It had been quite a while since the air filter in my ninja had been cleaned. IIRC the last time it was cleaned during the second service or maybe even earlier.
So i finally got down to it yesterday. Had already bought around half a liter of diesel and 60ml of 2T oil (couldnt source the SAE 30 oil which the manual recommended).
Removed the side panel from the bike and the air filter. It was covered with black grime (carbon deposits, oil, dust and more). Poured the diesel onto a pan and soaked the foam element in it. Squeezed the filter quite a few times in the diesel to loosen and dislodge the dirt and grime. The result was that the diesel looked like crude oil. LOL. Disposed the dirty diesel and poured the remaining into the pan and repeated the process.
After the second round of cleaning, I squeezed the filter element dry and then squeezed it again in between a highly absorbent piece of cloth. Poured the entire contents of the 2T oil (60ml) and folded the foam element so that the oil penetrated every corner. Then I squeezed out the excess oil and again in between layers of a cloth.
Plonked the filter back in and the side panels. Pretty easy job and took me only 20 - 30 odd mins for the whole exercise. Expecting the bike to perform better (smoother) now. Will post an update on this part after the weekend ride.
Thanks to Bluevolt and Killer Instinct for tips and advice.

Good Job done Aditya...
Had a query,.. when i clean the airfilter... i clean it with soapy solution (a very mild one) and wash it with water .. multiple times to remove all the dirt and then squeeze it a bit and keep it on the newspaper to dry off the excess water... and under the fan also....
Then i also show some sun to it....
and then check it for complete dryness... then after that apply a layer of SAE 90 oil to it...
This complete process takes a day... but finally feel statisfied that after washing the filter.. their are no dust particles left behind...
Is that also a correct procedure to do it... ??RIP Marco

One question, did you also clean the K&N Air filter which is eating dust in your house?Originally posted by n_aditya View PostIt had been quite a while since the air filter in my ninja had been cleaned. IIRC the last time it was cleaned during the second service or maybe even earlier.

I dont know about Ninja, but for other bikes (Apache)
The SVC people take out the filter and wash it in petrol and then put engine oil on it and then put it inside.
It takes hardly 10-15 mins to do that.Speak Less,Speak Wise!

Not sure if its correct or wrong but IMO its better to use diesel since it cleans very well. Bike chains are also cleaned using diesel for this very reason.Originally posted by vkuchhal View PostIs that also a correct procedure to do it... ??
Try using diesel and you'll be surprised at how much dirt it can get out of the filter compared to soap solution.
Lol. The K&N is still in its sealed packaging. Not long before it starts duty.Originally posted by Hyperion View PostOne question, did you also clean the K&N Air filter which is eating dust in your house?

Petrol is not recommended as it is highly inflammabe. Diesel on the other hand has a high flash point and does not ignite easily. Plus, diesel is cheaper than petrol and does not evaporate as fast as petrol.Originally posted by haxor View PostThe SVC people take out the filter and wash it in petrol and then put engine oil on it and then put it inside.ATGATT - Because hospital ceilings are boring !!!

@Adi - I don't know if Ninja has a oil type filter or paper. Guess its oil type. In that case, use Petrol to clean up, the advantage being, Diesel doesn't evapurate while Petrol does, giving a fresh look to your filter.Originally posted by n_aditya View PostIt had been quite a while...an update on this part after the weekend ride.
Another cheap method for oil based filter is, simply use a dish washing liquid to clean the filter & soak in engine oil.Skill is what keeps you on a Motorcycle

only the last part... SAE 90 oil the viscosity is more its used as a chain lube and will sort of block smooth air flow. better to clean your filter again and apply SAE 30.Originally posted by vkuchhal View PostGood Job done Aditya...
