Any pointers on how to judge the clutch plate wear?
See the best and traditional method to check the Clutch plate wear and tear is to take out the clutch plates ( obviously after draining engine oil and taking out all nuts and bolts) and then measure the thickness of all the plates ( the pressure plates ) as well as the others. If the thickness is below the specified level(which when seen clearly can be found out ), then the clutch needs replacement.

But, But , But .. we people generally dont tend to see all these things, and we believe our conscience, that is , when the acceleration seems to have dropped, that means clutch plate needs replacement. But every time this is not always the case. There might be several other things which results in dropped acceleration.( which has been depicted in earlier pages )

Generally the clutch plate replacement varies. It depends on how you ride. If you engage disengage too often,or do a rapid clutch engagement, all contribute to low clutch life. So there is absolutely no life span for clutch life. Its all interdependent.. I have replaced my clutch plates at arnd 25K Kms. And one of my friend who also rides a 220 fi , replaced his first clutch plates at around 50K kms.

IMO better check the clutch plates and if it needs replacement do it, otherwise check out the other things that are leading to dropped acceleration.

Figure out what speed does the Dtsi 220 does at say 5K or 6K rpm in topgear. And check your bike's speed at the same RPM, if your clutch is bust then it will be showing lesser speed due to clutch slippage!

When the acceleration drop is unacceptable or you are going on a long ride to the hills - its time to change it.

45K! Holy shite, Mine are generally finished by 20K, sometimes even earlier!!

The Braking is fine. You can blindly believe Pirelli..

        REAR - 130/70/17 - Price: 3500

        FRONT - 100/80/17 - Price: 2500

( Now, there is 10% increase in the import duty of the tyres, so i dont know what will be the price as of now..)
Below is the picture of the same.
Ok..Price is on the high side but i guess..thats pirelli..so i'm ok with it

I'm a lil concerned about the profile of the rear, 130/70 would be on the lower side of the stock right..and coming from a Sirac(high) down to this one, wouldn't it rev my engine quite a bit higher at the same speeds compared to the old tyre? For eg. what's your speed at 4k rpm in 5th gear? And I'd prefer top end to acceleration.

@Praful: You've used an IRC front tyre right? I cant remember the name and the profile,I'd like to know your view on those and any other tyres you could suggest. And whats the difference in the feel of a Zapper vyde and the Sirac,I assume you ridden on both.

        Thanks in advance

          Thanks Mik.
The acceleration drop is something i can live with since its not that substantial. However when with heavy pillion the bike tends to loose it . Uphills riding single isn't a problem though...recently did a trip to a fort and had to ride a couple of kms uphill....no problem whatsoever.

Yep, the 130/70 profile will make the bike shorter geared compared to stock! i.e. more revvy in nature. You will be doing the same speeds at higher rpms. With stock tyres , the Fi does 83 @ 6K RPM, with the Sirac it does 88 @ 6K RPM, I think it does about 80 @ 6K RPM with the PSD.

Do you have the same speedo as Mav? If not then the speedo readings will be the same. I have the older black back speedo.

I've used the IRC Wildflare WF-920 90/90-17 tyre. That's the best front tyre I've used on my bike ever. If you find it do lemme know, I will pay for the shipping charges

Vyde is awesome, fantastic for cornering. Straightline braking grip is a little lesser than both the Sirac and stock FS though. And its a really soft compound tyre, mine wore off in 10K kms.

Hmm,I kinda like the higher gearing with the Sirac, lovely for highway-rides.
So maybe the pirelli rear's are not for me.

My old speedo(black) conked off around 29k kms :-/ .I have the new(old) white ones now,but how will the speeds be the same?

I doubt I'll be able to find the IRC if YOU can't find it .Which is the best choice after that?

Just out of curiousity, how long did your Sirac's last?mine have started slipping and sliding quite a bit after 18k kms.

Yep PSD's are not for tourers!

The white ones are prone to higher error and hence there is a difference between the reading between the two.

The first Sirac started skidding at about 10-12K, replaced it at 16K. The new Sirac started skidding at 2K. Done about 15K now, wondering what to replace it to.

The second Sirac was atleast 50% less grippy than my first one. Michelin India has refused that there is any compound change, and I can't just can't digest that!

                • Hi,

finally for the rear i've decided to go for the Sirac again, its one helluva tyre.

Now for the front,I've given up on wildflare,so its between the zapper or the pirelli PSD front.i dont want to go for the fz front tyre again.

How well will the PSD front work with the Sirac? any idea?

                  • Congrats.. for getting a Sirac . Its not available here in BLR

Front tyre even I'm for the front tyre after trying heaven and hell for sourcing the Wildflare front. Have almost given up for now, will never go for Zapper FX EVER!

You can give PSD a shot, will be better than Zapper FS mostly!

Congrats for the SIRAC (once again ).. Once a Sirac, Always a Sirac.

For the front, I would better suggest with Pirelli SD, which will be a perfect Match. They OK regarding grip and roadholding ( which I am feeling it currently with mine).
But, these are quite sensitive to uneven roads when a bit worn.

Sirac is no where available in Bangalore. I tried for almost 2 weeks and at last spoke to Mr. Venkat @ Autoservice. He recommended me Bridgestone Battlax or MRF Vyde after knowing the roads i commute on.

I am running on IRCs for 10k kms, the rear one has lost its life and provides no grip in rains. So which one do you suggest? PSD doesn't seem apt to my usage. I commute on horrible stretches of K'kpura Roads.

PS: Check this out Michelin Sirac Tire. Size: 120/90-17 - 2,750.00Rs
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "Wow! What a Ride!"

dude by putting sirac in rear , suppose a puncture occurs ! how d o u deal with it ? as the tyre is non tubeless.

i had this concern straight from start but never asked.

i knw it can be fixed directly to the rear as tubless but if puncture occurs ?
and does it lose air frequently ? ?

and i have a IRC front tyre changed it 1 k back and the tyre is best to what i have ridden. I dont knw its name but its 110/70 (only the width size increase) gives awesome braking, conering is simply good. bought it for Rs2k will post the pics soon (right now me in office)
