    • Buying used Pulsar 150

      Hello everyone....

      I intend to buy a used Pulsar 150....(ride it for a year or so and then go for a bigger bike....can't help it after the news of all the big launches coming up....).....budget is up to 33-35K,
      I wanted to know any particualr points/issues abt old pulsars that I should know/check......like regular components to be changed etc....
      also I have heard that Pulsars are not as well built as Honda/hero Honda and thus would require more maintainence...what is your opinion regarding this?....is this true....
      Also it would be great if someone can help me with std. prices of P150 according to the model year....

      Thanks...

        Well..thats a good idea. I am guessing that this is going to be your 1st bike.
        Well...when buying a 2nd hand bike there are 2 things to look out for,
        1. Documents - make sure the previous owner hands to u all the relevant documents regarding the bike.
        2. Bike- check if its in good condition. Give it a test drive. Check if the owner has done regular servicing. Ask him about the accident history for that bike. See if there are any loose components. And as for the regular components replaced - check for filters, oil, Spark plugs.
        Avoid modified bikes. U can never be sure of the components modded.
        And if possible request the owner for a service before exchanging hands.

        There is some arguments over old pulsars having maintenance issues but that depends on how the owner has used it from the start. The bike's life is dependent over the long term use.

        And as for new bikes,
        A pulsar 150 UG4 - 64k
        Pulsar 180 UG4 - 67k
        Pulsar 220 DTSi - 79k
        Pulsar 220S - 75k (not sure about this one!)

        All the best for your bike.

              interval 4500 kms .... this is news man ... the oil they use is good only for a good 800-1000km
              ive heard about that oil ... but for P150 too or is it for every pulsar.
              do you know the price of the oil ??

              • Whatever, that oil is sure to be crap! 4.5k kms for a service seems a bit too much , in league of car service intervals!

                And yes, as usual, Bajaj service sucks. If everything is alright, and if just a routine service is needed, they would screw up something extra and deliver the bike to you

                • pulsar 150 ug 4.5 problem

                  I bought a pulsar 150 ug 4.5 (plasma blue), a week ago and I've covered about 200kms till now.

                  The on-road price was Rs 68,680.

                  Overall I feel that the pulsar 150 is a great VFM except for a few glitches.

                  A few problems which I found on my new bike are:

                  1. Rear brake is too weak. Always need to rely on the front disc. SVC guys failed to retify it and reported it as normal.

                  2. Suspension is quite stiff. It aids to the overall handling but certainly decrements the overall riding comfort. SVC guy told me that if I switch
                  to a softer setting, the rear mudguard may get damaged.

                  3. Varying idling rpm.: On the first day, idling rpm was 950-1k. But now after a week, it has increased to about 2k. Experts please throw some light on this.

                  4. Engine Heating: After about riding for 10 kms, I can actually feel the heat generated between my feet.
                  2000 - 2010 : HH Splendor (still owned)

                  • Rear brake is too weak :
                    Wrong ! Check the brake adjustment.

                    Suspension is quite stiff:
                    Pulsar is having one of the best soft suspensions. Adjust it to softer setting.

                      Congrats for ur new purchase it is sure VFM

                      Rear brake is too weak.
                      Ask service guy(even ur local mech will do n he will hardly charge u 10 bucks) to fix it as ur requirement as it depends from biker to biker and don't leave him until u r satisfied.

                      Apply both rear and front break for optimum performance 60:40.

                      Suspension is quite stiff.
                      u urself has answered that

                      3. Varying idling rpm.: On the first day, idling rpm was 950-1k. But now after a week, it has increased to about 2k. Experts please throw some light on this.

                      Well ur local mech or service center guy will help u out in this for the first time normal rpm should be just a shade above 1k.

                      Or even u can do it on ur own just beside the petrol reserve lever there is a start shaped screw, just screw or unscrew it for more or less rpm(or vice versa)...note after starting ur bike do this do not keep it below 1000 rpm bcoz then the engine will switch off on its own if u haven't kept ur hand on acccl

                      4. Engine Heating: After about riding for 10 kms, I can actually feel the heat generated between my feet.

                      It only happens if u accelerate very hard and continously...

                      happy ridding buddy..

                      • Pulsar 150 DTS-i 2004

                        I've taken great pains in order to make sure that the bike ran-in very well and all necessary maintenance was followed to the book during the early months. All my effort did not go in vain. My bike is still a great ride even after clocking some 42000 Km.

                        I agree that it's not the best bike even in India , but what you look for in a bike guides you to the decision.

                        During these 6 good years I've had a few recurrent problems but nothing too bad. Maybe my initial rigorous maintenance is to credit. However, I don't not agree with most of the posts that claim that Pulsars are generally unreliable. At least that's not the case with my ride. I replaced my Chain, Sprockets and Battery by 30,000 Km. No other major replacement (Not considering the tires).

                        I have to admit that I faced a few small unimportant but irritating snags all along. So here they are:

                        * The side-stand indicator failed when the bike was a couple months, had it replaced thrice and it just darn kept failing.

                        * Transmission gets notoriously rough with constant thrashing of city riding .

                        * Handling is a stone-age affair by today's standards.

                        * Brakes are adequate but lack the seriously safe feel. Likely to do with the forward weight bias of the chassis and engine placement design.

                        * Lights are a joke in this model. You're better of using a damn flashlight strapped to your handlebars. Seriously limits evening touring speeds on twisty state highways.

                        That's it... I mean these are pretty big trade-offs for today's bike buyer but back in 04, these were hardly any concerns. Besides what alternative did we have, the seriously gawky Fieros or the insanely pocket burdening CBZs... This bike wins the contest hands down back then. Yep, it's an all-rounder, a good one at that.

                        Now I've come to see some really strong points of owning this bike properly...:

                        * RELIABLE

                        * Low on maintenance. In fact some hard acceleration and highway pounding at full throttle just blew the inner tube of the exhaust two years ago. Had it replaced under warranty . Seeeeee... maintenance pays dividends.

                        * Great ride feel.

                        * A very very very REV HAPPY engine.... 'The more you wring the sweeter it sings.'

                        * Very consistent mileage. 50-55 kmpl.

                        * Affordable spare costs.

                        * Acceptable corner carving capabilities.

                        * Decent appeal and status presence. Nowadays they're too common and the appeals if very rapidly fading into absence.

                        I like this bike and will continue to use it.... I may get a better more powerful, snazzy bike, but this loyal steed of mine will always stay

                          Its a design flaw. Its modified in UGII and later models

                          * Transmission gets notoriously rough with constant thrashing of city riding .

                          Try Valvoline if you have not. Castrol is the worst for this bike.

                          * Handling is a stone-age affair by today's standards.

                          Yeah, it feels the best at 30-80kmph. Less that that, the bike feels top heavy, more than that it feels like a missile. Handling is a gone case if riding 2 up.

                          * Brakes are adequate but lack the seriously safe feel. Likely to do with the forward weight bias of the chassis and engine placement design.

                          Less feedback compared to some newer models. Bite is very good though.

                          * Lights are a joke in this model. You're better of using a damn flashlight strapped to your handlebars. Seriously limits evening touring speeds on twisty state highways.

                          If you are up to it, change the reflector. It makes a difference

                              You can try Motul oil 3 options Mineral, Semi-Synthetic and Synthetic. IF you ride normal smoothly then go for either mineral or semi-synthetic. Synthetic is expensive.

                              For tyres you can go for Tubeless. I too have P150 and last week only i changed my bike tyres from tube type to tubeless. no problems at all. Front 90/90 17" & Rear 120/80 17".
