Honestly entering a creatar at 100+ is the last thing one will do or one can do. (coming out and staying alive are questionable) but I have done that and mind you, sevrel times I had managed to come out riding on wheels insted of wheels riding on me!

So every 2nd morning before starting off for grocery shop or a trip to Andaman and Nicobar do not forget to check/judge the tyre pressure!

Try to enter the pothole in the most vertical way and come out of it in the same way!

Always keep an eye on road(if there are no girls around) and try judging the pothole, whether its deep, shallow but big, or any type, and try avoiding it!

Do not squeeze ur break to fullest or do not let the breaks go free coz you cannot avoid the pothole.

If you cannot avoid, but want to slow down the fastest way then use combined breaking(60% front, 40% rear) and as you stroll nearer to the pothole shift the breaking from 60/40 to 40front n 60rear so that ur front wont suddenly skid or go bam in the pot due to over pressurised forks!

Finally the swiftness of your brain plus ur limbs plus ur senses plus your eyes in reacting on the situation before it goes out of control is very important!!

You could have started an entire thread on this!
I would like to add: If you are at a speed which you know that you cannot reduce considerably before entering the pothole/crater, best is to hold the handle firmly&get your butt a bit above the seat by standing up on the footpegs. This reduces the weight on the forks&alloys by a very large amount, which you can imagine according to how much your body weight is. Again, by no means use brakes just before entering&inside the pothole. You don't wanna somersault!
Btw, girls on the road are more dangerous than potholes. A lot of posts are related to this on the Biking Bloopers thread. I was happy for once that my girl's weight sitting on my bike managed to help keep the bike straight&we came out of a big crater unscathed at around 90kmph albeit with a bent fork.

Enough of OTs. The real point is the R15's alloys are as strong or as weak as any other Indian bikes are.
    Quench my thirst with gasoline!

    • I have done handful of no roads and a lot of patchy & pot-holed roads on my R15 at decent speeds. Cannot even count the number of times I have hit a non-standard speed breaker or a pot hole at speeds above 90 or 100 KMPH. Some hits were very bad. But nothing happened to the alloys. Only once when I hit a pothole at about 95 KMPH my alloy got slightly bent and about 350 KMs after that a crack appeared and air started leaking. That pothole was right after a speed breaker and the farther edge was higher than the nearer edge.

They alloys aren't as bad as they are said to be. Every kind of alloy can get bent if it is a bad day for you. Ride a little careful.

Also, air pressure on small tubeless tyres is an issue (again, not very bad). Have to check the pressure regularly.

I do the same and it worked pretty well. Also, let me tell you, for road use, the tyres on the R15 have a lot of grip. Even with tyre pressure at 40+ psi it doesn't give a hint of uneasiness on various types of roads and even at speeds like 100 KM's in 60 mins with heavy winds.

      • Beauty of the Beast

Hey guys.. Just bought by first bike!

        A black R15.

I was in phases of decision wherein i decided on an FZ16, P180, P200, P220 at different points in time. Then one fine day god said to me "Ass! Here is an R15. Ride it."

I did. And now I own one because of that.

I know it sounds pompous but the moment i sat on my friends R15, I knew i will be owning one someday.

It does handle as if on rails. At any earthly speed a mortal desires on indian "autobahns". And since its rev-hungry, the banshee howl scream is just amazing. addictive. dangerous. downright killer.

I don't know about others but a bike like this is a dream come true for someone like me. Cheers to yamaha for it.

I want some mods.. but i want to tame this beast well before i get some. first deserve then desire :P

PS: This place is a goldmine of knowledge and passion. Cheers guys. Double cheers to gals if any.

          On a lighter note!

I wonder... does god say the above to all, who decides to buy R15 amongst so many choices.

          Congrats for your new ride!!!!

                  • about rims,
If the alloys of r15 is really as strong as you guys say it is, why is it that the most number of cases of bent/broken rims i have seen is of r15's than any bike?

Let me answer that.... I have also been one of the unfortunate ones with a slightly bent alloy!

I got my R15 on Valentines day, no it wasnt my girl friends gift ...
I 'ride' my bike a lot... and by ride, I mean real life conditions... fkd up roads and everything! When I got my R15 I was super paranoid about the alloys, courtesy xBHP....

After clocking about 20K kms since then and have had a slight bent alloy, I can safely conclude that the R15 alloys are as tough as any other.... the place where they make a difference is that they are hell lighter!!!!

How I got my bent alloy:
I have a habit of always checking my air pressure every alternate day... I missed out on a long week courtesy the rains... and the pressure should be about 25 at rear.... I had to carry a pillion and when I took a corner I had a small bump @ a pothole which caused a small bent in the alloy (fixed by hammering )

I agree with the rest of the part... But just going over a pot hole with pillion shouldn bend the rim. For ex, i weigh 86.4kgs and many times i have one of my friend as pillion to college and he weighs a 108kgs ! Total 195kgs+150kgs of bike! And the road to college is famous for the insane number of stupid speedbreaks.. I sometimes literally jump of the speedbumps.. Till now not even a slightest of bend.. Do you honestly feel that r15 rims can withstand 345kgs of load and literally jump over thin and high speed breakers and speeds of 70+? I own p220.. And i dont even check the air pressure of my bike even once a month!
And i have seen more number of rims bends in r15 than any other (im not lying)

Bout the bent alloys, conditions makes em bent!
As you know Being ultra heavy weight and ultra durable dosnt matters but being ultra light and ultra durable does matters!!

You have carefully ignored one very important word, .... I was cornering....
PS: Am probably as bulky as you, but yes I didnt have 1 100+ KG pillion... he should be at best another 75 Odd KGs..
Taking a pothole with low air pressure and with a lean is a sure shot invitation to trouble.

PS and am sure you will (atleast from now, if not already) see a lot more people riding FZ with low air pressure too...

The difference is probably the tyres....
for R15- People just tend to notice due to the smaller dimension
for FZ- People tend to ignore due to the wide base but ignore the smaller profile!

The problem is that eeny weeny tyre that people tend to ignore...

Also the biggest problem is the non complaining nature of R15... i mean even if the pressure is tad bit low, it wont be very evident... it will still handle well...so easy for a lot of people to forget about the basic pre check for a ride! Which is why you would also see worn out front \rear disc plates and what not at the SVC!!!

Not just that bro, it pulls us from as low as 2k rpm in top gear all the way. I have even managed to touch 125+ with such conditions! Even i was suprised!

Ok agreed on that low tire pressure part.. But my question is , why should the tire loose pressure so quickly? I mean checking once a month should be more
Than enough.. Once i had filled nitrogen in my tires and dint check for two months, when checked again, it had reduced to 27 from 30 thats all..
