  • Re: Hero Honda Karizma ZMR

    Hey guys,

I own a Honda CB Twister and was considering replacing the rear suspensions with the GRS suspensions on the Hero bikes. The main reason I'm considering this is because the rear suspension on the twister is very hard and causes back pain. Off late I've been taking the bike off roading too, so I was wondering if anybody could throw some light on this query of mine? I really don't know if it's a futile project, I'm still attempting to collect information.

    TIA!

    • Is it okay to buy from old stock of a bike which has been discontinued 2 years ago?

      Hello Revheads,
For the past few months I was searching for that perfect blend of a bike for touring and in the process, finalized the Street 220, Apache RTR 200 & Karizma ZMR..
But Now I am facing a much bigger dilemma. While calling several dealerships, I cam across one which has the Karizma ZMR on offer BUT not the 2014 version...
THEY HAVE THE OLDER VERSION OF KARIZMA ZMR. Manufactured in 2014 and kept in stock at the dealership.
      Now, my question is:
      1. Should I buy the bike knowing that the bike is almost 2 years old (although new).
      2. What are the problems that I will face in future?
      3. Being an old bike is it even legal to buy, I mean will i get the warranty and stuff?
      4. Will the resale value be affected (being manufactured in 2014)?

Sad to see Hero messed up with the capable tourer. I was keenly looking for ZMR and ended up with Yamaha R15S. Within 10 months my bike has completed 18k kms wish I could have munched those miles in super comfortable ZMR. The Positive for R15S is engine still fresh like the day i picked the bike, unbelievable mileage and no back pain which I was worried/feared the most. Infact it never gave any shock to my spine like pulsar did. I still turn my head when white ZMR crosses ..Shame on you Hero

Among the bikes you selected, ZMR will be definitely the most comfortable. My zmr is now 6 years old, I have maintained it perfectly and it performs as good as a new one. Many guys ask me whether it's a newer version of zmr!
I know the modern motorcycles like r15, cbr's, benelli etc are way ahead in technology and are much more sports oriented, but nothing can compete the comfort level provided by karizma/ZMR. I have toured more than 800 kms in a day on my ZMR with relatively high comfort and zero back pain. The suspension is the softest compared to motorcycles of this weight/engine category. This results in best shock absorption on bad roads, but it results in loss of confidence under high speed turns when compared to sports oriented motorcycles.

My only problem with my ZMR is that I have become addicted to its comfort and can't buy a new bike even if I want to! Everything else seems uncomfortable for touring purpose.

          Your answers:
          1. Go ahead and buy it without a doubt.
          2. If you rely solely on service center for maintenance then you won't be too happy with it. The main issue with this model is the fairing vibrations. I have completely dismantled the fairing myself and used foam tape on all joints to reduce vibrations. you won't have any engine, fuel injection related problems ever.
I do recommend to change both tyres as soon as you buy it, stock tyres suck! Both the MRF tyres are hard rubber, economical type, they slip too easily on road especially on turns. Also put osram nightbreaker 55w h4 bulb in headlight, the stock headlight is too underpowered.

          3. How can it be illegal just because it's old? It will be completely legal as per the traffic regulations. And if the dealer is selling it as new piece, company is bound to provide warranty. If not, I am certain the dealer will provide warranty on his own.

          4. Resale value will be affected a little, as it's discontinued now. But you will be able to sell it at higher value compared to those who bought it in 2014, that's for sure. But I don't think anybody should consider resale value when they are looking for a comfortable tourer. Resale value is a botched up concept, it has no relation to the good qualities of a motorcycle like durability, reliability, comfort level. Resale value depends largely on the mindset of buyers of used bikes, who are much more interested in tashan factor rather than the above mentioned factors.

Let's start off with measurements. Are Twister and GRS of the same sizes in length?

AFAIK, the Hunk's GRS shocks are a direct fit to the twister - it can even be bolted on using the stock bolts. Also, I recently found out the the Pulsar 150's rear nitrox suspensions are also a direct fit. By direct fit, I mean the eye to eye measurement is the same.

In that case, you can go for Hunk's. Pulsars shocks are a little stiffer (better on curves and worse on straight roads and potholes).

Week back changed my ZMR Front and Rear Tyre....

For Front I choose ZAPPER FQ

For Rear I choose Zapper Q 100/90 TL

Both is having a good grip...

I was searching for Zapper Y 110/90 TL...but did not get it...however when i view the tyre in xtreme sports (it is coming with Zapper Y 110/90 TL)...looks like a 100 section tyre....not as 110 section...

Earlier I was using Pirelli 110/90...but due to soft compound rubber; faced lots of punctures (approx 30)...grip was completely lost...even in slight curv on road ...feel like bike going to slip....also was feeling bike is sticking / holding from rear....

On 27th Nov, when I was on my way back from a ride my trip meters had reset on the way (I normally use Trip 1 to track a full tank and Trip 2 to track service interval) but both were reset to 0. And a couple of days back when I started the bike a morning, it again reset to 0. Next day it was raining and I was riding with Headlamp ON to work and the moment when I parked the bike and turned down to lock and take key, I noticed that the display has been Off even before I turned it off (No Display. No C U Soon message as well). And the bike refused to start that evening at work. Tried to push start in gear and then read few posts that it might be dead battery as I have never changed it (bought in 2013 July ). Next day mechanic came with a spare battery and swapped it, surprise! Bike didn't turn on. No display. Then they had a look at the fuses and one (the blue one) after changing with the spare gave life back.
Battery is good. Stock one. 3.5years or 56000kms old.

Yes, there are 2 fuses for the console area alone - one just for the clock and another for all the rest (ODO, trip, speed, tach etc)
Don't neglect the console getting reset from next time.

Such issues are usually related to faulty fuses or conked off relays.
