Engine braking is where the retarding forces within an engine are used to slow a vehicle down, as opposed to using your disk (or drum) brakes. You've felt engine braking yourself, but just havent realised it since you didnt know what it was..

Imagine ur accelerating, you go from 1st gear to 2nd and then suddenly notice someone crossing the road ahead. You let go of the throttle without pulling the clutch in, and you feel the bike slow down. THAT is engine braking.

It is useful to use engine braking as you can increase the life of your brakes. For example, when ur riding on an open stretch and notice traffic stopped at a signal ahead, instead of braking when u've almost reached the stopped traffic, you downshift to a lower gear and let engine braking slow u down, and finally use ur brakes to come to a complete halt when ur almost there.

I've explained it in as simple language as i can, if someone could do more justice to this query, please do.

i think u also learned something from it ... all i say is .. with power comes a responsibility .. and a good rider is not one who steers his bike like toy .. but one who responsible enough to hold himself as to not cause problem from him and ppl around him ..

little patience ... little common sense ... little situation awareness ... and little respect for the machine .. can avoid accidents and make u a good rider..

Awesome words , writely said... totally agree with you.

I graduated from XCD 125 to ninja 250. in terms of cc double but in terms of power 3.5 times.

I have seen new Ninjas (done around 200 or 500kms only) standing in PBK for major repairs of accident.. That is because of uncontrollable power.

I am not a guru.. still in learning stage to control that massive beast.. but when i daily ride my bike.. i try to learn and remember the new things..

          • I installed stock tyres on my R15 2 months back and since then I've clocked around 3000 kms, the rear got its 6th puncture yesterday and now I'm losing out on air pressure at the rear. Today I searched the whole j c road for the tyre gel/anti puncture gel whatever.. but without any success.
Question for Bangalore guys:Where can I get those tyre sealants/gels/anti puncture gels in Bangalore???
And if I apply them; will it be effective now, after being punctured for so many times???
