      If adjusting tappets dont solve clatter, then its either a worn cam or worn rocker arms.

        As far as I understand , this alters the firing timing of the engine's CDI ignition system . There is this small permanent magnet affixed to the magneto rotor and a pickup coil is affixed next to the rotor . Everytime this magnet passes the pickup coil ( as the rotor spins ) .. it generates a small current in the pickup coil by electromagnetic induction . The pickup coil is connected to the CDI which senses this small current and fires the plug . So by setting the magneto rotor's position ( alignment of the line adjacent to T with the line on the engine case ) the CDI's plug firing timing is altered . By altering this you are varying the factory recomended (and set) timing a little bit - either advancing or retarding it (not sure - gotta ask others) . The factory setting is to fire the plug as near to the TDC of the compression stroke as they could adjust (i.e at maximum compression of the mixture) . This has nothing to do with tappet clearances - when the plug fires near the maximum compression of mixture (and piston at/nearest TDC) - both the valves are fully shut (closed) .
        It was a well known fact that under conditions that are not ideal (adultrated or low octane fuel for example) ... varying the timing can compensate and increase performance . Timing was a vital adjustment(left to expert mechanics) when we were still using the "points" (contact breaker) ignitions on bullets . Nowadays , with CDI and later ignitions , we don't even bother about ignition and timing .
        Anyway , I completely believe that what you felt after that change, was real and reasonable .

        Yeah , right ... then it's minor tappet noise indeed . Nothing to worry about . Really serious tappet noise is loud hammering - something other bikers will also notice .
        I still don't understand how does the timing change if one adjusts the tappet at other than TDC ? AFAIK, timing can be altered only when the timing sprocket is set other than TDC of compression stroke. But Sarbanoxely did not even touch the timing chain or sprocket.

        Tappets can be adjusted when the tappet is free ie. when the cam lobe is not pushing the rocker arm.

        • I am replying after 7 days as i didn't have access to net. I was browsing through my phone but was not able to reply because of this upgrade as my phone doesn't support replying after upgrade.
          Regarding tappet adjustment let me tell you you cannot and most importantly never can change the timing of a bike. By adjusting the tappets you can change the valve overlap by a few minutes only.
          Take this:-
          Inlet valve is adjusted at 0.08 mm that means the cam shaft has to travel to eat into 0.08 mm lift and then valve will lift.
          Exhaust valve is adjusted at 0.12 mm that means the cam shaft has to travel to eat into 0.12 mm lift and then valve will lift.
          So by altering the valve clearance you can change the cam shaft overlap by few minutes and not degrees. But you cannot deduce much change in performance. Regarding those difference in performance on different days bike feels different.
          Manufacturers determine valve clearance keeping valve overlap on mind. So we think only about tappet noise while adjusting but manufacturers use valve overlap while determining tappet clearance.

          @ashish- I think something is wrong because on my stock sprocket in my CBZ the speed is not as mentioned.
          In stock sprockets the speed is
          @5k rpm in fifth gear speed is 65 kph and at 6k rpm in fifth gear speed is 78 kph.
          In unicorn sprockets :-
          @5k rpm in fifth gear speed is 70 kph and at 6k rpm speed is 85 kph.

          Drive chain never looses tension may be some bikes have some problem. Show it to some good mechanics.

            • Once again confirm your speed at various rpm and then post. Ensure front tyre psi is 29 and rear tyre is 35, this is what i maintain. Since now i not in bhubaneswar, i will return on 25th night and i will be in bhubaneswar on saturday and sunday. You can call me, i am Pm you my number. Call me before 9:30 am or after 5:30 pm. Confirm with another hunk and then report.

                  • @sibun, I tested with another Hunk which had clocked 32000 kms. This bike had great pickup than mine and easily climbs the RPM meter. One outright difference was the engine DIDN'T felt STRAINED at ALL @ 75 Kmph and mine with new & bigger front sprocket feels a bit strain @ 60 Kmph. Since that bike's owner had already met with 2 accident , the handling was letdown and didn't inspire confidence else I would've tested the top speed too. Then, I took my bike and checked the free play of both wheels and its good. I've already discussed it in Service Center but they avoid it by saying that your engine is good, nothing wrong's with it after riding hardly 1km @ 40 Kmph speed . He has also checked the Spark plug to see whether its running Lean, and he said it's ok. I've already clocked 8200 Kms and have ridden above 90 Kmph for 50 Kms, still it feels like engine is underpowered and doesn't like to be ridden in speed.

                    These are my observations noticed in 15 min ride of old Hunk ( same model & same generation & same color )

                    Old Hunk
                    ~~~~~~
                    4k RPM - 50 Kmph
                    4.5k RPM - 55 Kmph
                    5k RPM - 62 Kmph
                    6k RPM - 75 Kmph
                    My Hunk with Unicorn front sprocket
                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                    4k RPM - 55 Kmph
                    4.5K RPM - 60 Kmph
                    5K RPM - 65 Kmph
                    6K RPM - 80 Kmph

                    Other than this speed and engine strain issue, I have absolutely no complains. The bike handles great, brake has enough power and even while the rear wheel gets locked in event of hard breaking, i never felt lost of control. Thanks to its handling, else I'd have faced 2 accidents till now.

                        Sorry for my vague statement bro. with "nothing happened" I mean no performance gain was noticed, when I adjusted tappets keeping the index mark aligned with "T". Anyways thanks for the info.

                          Your bike feels less pickup and strained because by changing front to 15 teeth you have increased your top-end speed with some compromise with the low end torque. Since you are riding in the street its not good to change the front sprocket by 1 teeth because 1 teeth of front sprocket is equal to the 3 teeth of the rear sprocket. You'll notice great change when u alter the front sprocket but not with the rear sprocket by 1 teeth.
                          In your case, your gear have become taller, therefore decreased in acceleration, so u are ripping it off to get the desire speed.
                          Change it to the stock front sprocket i.e.,14 teeth and then u'll notice that your acceleration is same or may be more than that old hunk.
                          It depends on what u want. If u want better acceleration, u would go for 44 teeth in place of 43. Will increase your bike pulling power, but will reduce mileage and top end speed.

                          If u want more top speed, u would go for 42 or 41 teeth rear for better results (41 comes in some TVS bikes and in Honda shine). It will not much noticeable in 42. This will slightly reduce your pickup but will give u better mileage and more top-end speed which is also best for highway riding. Also your bike will less vibrate and smooth because u were giving less throttle to get to the same speed, but it will vibrate more when u'll give the full throttle.
                          42 teeth rear will increase top by 1.7 kph & 41 teeth by 3.5-4 kph.

                          • Yes, engine and technology is still from Honda. Hero is allowed to use their engines up until 2014. Read this article for more info:
                            Hero, Honda sign new licensing pact till 2014 - Economic Times
                            I don't think they'll drop the Xtreme, Karizma, Splendor etc. They will mostly use engine's other than Honda's. They may relaunch all of them with more modern engines. Maybe include 4 valve on all of them, DOHC for the Karizma and the like perhaps.[/QUOTE]

                            Hi,

                            I am going to book Xtreme this weekend and while going through the thread I came across the above information.
                            Now I am confused whether to go for it as there can be demand of the spares after 2014 or required parts may not be available in the market for Xtreme anymore.

                            My friends are struggling to get the parts for their RX.. I dont want to face the same fate buying Xtreme.

                            Please throw some light on this.. it would be a great help.

                              RX was stopped in late 90s whereas the RX-G continued till early 2000's and people still manage to get spares, albeit with hefty struggle. Rest assured, you'll have no problems of spares getting completely depleted for at least 5-6 years.

                                I believe Spares will not be an issue even after 10 years, Cuz I still have Hero CD100 bike for past 22 years and the parts are available in most spares shop.
