I'm no expert on this, but logically speaking here's what i think. Please tell me if this understanding is correct:
I think every mechanical component that comes between the engine and the wheel - like the clutch, the gears, the chain and sprocket - will take a part in absorbing the shock caused by the difference between the wheel speed and engine speed when we make a clutch less shift, and thereby take some hit (no matter how small). For this reason, an old bike with worn clutch and a slacking chain will probably be more tolerant to a clutch less shift, and provide a smoother shift.

    Is that a correct understanding?

      Is that not true?

It's indeed an awesome feeling! [emoji2] but I almost always refrain from doing it for the above notion I have.
It's not going to cause any significant damage to clutch. But it will affect the gears when done improperly. Proper clutchless shifting will be near identical to clutch shift since it moves the collars to engage gears at the appropriate moment. On the other side, improper clutch shift can cause even more damage. As long as you shift properly, it's not going to cause any trouble.

Yes, your understanding is absolutely bang on! There is some damage in the form of premature wear and tear of clutch plates.

The main advantage of using a clutch for anything other than setting off, is simply that you have more control. On the street, that can be very beneficial. Overall, though, because of the constant mesh design of motorcycle transmissions, you are not looking at significantly increased wear or tear, unless you have the dogs bounce over each other (Kind of like when you mis-shift and don't hit any gear), that's when damage can occur.
Clutchless upshifting allows for quicker shifts, often time smoother shifts. The main reason why often time clultchless downshifts are not good, especially on the track, is because of engine braking.
Back in the old two-stroke days, you had almost no engine braking, but with our bigger 4-strokes now, whenever you let off the gas, the engine itself is working against the rear tire, slowing you down. When you are going at high speeds, such as on the track, are under hard braking, etc., this can cause your rear tire to get light and subsequently lock up. This is where you want the control of your clutch, slightly feathering it so the tire does not lock up. Other than that, downshifting is as easy as upshifting without a clutch, it's just a question of reversal. Upshift - cut the throttle, bang up the gear. Downshift - blip the throttle slightly and bang it down.

The dog saga continues. I have a few bruises, but the bike took it all. Thankfully, the dog survived (however such rogue dogs piss me off real bad).

Post rains, all roads have gravel. Classic tire lock scenario and still the moronic dog didn't budge. I hit it head on. It limped away. I guess I was at 35-40 type speeds. It was as service road.

                          Take care Bhai
I too have had 2 such situations (broken road & gravel) after the rains.
It really pisses me off that even after paying the highest road tax we have roads like this. :-(
