we can inspect the engine oil by its smell, thickness and color.
Thanks for the detailed write up sir. That was the answer I was looking for. I have passion pro (2014) about 4.8k kms done on it. Recently it has started to give me cold start problems. It has 10w30 stock hero oil. I have done about 1400kms since oil change and recently started facing cold start problem. I opened the dipstick and found that oil has become black and very sticky when taken between fingers. So I think that the time has come for an oil change. Actually the cold start problem started after one day when it was standing in rain. But nowdays there is no rain but still its having problems. Dont know if its because deteriorated oil or some moisture in plug cap.

Should I put some WD40 in plug cap and clean it? I will get bike serviced soon. Lets see what happens.

    Thanks

My bike is emitting black smoke when revved had done reboring at 35K kms and now bike has run a lot good more kms now. HH Super splendor 2006 model . Googled and found that spark plug, air filter and carburetor need to be adjusted.

I had given my bike for service at local mechanic for 500 rs with washing , and dont know what that person does. Opened my airfilter first time DIY. The screws on air filter cover were oiled meaning that he had opened them and oiled and fixed them.

Saw the airfilter of my bike first time, and decided to get it replaced to see that whether the efficiency improves. Bought a new airfilter from the shop original hero one for 140 rs and was shocked to see the color difference between my old and new filter.

Fixed new filter and still black smoke is coming. Did some carb adjustments idle screw / air screw still smoke is not stopping. spark plug doesnt have too much soot on it, but seems this issue started after a oil change i guess. No mechanic is to be trusted these days
, nobody gives genuine advice as to what component needs to be changed for better efficiency. Plan to change spark plug tomorrow and also need to see how to tune carb effectively.

Some tips on carb tuning will be appreciated.

      Thanks

I had the same problem on my cd100, you have solved the issue of air filter and spark plug by replacing them, but now is when the tricky part comes, that is tuning the carburetor. You need to do a complete overhaul. Remove it and clean each and every part with cyclo carb cleaner, it's costly but worth it. Then once it's squeaky clean reassemble the way it was, change the oring if needed. Ensure you don't miss out on any tiny part and the position it was in, like air screw and idle screw washer and oring, spring etc. now refit the assembly on to the manifold and tune air screw to 3/4 turns from fully tight position, this could vary minutely from bike to bike, and also adjust the idle screw to a position just before engine knocks off. This must be done in iterations as the best tuning comes upon a stop run of 10 mins of engine running. If the whole thing was carried out and still there is no significant change, the exhaust is choked and needs to be de carbed which is next to impossible, so you can change the silencer and this would sort it. But before swapping the silencer be sure to check the coil voltages to see if it's right spec , as this could also be the culprit. The head decarboning could also be done by a mech or by yourself if you have the tools and skill. I'm sure this will help, and take your time while you do this. Do it stage wise.

Please suggest methods/ ways for better performance.
That plug is a Bosch U4A if i am not wrong. I dont know about your bike but on my bike passion pro it gave me serious troubles.

Buy a Champion or NGK plug from Hero Service Centre and set the air screw on carb about 1.4 turns out or do full retuning.

Trust me you will notice a BIG difference in performance. Your ride will become super smooth and also pickup will be better than before. Thats the same I felt when I changed my plug from Bosch U4A to Champion PRZ7HC.

My bike is running very less these days but pre-monsoon tune-up work must be done nonetheless . Mainly the brakes , control-cables and wheels .

Cleaned up the rear brake drum with sandpaper then detergent-water . Also filed the rear brake shoes and then used sandpaper to remove the gloss . The shoes are on their last leg (ASK) , I think I adjusted them too tight . They work okay but no more adjustment left in the brake arm . Almost half the brake shoe material is still there . Is this what it's supposed to be or I'm making a mistake ? I do have 2 new sets of OE brake shoes in stock , the cheaper one that is coming now .

Also front brake cable is kaput . The inner does not budge freely with hand or plier . But inner cable is not torn etc at all . Casing plastic is flaked off in 2 spots where it rubs the bike-frame and rust on these points . The problem it was creating is the brake lever wasn't returning to fully seated position when released after use . Consequently the rear brake light was staying on , which I had no way of knowing of course - and this was pulling down the battery very low . This is the original cable I got with bike - six years . I got spare OE cable , shall replace tomorrow - thunder rolled and it started to rain while I was on the job so had to pack for today .

Chain slack corrected , it's at 3.5 mark of the adjuster now - nearing 25k kms . Shall oil tomorrow - same reason .

Cush-drive rubbers are gone hard . Have no spare , shall replace soon . Steering is bit loose , sometimes giving kat sound on hard front braking . All other bearings greased and look okay . Rest to be checked tomorrow . Engine runs pleasantly .

Not these days , mechanics have been like this since I got my first bike in the eighties . We all got shocked when we started looking into things . Then we took matters into our own hands - found there is NO other reliable way . When I got this Splendor , I promised to do service work myself , whatever it takes . Good thing you have also realized this and started with the air-filter . Now do follow up and check one by one what else has been done improperly or not at all on your bike . Start by reading the owners manual throughly and understanding the parts - one by one . Soon you'll have your bike running smooth and happy .

For the carburetor , it first needs to be cleaned up properly before you try tuning . No way you can tune a dirty carb correctly . Here is how I tried doing this , please read - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...tml#post701796

Welcome to the thread brother .

Yes others please do comment on this. I had a mechanic replace shoes in similar condition. And during this when I talked about taking along the old ones back with me he seemed a bit irritated, hence my suspicion.
And people talk about advancing brake cam & what not but I never really understood how thats done.

Local mechanics usually play a jugaad to extend the life of brake shoes, by adding (probably welding) a piece of metal to the brake cam to compensate the wear and tear in the brake shoe. I think you are referring to this.

You can add flattened pieces of tin etc metal to the pivot-post on which the shoes ride, opposite to the cam , for same effect , no need to mod the cam .
But I think advancing the cam means to loosen the brake arm and readjust it on the cam to get it to fit & work . I had to do this also this time as in the arm in it's original position would not reach the brake rod which pulls on it - so I loosened the two nuts that holds the arm and slipped it further towards the rod and fixed it that way . Works for now . Brother Sibun , please advice

Advancing cam and welding plate is different thing. Advancing cam is opening bolt of cam and moving the cam backwards. Usually with time the drum wears a little. So if you use original brake shoe the adjusting will move far ahead on rod. So the cam is moved backward to keep adjusting on initial position. But welding is different thing. It was usually done in scooters. Here two flat square shape gi sheets are welded to the face of brake shoe which sits on cam. The purpose is to run the brake shoe a little longer as they have large amounts of material left particularly scooter.

So now what to do ? My rear brake shoes nearly half the material left but cam/brake-arm adjustment limit exceeded . Should I change the shoes now ? I have spare ready . Or any jugaad
My rear brake use is maximum, because I have to use rear only to make minor control and alter speed because have to ride in congested roads all the time . I use front only when I require to make a full stop .

                        friends,

There is a small doubt, in spoke wheel type bike ,if break drum wear we can change the hub.If the break drum wear on alloy model what will be do?is it replace fully? or there is any solution for it?

I had some issues with alloy wheel hub of my Hunk some time back. The rear brake pad got broken inside the hub and the broken pad scratched the hub badly.
The alloy was taken to lathe and they welded piece of metal inside the hub and finished the inners perfectly to fit the brake shoe. They did a nice job and I had to pay around 250 for lathe work, IIRC.

You can go for sleeving the drum with a new liner. But braking perfirmance would lack and drum would heat up faster. It is better to replace the whole wheel if you want stock like feel.
