above message has a warning sign attached to it: this is based on personal experience and collective experience of other P150 riders. take it or leave it. there are happy P150 riders at 2.5 turns too and there are others like me who are at 6.5 turns.

earlier my pulsar also used to run at company settings untill all of a sudden it started to heat too much with a burning smell. i tried everything but in the end had to increase this setting to get it right. similar things have happened with other riders too.

just one suggestion- while doing all this, keep an eye for fuel consumption.
I will try making it richer bro, worried about the fuel efficiency though.

Thanks for your help, prabhakar and rpmboy my problem is fixed .. i did exactly as you said I rode my bike for sometime and then found out the idling screw and turned it, Now my idling rpm is 1500 and my bike does not stop anymore when i let go my throttle...

But I ****ed my bikes engine real badly, my bike is nine months old and I take my bike to office everyday, I ride about 60kms daily... I changed the engine oil first at 1500kms reading.... the next oil change I did was at 5000kms .... I usally rode my bike at 110kms to office since i ride on the Chennai bypass road which is highway...and once day when i rode above 110kms/hr my engine was like out of breath and started to slow down suddenly.. i pulled over gave it a rest and started again and it started, but the engine sound was completely different it became more rough.... then I took it to my mechanic who told me I have busted my piston rings or the pistons themselves and the engine oil will get evaporated very quick...

now wat happens is I have to change engine oil every 500kms since it get depleted very quick... the reason is the piston collides or has contact with the bore and results in lot of friction which causes heat and the heat burns up my engine oil..... my mechanic suggested the only solution to this is to change the piston and bore ....and it would cost me around 8k for that seems...

Guys should i take it to bajaj service center to fix the engine...? or should i leave it to my mechanic.. my mechanic is experienced with pulsars and apaches... im confused now ... I dont know wat to do.. my pulsar is out of warranty too since i did not use the free service..im ****ed
I don't have first hand experience with these problems bro. But riding at 110kph is bit too much for a basic 150cc. Don't do overspeeds , not safe for you and your bike.

To take the bike to an max out , there is a revved way to do that...where u need to understand the limits also . The indicative speed of 110kmph is hard on latest Pulsar150 as the machine is made more for mid end performance , but still you should not go to that speed every now a then . Stay away from that top speed as long as you can .

Also find any kind of smoke coming out from the silencer which means the engine oil is getting mixed in combustion chamber . But as you said an 9 month old machine thats comes to 13000+ kms approx , (60kms * 24days * 9months) , quite early for head-kit to change but yes a lot depends on riding conditions on the bike engine .

So , if you can detect white-smoke which is stable coming out with respect to rpm of engine for example as revs are increased the smoke will also increase like mosquito killing device bu Municipal Corp . , ask the mechanic to open head , see for wear & tear on piston head ,

If no scratches , on head , I think only a rings be changed until next problem arrives for full conversion i.e Piston-kit set . What ever you do keep patience to complete minimum run-in kms for your benefit of your bike's engine .

thanks for the reply rpmboy, i put on my bike on neutral and revved it to 7k and found black smoke coming out of the silencer .... wat do you think might have happened ?.....wat do you suggest me to do bro..???

Thanks in advance for your reply...

          Small update on my problem..

I changed the bikes engine oil to castrol 4T semi-synthetic engine oil... I have been making some long rides and I made sure not to exceed 7k rpm.... now the past 1 week the engine oil level is constant its not getting depleted..

I know that there is something wrong with my pistons and I have to change them one day.. but as of now as long as i dont cross 7k rpm my engine oil level stays good..

If Black smoke is coming that means Carb is not set . The sign of warning will be white smokes while revving hard . No wonder , I hate Castrol for some really good reasons , I think Motul in 15W40 or Servo in 20W40 is just fine for our Pulsars .

Tell me one thing , have the CV Carb opened any time in past ?

            • black smoke and poor acceleration from pulsar 150 dtsi 2004

the bike shoots black smoke in high rpm and low pick up.. the bike dose'nt pull.. if i have a pillion behind me, the the acceleration becomes really less. but fuel economy in ok. i'm getting 45-48km/l. when i accelerate it makes a wierd sound, as if i have installed k&n airfilter, but i have'nt. the sound is not prominent, but i can hear it with my helmet on.

I think u should go for a carb overhaul first . Ask mechanic to do a carb wash with petrol and to check all the pins/nozzles , float in the carb .

The approx price of Carb will be Rs.2200 appx .

                      • Mileage update:

I have a 2004 P150 Dtsi which has done 58945kms till today. i just checked my bike mileage today. from reserve position i fill 200rs petrol which comes to 2.8 lts in Mumbai.
Today when it came back to reserve i had completed 150kms in 2.8lts which comes to 53.5 kmpl. I am very happy with the performance as i never thought i would get this mileage, was expecting 45-48 as my bike it old and i have done engine mods also.
Like KnN filter with jet modification and also done Head porting to adjust with more flow from the filter as i was not getting perfect setting with Jet.

bro i got same problem as one of the members here... rev hard and i get black smoke with low pickup....bro so you recommend the carb overhaul?? wat is a carb overhal?

Hey thanks. Between 1 tip for tuning which i have done. If you have not done any mods on you bike try this.
When your bike is warm after your ride, set the RPM screw to 3000RPM, then close the ARF screw fully on the carb, i think that is clockwise, then after that just turn the screw to open the fuel by 3-4 turns, just check if the RPM is stable, max turn up to 5 turns depending on the RPM stability. Once stable, set the RPM screw back to 1.4 - 1.5 RPM Needle. You should get better mileage by this setting.
To check after doing the setting try to pull the bike hard, if it is linear petrol flow then you are done, if there is little check on petrol flow, like while pulling if you feel less fuel to the carb then you need to increase the fuel a bit again.
This is a trail and error method, but i got it in one setting itself, so you can try it.
                              Best of luck.

                              • Ok here is my update,

I checked my bike with two mechanics , in which one of them refused to take it as a problem at all. He tried to convince me saying that overheating is common with all pulsars. I was not satisfied as I know how cool( or hot ) my bike was running 10 days back and this is not something normal. I had a strong feeling that I would burst the piston someday with the kind of heat and smell it generates. So went to another workshop.

The other one was better as he checked free rotation of both the wheels and ridden it to see what happened. According to him the timing chain needs to be adjusted to reduce the heat. I even told him about the color of spark plugs and tomorrow I am taking my bike to him to get it adjusted.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this? Does the timing chain causes the engine to run hot or lean?
