  • Chain Sound Cause, Cure

    @ all RTR owners

All your complaints about noise from the chain stem from one simple fact, the OEM chain is not very durable. i've seen a few cases where the chain off of RTR's have had to be replaced after about only 10k kms

The only solution is to regularly oil your chain another option is to smear greese all over the chain when its warm and wipe off the excess, its messy but it'll get rid of your niggling chain sound if at least for a while

and when its time for you to replace the original chain sprocket set explore some after market alternatives. i'd recommend Rolons Gold chains as used on the Pulser 220 they tend to lasts well when looked after

Are they RTR ready? I mean the size of the front & rear sporket, are they same as P220?
How much is the cost? The OEM chain for RTR is Rs.909.00 and the new O ring one for Fi & Refresh cost around Rs.936.00.

Never grease the Chain of your bike it may last longer than oil but grease tends to collect mud and the mud cuts through the sprocket. My RTR refresh's front sprocket was worn out in 18k kms but the rear was alright. While changing i found mud inside the cover of the front sprocket. Its run 22k kms know and rear sprocketis still fine.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

both the sproakets are changed along with the chain....
never mix an old sproaket with the new one, like new front and old new or vice versa.......

What i meant is Rolon gold chain for the RTR. Manufacturers tend to produce after market chain sprocket sets for popular bikes, Dont know about availability for the 180 though

                @jasmeetsinghchawla
You are right grease does tend to attract mud but so does heavy oil. The thing with oil is that almost all of it gets flung off the chain within about 20 km's of hard riding and then there's very little to no oil left to attract grime or maintain lubrication while a good heavy grease tends to stick on a while longer. Mud in the front sprocket cover is to be expected no matter what method of chain lubrication you use and it does'int harm the sprocket in any way.

Your chain lasting 18K km is a feat in itself average chain life among the RTR owners i've seen is about 12k where as the newer Fi's and 180 havint clocked up enough km's to judge how their newer chains are holding up

Try SAE 120W oil its much more viscous and harder to apply but it tends to hold on to the chain longer. I used to clean my chain with some diesel and a tooth brush and would apply a drop of 120W oil to each and every link and the chain would'int need more oil for a good 250 to 300 km's

Well nowadays i use OKS chain lube i just have to spray it on theres much less oil fling as compared to oil and it takes much less time

Oh and the grease we use its ordinary axle grease

I was on SAE 90 Gear Oil and Man!it is dirty!I just tried Motul Chain Cleaner and the Lube Spray.
Motul Chain cleaner brought down all the oil and muck present in it.waited 5 minutes, later used a tooth brush to clean and used a cloth to remove the remaining muck. Before that I rode a km to heat the chain.
Then Sprayed Motul Chain Lube and now bike is resting I think this spray will last another 400km or so;right? then ,the chain lube can claims 1000kms which is not possible IMHO.

                          • Me also bought Motul Chain lube about 2 months back. It is also available at Auto Queen(Kaloor). It is a very good product.

Currently my bike is running with motul 3000(20W40). It is just a normal mineral oil. Engine is smoother compared to TVS TRU4. But gears seems to be little harder. But motul 300V(15W50-fully synthetic) is a great product. I have tried it 2 years back. Engine and gears were ultra smooth. But it will give little oil leak as it is of diff grade. Will try Shell 20W40(mineral oil) and Pennzoil 20W40 in the subsequent services. Does anyone tried Shell or Pennzoil before?
