Change the spark plug cap for sure and spark plug. The problem will go. If still there's a problem then change ignition coil.

I had the same problem and ignition coil was faulty. The sealing on the ignition coil was cracked/damaged and whenever it was getting wet (with wash or rain) the bike stalls & wont start at all as it was losing power. After replacing coil it never stopped at all.

I suppose the Ignition coil sits below petrol tank. Please confirm.

Yes on the left side below the tank. You can locate it via spark plug wire.

I have a Hero Honda CD100 and since the engine setup is pretty much the same, I am hoping some one can help me here.

For a few months now, my engine has been loud, particularly around the head. It also feels very rough to drive. Since I am interested in learning to repair a bike myself, I have been trying to open up the engine as much as I can to fix the bad/worn out parts. It would be great if I could do a complete overhaul of the engine.

I have been able to remove the head. I found out that the timing chain is loose. I have been trying to remove the ignition coil, but I dont know how to remove it and what tool to use.

I have added a picture of the ignition coil with this post.

Also, I cannot remember which way the engine oil drain nut rotates to open. Is it clock-wise or anti-clockwise?

Help from fellow Xbhpians would be much appreciated.

            Thanks.

            • Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion

20 days after change of Ignition Coil, Connecting Wire and Spark Plug Cap, today again my bike was not starting in morning after the downpours previous night.

Everything as discussed in previous posts regarding my problem was checked again without any success.

After hundreds of kicks, it could not be started.

The key was being taken out of and inserted again in the lock.

Suddenly, it was noticed that small amount of smoke was coming out from below the lock, whenever the kick starter was activated.

The culprit was found. The key was moved clockwise strongly. And lo, the bike started as if it was never dead.

I suppose, now, the lock assembly needs to be changed or cleaned thoroughly & checked for loose connection of wires therein, after dismantling.

The Engine Oil Drain Bolt opens anticlockwise, if seen, by peeping from below the engine.

Since it was quite a few months without riding, I planned to visit my hometown again in bike. It was the first week of june, so the velocity of the wind was too high. My bike was only 118 kgs and due to the wind, I was about to take off and fly at any time. I planned to do the journey in 2 days in a relaxed way. This is day 1. The distance covered was 330 km. I rode from Tiruvannamalai to Dindigul district and stayed there. Other than the heavy crosswinds, bike performed well. Completed 29,000 kms on the way. The weather was cloudy all the time. Had a little rain in Karur district. Other than that, the ride was pleasant except for the crosswinds and headwinds. In some of the pictures posted below, you can see the condition of the trees which were encountered by crosswinds.

Thats a japan parts engine. Thats awesome. May be its quite old.

Post some more pictures of the bike, we want to see a japan model engine.

Let me tell you that the new timing chain that you will use will not last half as long as the Japan chain.

The japan timing chain used to Cost Rs. 374 back when my Joy was purchased. The new chain costs Rs. 106 now.

As for removing the magnet you need a magnet puller. You can remove the magnet without puller but if done improperly will damage the magnet.

But before changing the timing chain change the push rod spring and see if the sound decreases. Most of the time its the push rod spring.

                  Man so much photos!.

                  And nice photos.

I think i have traveled by this road when i was on south trip.

What i like about south india is the Highways. Man the surface are excellent. Also the highways are very well maintained.

Here the highways have cracks and also there are lots of pot holes at places.

They collect tolls and when the roads have gone bad they will move the toll gate to another place.

Someday we both will ride together.

Now coming to my Joy then yesterday( i.e on 08/07/2015) my joy completed 15 years. Heck i am far from her at my place of posting and really miss her.

Will meet her on saturday and will celebrate on sunday.

On sunday, will change the engine oil, do general servicing, and wash and wax the bike. Then will take it to temple for Puja.

Yeah it completes 15 years. It was in this 8th of july, 15 years ago we bought her home.
I think it was the first Joy of Odisha. The first Hero bike of the family.
At that time i was in class 8 and have ridden only two strokes. So when i rode her the first time i was taken by surprise of engine braking.
Being a new bike that too hero with tight tolerance, the bike had heavy engine braking, and more harder the kick.

Little at that time did i knew that we are going to have long standing relationship .
Little did i know she will prove to be as reliable as a clock.

No matter rain or sun, she just stands strong. Still feels like the day she came to home.
Life goes on, world is changing but she is constant, like the sun. At almost 4 lacs kilometers she has surpassed the reliability test.

Still original like from factory. People talk about long term ownership at 25k kms. I don't know what i will call at 4 lacs kilometers.

Like all relationships have many ups and downs. But my love for her has grown even stronger.

Like her name she has always given Joy to all my family members. Not only me but whole family is attached to her.
Some of my friends here have also established a connection with her.

Most say she is an in-animate object. But i never have felt so. I can feel that she feels me, talks to me and understands me.

Heck i love her the most in this world.

This a 1989 CD100. I bought it for 5,000Rs a couple of years ago and I have tried to restore and keep the engine in good condition. I gave it to a mechanic almost a year ago and the head was completely replaced. The engine was good for a while, but it has been quite loud and rough to drive for a few months now. To me, it sounds like the piston and valves are making noises in each cycle. When I opened up the head, I found the timing chain to be quite loose.

The push rod spring is the nut with the spring on the side of the head?

In addition to the issue I talked about above, I also notice that the engine oil become black and smells very burnt within a few days of completely replacing with a new can of branded oil. Sometimes the gears dont fall into place either. I would like to open up the engine as much as I can and fix as much as I can. I think it will be a special experience to fix my bike by myself. I am learning as I go along.

I will try to get the magnet puller. Any idea which kind of shop I can get it at? Any big hardware store? Any particular size?

I have some attached some pictures after I got the engine fixed and I spray painted the bike last year. I tried to keep the brushed metal look on the engine case. The two Japanese words are Hero Honda.

The original CD100 came with a "Honda" "Made in Japan" embossed engine. The later ones were Hero Honda. also the ones with the Honda engine should have the old 3 Alphabet, 4 number registration.

The engine is consuming oil and there is no doubt in it.

I would ask you to do a complete engine overhaul for increasing the life of engine.

A complete overhaul consists of changing the bore-piston kit, timing kit, clutch plates, pressure plates, clutch housing and GPT. Also the crank is re-setted with new connecting rod and the main bearings are changed.

Do these and your engine will feel new and butter smooth to ride.

And i am sad to look at the bike. I would request you to restore it to original looks. These bikes are always a joy to look and ride.

                        Update on my Joy

As mentioned in previous post i couldn't be with my Joy on its birthday. So on sunday i woke up early and called my cousin brother to help me.

What we did was washed the bike thoroughly with Armour All wash and wax.

Then i used Roberts liquid polish to remove the surface of any dirt. Last one year the bike hasn't had a coat of polish. Each time after wash only wax was used and no polish. So this time decided to give it a polish.

After finishing polish used paint sealant from Optimum car care to coat the paint with protection.

Then took it to temple to do the Pooja which i do on every birthday.

Every body on way was looking at my bike as it was gleaming like just out of showroom.

Someday we both will ride together..
You are welcome any day so that we can do a long ride in our 100cc's. As you said, almost all highways are in a good shape here, so you need not take the hand off the throttle unless we stop

After 15 long years, joy looks the same. Wishing you many more miles on the little reliable machine.

Congrats. Still looking new. BTW Now that Orissa is Odisha and the registration is changed to OD, aren't old vehicles required to change the OR to OD?

The new registrations are starting with OD. The old OR need not change.

The OD numbers once again was started from new series. So no problem on that. The old numbers will remain as such.

I was searching in some shops to buy a WD 40 spray can. But I was able to buy only a "ZORRIK 88" can of 32 grams. I want to remove a rusted screw behind the visor which has a slightly worn surface since incorrect screw driver was used earlier. Can this ZORRIK be used instead if WD 40? It costed Rs. 60/-
