i will take it to the ASC this weekend, but just in case, have you guys faced any issue like this??
I had almost exactly same issue and it was becoming impossible to find out the culprit... So what was done? First make sure the chain tension is right then checked if the chain was hitting somewhere but none found and surprisingly it disappeared and we never came to know what was the cause

There ain't no mud flap for TBTS. We have to put some other vehicles mud flap only. But don't know which one.

I would go by simply following the below steps.

                1. Ride at a considerable good speed and slide the bike into neutral and turn the motor off, if its the chain then it would rattle.

If you do the above and nothing happens, then

                2. Ride at a considerable good speed in final drive and then close the throttle, letting the bike slow down. If you hear clatter then its the primary chain.

                Works 100% of the time

                    Gotcha..

Will do. Still, just saying the issue is as you described in the 2nd point. I will test and then see again.

Also, what is chain and primary chain??

Drive chain in the chain outside the motor, Primary chain is the chain inside the motor, which operates the cam and valves.

Speaking of the that, your bikes are prehistoric, so the setup is different. If my memory is right in your bikes the primary chain transfers power from crank to clutch.

that i completely agree. infact, i'd love it if RE decided to overhaul the engine design to produce more power. quoting myself here from another thread.

Also, refine the engine for more power to weight ratio. not make it a racing bike per se, but i look at the CBR250 and it has more power, and almost same torque at 250cc...

obviously, i admit its japanese engg and everything, but still..

anyway, its just my opinion, you guys are free to argue against it
                        anyways,

Though it is generally unreliable, I would vouch for it, solely due to the fact that these bikes are perfect for tourers as they are easy to fix. And would not set you back by a day or a week if something goes wrong in between, much unlike the modern japs.

                              ok i did this.

slid bike into neutral and no sound is there.
but if i let it slow down in gear, then sound is there.. so is the primary chain the culprit here??
