  • Yes , here too they drive unruly like that , picking up to speed and last gear rapidly and then braking again suddenly without signal because a passenger yells from rear seat that he wants to get down . Having struck up friendship with a few of them I have some sympathy for them too as I am not sure what kind of patience and rule-tolerance I could have maintained myself had I been compelled by my circumstances to drive so much in sun & rain with passengers who use so unkind words and yells at you day in and out and thru such poor roads and traffic . But many of them are very good guys too ... as is everywhere , few unruly ones bring them shame . Yes , they disconnect brake-lights and don't use headlights much at night , to save on the cost of new bulbs frequently(cost of a 100Rs for new bulbs every month is considerable for them) - I and chide them often about that . You can't see them coming at night from any distance, which is a great nuisance .

The only way to survive kolkata is to go slow and be ready every moment of riding to apply full brakes or leap off the bike and save yourself , I tell this to younger guys all the time , few listens . I have been to Jamshedpur many times , wide and straight nice roads and low traffic , a dream for us to ride , which is why so many bikes there I think . Yes , Park Street here is like a river of vehicles all day and most of the night too(you'll not find a gap in the stream for a moment) ... I always take the metro to go there ... my school was on that very street .

Remember that they have to do it for a living daily . I've visited once on last Dec, was at near park street place...it was so so congested that one cant even put a leg on road. Only walk in streets. My father often visit it.
I dont know how u drive! I can understand your feeling.

But their (auto rickshaws) driving is not good at all. Everyone here hates them, because they were high-tempered, hit the brake and stop on the middle of the road disturbing other traffics. Turns up anywhere without any signal. and didn't follow traffic rules.
Most recent case happened with me 2 days ago. One auto instead of turning from a gol chakker he took a shortcut from a wrong way, and i was coming from the other side @ 50 kph, it was night time and he didn't turned ON his head light. So when i reach the gol chakkar i saw auto on front of me when my head light was put on it. So it was about only 4 meters gap left when i hit the brake hard, he stopped right there and thanks god that i saved.
Even if his head lights were ON, I were new it before that one auto is there on a wrong way.
Yes,these puny rickshaw engines running on petrol don't last long when compared to petrol.
Most probably because the engine oil is injected separately whereas in petrol engines the oil is pre-mixed with petrol which lubricates the bore very well. Most of the rickshaw drivers are very friendly and you can get to know many things from them, there are a storehouse of local knowledge.
You need to be careful with two guys-1.Auto Rickshaw driver 2.Barber. They have a remarkable power of extracting information from people without you knowing.

      • Guys my Passion won't go beyond 95 kmph on full throttle in 4th gear , also before 2 months i have checked it's meter for error by giving my friend to ride it along with me on my ZMR , we took them upto 50 & i found the analog meter is not having any speedo error upto 50 as the speeds are same in both bikes speedo at 30 , 40 & 50 . Didn't checked beyond it as i don't like my bike to ridden / ripped by someone , but at that time have to pick up ZMR after servicing from ASC , so with heavy heart took friend with me to ride one bike home . So maybe my Passion's speed is correct & 95kmph is the top speed for it . Though i don't care about it as its not the main purpose .

@ Pinaki ji excellent posts .

        • It is one of the most reliable bikes in India. Even If i dont use my Splendor for 2 months it will still start in one or at the max two kicks. Whereas other bikes need to be warmed every now and then.

          • This Petrol tap's knob was broken and I wanted to replace it with a lockable tap. I picked up one for Rs.95 and I must say that it is a PITA to use a key all the time.

See the amount of debris ? That's rust. Few days ago I even changed the petrol tap of my uncle's 2001 Passion and the filter was clogged from top to bottom with these particles. Wondering how petrol was even flowing through that.

            • Yes the filter gets stuck with debris, I've taken out 2-3 times of my bike, but now it has got so sticked that it is not coming out and will come out with damaging it....bought a new fuel cock to replace it.

              • The clutch slip has become more evident now, especially while accelerating from 60kmph. My mistake, should have used the OE springs.
I will be replacing the plates this Tuesday(Diwali holiday) and will also measure the spring constant and length of OE vs Local and post it here.

I am still contemplating whether to use new makino plates or OE plates along with new OE springs.

During the second engine overhaul, the speedo was overhauled with new pinions and gears and new hair spring.Even when the bike was new the bike would hit 110 on speedo and the gps speed is 98 kph. But at that speed the bike will be hitting rev limiter frequently. And regarding these speed do not ask me how as every bikes are not equal. Even my mechanic is surprised to see it and his boys love to ride my bike because the more faster it is ridden the more smooth it becomes.

95kmph + is beyond accessible territory for a Splendor, of course, they were not made for that purpose either. Even when you speedo says 95 you might be cruising happily over 85kmph or so in true speed. Trust me I had 2001 millennium edition HH Splendor. Anything over 95 is a miracle.
Splendor and joy are quite different. Do not go by the engine looks and all because inside that engine there is lot of difference in both. Even the company recommended top speed is 90 for splendor and 94 for joy. I remember it completely at that time when hero honda use to display it in their showrooms.By the way at 95 your splendor is at 90 true speed. Hero honda bikes have less speedo error than bajaj. And at 95 kph on my bike the true speed would have been 88-89 kph.

I didn't anywhere say he was finding it difficult to overtake me or i overtook him. Read the post properly and try to understand.
Even I would have tried to peep at you meter, just to check how much of a Speedo error you were enjoying.. hehehe
He looked second time after watching his speedo. And i am not the only one having speedo error as i have never read anywhere that pulsars have accurate speedo. In fact my speedo is having less speedo error than CT 100 and victors.
Anyways Splendor is a great bike, and does what it was built to do,
Mine is not splendor. If you want to know the difference between two then ask me here and i will post the difference between the two and you will know why Joy has more top speed than splendor.
cheers and carry on your discussion.

The hero honda bikes speedo is manufactured by JNS and not pricol. Pricol meters have huge speedo errors but JNS speedo are most accurate. Mine speedo is JNS and i have compared with my extreme, which has the accurate speedo same as ZMR, and at the most at top speed it is 5 kph at fault. EVEN in auto mags i have read that the speedo of my joy is very less error and hero honda bikes have less speedo error.
At 95 you would be at 90 kph.
For starters JNS is a renowned speedo manufacturers and 9 out of 10 cars are fitted with JNS speedo. My joy and passion has JNS speedo. Even the new ZMR,extreme,HUNK which have the most accurate speedo among all bikes meters are manufactured by JNS.

There was no need of buying petrol tap as you get that filter separately and the filter cost Rs.25 and it contains the filter and an o-ring.

Change to OE springs and get any plate you want. I am using makino and you can see i touched 95 and 100 without effort and had still accelerator left.

Who said so. The OE packing balls are ridiculously priced at Rs.63. Instead get SKF as you know SKF is best in balls and bearings and the packet cost only Rs.28.

You can use the battery. Just with a thin screw driver pry the sides of the terminal of acid and clean the terminal. Then put some soldering paste on it. Strip the wire and clean with a blade of any carbon and apply paste. Then with a soldering iron apply some solder on it and insert the wire through the wire hole and solder it on the terminal. Be careful while soldering as too much heat will melt the plastic around the battery. The soldering should be swift and clean. After the soldering has dried pull the wire to see if it is fit properly. If it comes out solder once again. Better to take to auto electrician. After soldering mix BONDTITE UNIWELD or mix ARALDITE RAPID and pour on the terminal till it is full. usually one packet is enough. Just mix the two tube on a flat surface with a match stick and when it mixes pour it on the terminal till it gets full. The araldite will prevent acid to leak once again and again corrode the terminal and your battery will last. This happens because of acid leakage and for this reason this battery are outdated and amaron has taken its market.

Been there for 2 times for two different battery wala (exide) by paying 50/- , but not last more than one week, they fix it by soldering but it come off due to acid. Found some Jell battery (suggested by my mech) manufactured by some unknown company around 450-500/- bucks, but I can't convince myself to go with it.

So now after replacing the whole starter-magneto assembly (thanks for the tremendous help of you guys 6 months ago) I'm still short on horn-signals and everything.

Hi sibun, again your post is the ultimate solution of any problem, Your DIY type post are true asset of this community. Thank you so much.

Every local bike's spare shop here said HH don't sell handle ball only at least for past 6 months, either I need to buy the full HH ball racer set cost 225/- or I can go with Pulsar ball which costed 15/- a pack. For the time being I choose later.

                              ------------

Anyhow where I can get BONDTITE UNIWELD or ARALDITE RAPID ? Is this two available in normal hardware store ?

About my battery, after 2 attempt with 2 different battery wala, I done the soldering process myself. First toss the white terminal battery cap, then clean the hole with luke warm water, all acid debris get clear, strip the wire little bit and once terminal get dry do the solder by noobish experience and feel the remaining hole with grease. In this way it last 4 + months. But now it seems again geting loose, sometimes the horn/neutral light all out as well as fuel gauge.

I want to stick with this battery, if those 2 mixture available easily in my place.

On the other hand, Can you quote the model name & approx price of the amaron battery which can replace this one ?
