at times when im shifting to neutral its idling at 2k or a little higher than that. Is that normal?
                  3. The engine isnt absolutely vibe free below 4k. There is a hint of little vibration even below that rpm zone. Maybe it will go away after the first service and engine oil change?
                  4. At times its showing neutral on the screen but when im letting the clutch go it shows that the bike is not in neutral.
                  5. The high beam is not aligned properly. Its pointing to the top of the trees instead of the road

Anyways im loving the bike. I can feel the beast lurking in it waiting to pounce at the twist of the throttle but for the time being it has to stay in the cage. And i havent got my manual yet, the guys at the shop told me that i would get it when i get my registration no. So it would be helpful if someone could tell me the running in process in detail. I know that i should keep it under 4k till the first 1000kms but a little more detail would be helpful. Thanks.

who filled 62 PSI in your tire buddy... and how was the ride with that much air.... Well, I have heard somewhere that while fitting tubeless tyres on the wheel, first they inflate it to such high pressure so that the tire seals to the rim... but then it has to be lowered... I mean how exactly did the 62 PSI end-up in your tire?

                    • I too got false neutrals during running in, I think it happens cause of riding the bike at an easy pace. You wont get the false neutrals once you start riding a bit harder. The idle rpm thingy is also the same for me. When I start the bike in the morning it shows 1100rpm to 1400rpm and later after riding it shows something like 2000rpm. There is a horizontal screw under the headlight fairing that lets you adjust the beam focus. It's a new bike, it'll get better the more you ride it. Hard to control yourself on this bike ain't it?

Congratulations for your new purchase. Just keep it easy on the throttle for the first 2k kms. You can give short bursts of 6k-7k rpm after 1k kms. Always try to vary the speeds which will help the engine components to bed-in properly.

Should i try to vary the speed at every gear or only at the 5th gear? For the time being im doing like 40km for 2km, then 45km for next 2km, then 50km for the next 2km and again back and forth all on the 5th gear.

What i meant was varying the speeds at top gear. It's more like doing 40-45-50km/hr in a particular stretch.Do not keep the speeds stuck at a particular rpm in one gear. You can even downshift and ride at those speeds for a short time. What you need to do is gently 'rip' the bike. Just try to keep it below 5k rpm.

RTR has a notchy gearbox and this false neutral thing does not happen always but it do happens....
this cannot be rectified by proper clutch play, nor it'll vanish after the running in...

to get rid of it, learn to downshift with method of "Matching revs" or "blip and downshifting" to eliminate it while downshifting, and while upshifts, slightly blip the throttle while in gear without pressing the clutch and you will NEVER experience it again.

The pressure gauges (mostly the digital ones..!) used in the petrol bulks are wierd ones!. They are not properly maintained or calibrated. It takes some time to stabilize and read the real pressure.
So, the 62 psi was just a wrong reading!!. I've seen 32 psi in the meter even when the hose is not connected to any tyre...!!
Don't believe such things, they are only indicative.
