  • Someone in my office parking dropped my bike. The result is below, dent on tank with paint broken, minor scratches on the fairing and handlebar head.

I checked with PBK in noida and they told me to go for the claim. Best case since the tank is dented at a joint they might approve a tank replacement which will be 100% covered. If they approve a repair then the dent will be removed and the tank will be repainted. This too will be 100% covered but I will be required to pay for the decals. The mechanic told me that the new paint will not be the same however the customer care was of the opinion that it will be like the original.

Can anyone advise in case a repair is approved should I go ahead with or leave the dent and paint as it is. Any other suggestions are welcome ...

P.S: cost of new tank Rs. 17500/-

    • I guess you can Mask out that chipped out paint with a good quality sticker.

Spend the above said amount on fuel and ride down instead. Anyday better than taking the packing and moving option.

after the repair if you are going to keep the bike in the same parking... well a touchup job may be fine. but the thumb rule may be cosmetics 2nd priority for replacement ( your case ) mechanically / damage affects performance then replacement is the way to go with or without insurance. it may not be worth loosing the no claim bonus on your insurance.

          Another Ride

After missing rides twice with sunny side up i wanated to just ride ( yesterday 11th dec 10, sat, got caught at office till 8-00 pm. so something had to be done on sunday. so had a loose plan ( i can backtrack any time ) to ride from vellore and yercaud hills salem and back. also to check how much i can cope with long rides. so did 525 kms today from 6-30 am from vellore to 3 -00 pm back to vellore. the roads from krishnagiri to salem has some nice stretches to push your ninja and today she could do 150 kms on the speedo. had some check drive sort for my bike. she could accelerate(shoot) well till 120/130 with the right gear changes. but at 120 if have to shoot, its well i was just not happy even if you play on the gears. my ninja tells me that i am on 120 please twist the throttle hard and wait a second, and a second also is too much sometimes. so the games will happen only between 80 to 120/130, yes .... yes....you are in bliss absolute. bike toady gave mileage of around 25 kms to a litre. i matters just because you can fill only unleaded fuel and there are not many pumps enroute that give you premium fuel. to conclude i have my reservations about doing more than a 100 kmph on this stretch due to the wide variety of dogs and all the cute cows( yes i had to do a super braking today to prevent sending a black dog into orbit possibly me too ?) the front brakes are good , the trick is to hold on to the bike when you do quick brake and use your arms to good effect.

while climbing the hills the temp was on the high side, but coming down it was on low, and long stretches at 120 kph she was again on low. cool...

If I'm not mistaken your bike is pretty new - and your angst at this damage to your bike especially since you didn't cause it is quite understandable. However if you feel that you can live with the damage and resort to a minor repair job/sticker camouflage as someone else suggested, then I would recommend the same.

Heaven forbid that your bike should actually suffer from some more serious damage in the near future - but we live with chaotic traffic conditions and it's more likely than not, unfortunately. At that time when you actually have some major claim to make, it might not bode well for your claim if you already have a claim in the same year albeit it not being your fault. I would hate to think that an insurance appraiser disallows or is stingy with some larger claim in future simply because you already have one in your records.

I could be wrong but that's what crossed my mind when I read your post and just wanted to share my thoughts.

In the meanwhile, you should take some steps if possible to ensure that the same doesn't happen to your bike in the future. Perhaps this might be as simple as 'befriending' the security at your building.

I think I can do with the current damage. My bike is relatively new but the ride quality is unaffected by the fall. I was a bit worried about rust forming on the tank due to chipped paint. Any tips for that??

Saw this post after my previous so the second post.

Sorry we missed you - 3 Ninjas (and a Comet) from Chennai joined 4 Ninjas from Bangalore yesterday for a ride to Yelagiri.

The Chennai riders - Rajivvenky, HellsAngels, Sunnyside_up! and Ravi (not an Xbhpian) - The Bangalore riders - Aditya, Merlion, Ark and Alok.

5 greenies, 2 blackies and a bright Yellow Comet was a sight to see!

The ride up the hill was superb and a lot of fun, changing gears and enjoying the torque of the bike. First time I had been to Yelagiri and it was (in my opinion) far better than even the 70 hairpins that we experienced at Kolli hills last week. That ride too was with 3 Ninjas from Chennai. (Rajivvenky, SenthilDSK, Sunnyside_up!) I haven't done Yercaud yet - so maybe we can do it sometime in Jan!?!

My observation is that the Ninja is absolutely in its element when the road surface is good and dry (Yelagiri) but a little skittish when roads are wet and broken (Kolli). However the bike's eagerness to lean into curves and ability to power up a slope left me grinning inside my helmet all the way.

The Salem-Krishnagiri stretch that we did last week was scenic, smooth and offered great visibility of the road for long stretches and we were able to really max out the bikes. 3 Ninjas screaming at 13K RPM at 160+ on a road that really allowed us to wring the throttle wide open was an experience I will treasure all my life.

I have a poser for the forum though - one of the ninjas from Chennai this week suffered from a peculiar problem. The bike handled normally in all respects, except that at 9.5K rpm, the bike would just shut down - the engine would just stall and all electricals would just cut out, leaving the hapless rider to coast to a stop. After switching off and on again, the bike would restart immediately and function normally again. The same bike encountered the same problem three weeks ago on another group ride and was immediately referred to PBK Chennai, suspecting some problem with the plugs or EFI. Since this has happened again after the inspection of the plugs and the FI, what could be the problem?

Nursing our ailing fellow Ninja, we all rode back from Yelagiri to Chennai today and as long as it was below 9.5K RPM, the bike performed flawlessly!

Yes, he broke his leg. He was under 40 kmph. He was behind an autorikshaw, the rikshaw suddenly took a turn without any indicators or hand signal...so the ninja rammed into an electrical post. The boy is my neighbour.

rev limiter kicking in at the wrong RPM ? ECU of the ninja to blame ? ninja unfortunately a complex blend of electronics and Mechanical. kindly post the solution in this post for everyone.

                    • Today I dropped my ninja. While I was taking a turn at 7 pm I saw a boy on a bicycle were coming from the opposite side into me without headlight. He was very fast, I saw him, so I was riding slowly to allow him to pass me, but he was shocked and his handlebars were shaking. I felt danger and suddenly I moved my bike to the roadside and suddenly stopped it, byt there were lot of sand and front tire slipped. I droped it slowly from standstill. Actually while dropping it I was looking on the boy because he were going to hit a roadside parked car, thats why I couldnt concentrate on the ninja hence dropped it. But the boy safely stopped it by hitting the steps of a shop.

The boy was under 16 and he was riding bicycle very fast at night without headlight and brake. I advised him to not ride bicyle very fast at night without light and barke. But after some time I saw him again, he was riding like before.

Some of my friends were there, they came and picked up the bike. Luckily no scratches on fairing. Broke the right indicator glass and bulb. very small bend on the front brake liver and some minor scratches on the handlebar end and silencer chrome. Nothing else.

I know the price of the indicator is Rs 1500. But, can anyone tell me...what is the price of the front brake liver? Since the damage is very less, should I claim insurance?

can you see bare metal of the tank ? if not you are okay. for touch up there is a crude way. use cheap(ordinary) black nail polish. nail polish are usually nitrocellulose paint. other wise buy half litre(or less 50 ml is enough if they give u) loose NC paint. with a water colour brush touch up the part. using a spray can can have bad consequences if you do a foul up during the painting.

THe guys charge on a per weight basis and they charged me around 15 Re/Kg. This varies in into/from the region you are shipping. The same bike was send to Kerala on a 11 Re/Kg basis (bcos they thought I was an Army guy ) !!

So the dent on your wallet should be roughly in the region of 3K to 5K!!

                          Here is a break up
                          Freight = Bike wt * Charges/km
                          ROV charge = 200 bucks
                          Basic Charge = 175
                          Diesel Charge = 17.5% freight
Service Tax =12.5% of the total of above.

Quote the lowest weight as possible . There should be a weight on your RC book, should be the dry weight which could save u some money

My experience with GATI has been good. No problems in three transfers in the last year (except for a delay once). But make sure your bike is packed extremely well in bubble packing with hard card board over the bubbles. If ur a little apprehensive about the plastics, take off ur rear view mirrors, fairings and indicators and even the lamps and carry it with you when u fly.

Believe these guys dont offer insurance on their cargos and its the shippers risk. If you are concerned contact a bank for additional insurance on your cargo or ask these guys about the insurance. I didnt ask for the same bcos (it was a bullet!) Since your company would be paying, take the excess insurance. Take clear photos of your bike before just before you ship which would come in handy if something might happen to it in shipping. When you recieve the bike check thoroughly for damages and get it signed off (if there are any damages) by them if you want to claim insurance.

                          Hope this helps you.
Thanks for the pointers buddy...when u headed back to Pune...groan...I so wish I'd got a job there instead :P

try good and reputed movers and packers like Agarwal Movers and Packers. They cover the cost of any damage done to the vehicle during transit. If possible click pictures before they start packing.
Gati seems to be the best option as per most...I've got my pulsar transferred by Agarwal earlier...they seem good too

                          • I have to transport my bike by Train to Chennai in Jan. I needed some advice on the precautions to be taken.

                            1. I have to drain all the fuel from the bike before I board it onto the train. Will this cause any harm to the injectors?

                            2. The bike will be parked on the side stand. Will it be stable enough or is a paddock stand absolutely necessary?

                            Any other tips?

I dont think its the Rev-limiter. The bike is not being retarded, but turns off completely.
