• Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion

Paul is absolutely correct , 50K needs some work related with entire bike.
Proceeding Section wise
1. Engine head

Open head , inspect the valves , if they have play change them . Check cam and timing chain for wear , most probably
timing chain will require replacement
Valves : OE Hero (333Rs)
Timing Chain : DID/Diamond/Rolon ,strictly no for Hero (100-150Rs)
Seals , rings and packing : OE Hero ( Strictly ) ( Variable upto 200RS)

Take notice to change all the seals and packing , dont use old ones.
Clean the head on lathe and ask him to slightly grind new valves with head

Estimated cost of spares : 600 +- 100rs
Lathe Cost : 150-200rs

2.Drivetrain

Always go for Diamond chain kit , if possible DID , Diamond is widely available and comes as OE to Hero. Hero chain will last 12K max , while
Diamond will last 35K+ .

Estimated Cost : 520rs/- + 10/- ( Chain kit + Chain rubber guide )

3.Clutch

Get Oe Hero clutch plates , seals and o rings required .

Clutch plates ( 4 nos i think ) : 335/-Rs
Seal , packing and rings : 50-100/-rs

4.Piston and rings

Check if piston rings are worn , classic finding would horizontal play between piston and cylinder.
If worn ask mechanic as we cannot judge amount of wear . Most probably rings will be. So get new rings standard size.
Again this is a vague advice as engine parts wear diferrently for each bike. Ask mechanic for his advice.

Est cost : 350 + 50 (piston rings + seals etc )

5.Suspension

Overhaul front forks by completely dismantling them and pouring 160ml of oil in each fork
Pump the shocks completely 10-15 times before assembling them
if fork tubes are bent , Get new ones , repairing old one is not a good option as it depends on various factors

Est cost : 100+150 ( Veedol fork oil + OE hero seals X2 )

6. Cables

If clutch and accelerator cables are new then no problem , if used for 1-1.5yrs then it is advisable to change them.

Est cost : 70+70 ( accelerator and clutch cable set )

I am not including mechanic labour charges as it varies from person to person in cities. But surely 500-600rs for whole job is a deal.

Total cost of spares : 2500/-
Grand total : 3000 +- 200rs

I recently did all these jobs and believe me i am in love with splendor , i have stopped driving extreme and using splendor for everything.

@all i talked to painter and he has agreed to paint entire bike in same color and put new stickers , only problem right now is stickers need 10-15 days to arrive .

I always thought splendor if does anything above 60kmph , it will have hard time holding that speeds , today at highway i was driving to friends home and saw the speedo was reading 75kmph and i was thinking i am at 50-60kmph , since i had enough speed i thought of giving some beans and check the top whack , went till 90 easily at 60% throttle.

Man i am not gonna sell splendor ever, 12yrs and still kick some serious a$$ , cant ask for more

As of now I will leave the engine alone and get the other parts like clutch, fork oil, sprockets and chain replaced.

Beautifully explained, thanks @RohIIT.

You're right RohIIT , when I ride my dad's Splendor when I go to my native, sometimes I feel it to be smoother than my Hunk
And the low end torque - you can move over the speed breakers in topgear with two people effortlessly...
And throttle blip and downshift hearing the engine note is a bliss!
And ofcourse, the gear shifts are always smooth whatever crap oil you use.

Guys, what is the time interval to change the fork oil? My splendor has done almost 23k and I'm not sure the asc guys change or even look at the fork during servicing. Also i would like to know what is a good fork oil. Because just like engine oil i plan to buy and give fork oil to asc guys. I don't like the hero honda oil that they use.

Its high time you change fork oil.
Veedol fork oil is the best all rounder and makes the fork perfectly damped. 160ml each fork I think.(use if you ride a mix of good and bad roads)
Servo fork oil is very good (amazingly! And is the only good product from servo imo) and is easily available. This will make your forks quite soft.(use if you ride on good roads all the time)
Motul fork oil lasts the longest but it will make your forks a tad on the harder side. And is the most expensive of the lot.(use if you see very bad roads)
Also change the fork oil seals with new ones, try sourcing oem parts. Clean all the parts after disassembly and dry them then reinstall...
All the best brother.

I dunno about the smell but even my bike gives white smoke after a wash. Goes off if you blip the throttle a few times.

RohIIT has explained all and i have nothing more to explain.

Some area to keep look at especially at 50k kms:-

1. Head cleaning and valve polishing- This is the most important aspect and if not done, no matter how much you work on the bike, it will not give performance, nor mileage. Keep this on the top of things to do.

2. Clutch plates- If kick is slipping while kicking the bike, that means clutch plates are gone.

3. Clean the carb and re-tune it.

4. Check the chain sprockets, rear drum coupling rubber, rear sprocket bearing, front handle racer set.

5. Check the air filter if has gone smaller in size. change that also.

If any doubt ask here.

This indicates that your bore and rings are at end of their life. When the engine is cold the rings are contracted and are smoking. After the engine warms up the rings seal the bore. Nothing to worry as it will still run for another 10-15k before requiring any work.

Wow, man you guys are experts. You just read and understood!
I love this thread!
And im sad that maybe I will have to open my engine up, after so much care the block and pistons are finally going....and my engine has just reached about 79k... I wish it would last 1 lakh kms atleast. Magical no, you see....
But luckily it only happens after a wash or a rain and not in everday cold start. Should I replace the rings or just leav it as it is? For now?
My engine has never been opened for anything except for tappet adjustment and clutch plates changing once!
Also my jijus car was smoking at 200k kms, he said rings ate shot..
He used
Bardahal no smoke extra thick compression restoring treatment along with a new oil change....and the engine stopped smoking! Can I use it on my bike too?

Should I just forget it and ride the way I do and the day it stats smoking badly I should pick up the spanner and buy some parts and get my hands dirty and fix em up.?

Why not give the bike nulon treatment, quite possible that after this treatment you would be able to stretch till 100000kms

DO not add and engine oil additive as they cause deposits in engine and while opening engine will cause a lot of hardship in cleaning the engine. Moreover our engines clutch runs in oil and will cause slippage in the clutch as cars engines are different than our bikes engines. Also bore lasting so long in pulsars is quite good. This is not splendor that bore will last for 1 lac or 1.5 lacs.No matter how much we take care somethings cannot be averted. So after it starts smoking get the engine re-bored and use again.

Good that you got all the parts. But i didn't understand why you got the timing kit as only timing chain and pushrod rubber would have been enough and thats all. After you finish the bottom end of engine, overhaul the top of engine by cleaning the head and polishing the valves, nothing to worry. Just buy a head packing, valve oil seals, head o-ring and timing cover and rocker cover packing. Do all these works and you will feel like bike is out of showroom.Get the diamond Kit from outside shops as Diamond sells it through retailers all over india. And man, everyone is calling sir, odd to hear . AS Mr. SRK has said " SIR BAHOT SARIF SA LAGTA HAI".

So you rode your dads passion pro today. Ya that engine is a Gem of an engine. After all dads are not fools. They are always more intelligent than us but they just do not show. Thats why they always use splendors and passions as those are the best bikes as no electronics and all useless shit.My Joy just feels like heaven after riding the extreme. Its just that that engine has become a legend of sorts. No matter what all commuter bikes have come like Platina, dream yuga, shine and all that but still also when it comes to smoothness, mileage, no maintenance, peformance and trustworthiness then everyone just give the splendor, passions as example.Todays kids( mind it i call them kids as they have not come into reality like us) think that it looks cool when riding pulsars, CBZ, karizma, CBR and also chicks looks at then and also they succeed in getting few chicks. They look into splendor and passion as if it lowers their esteem, but they do not know that it is their fathers who ride them as a result they can ride those bigger bikes. I have seen guys riding CBR's dirty like hell while by the side of their bikes their fathers splendor will standing shining like new. So this defines a biker. As Jashom Statham has said in transporter " A man is known by the cars he keep" similarly is see that a man is known by how he keeps his bike shoeb.2015 and @pual.1911 congrats to you guys for making our splendor/passion/joy/cd dawn thread so popular and now most of members are coming here for restoring their splendors, cd 100 and also passions after seeing you both. Also thanks you both for making others think that i am guru of bikes.
