What I understood from my experiences is that they encounter lot of bikes everyday. When you narrate your problems of your bike, it is being cascaded from service advisor who narrates his version of problem to workshop supervisor who in turn instructs his team who actually touch the bike and get down to work. Everybody in this chain have their own experiences, ego and solutions. So unless you speak to down the line guy it is impossible to get special attention. Of course they have a job sheet tied to every bike but....... This is one big advantage you have with reputed local mechanics with whom you can argue, demand and witness the job done. You will need necessary tools to clean carb yourself. There are lot of tutorials in this forum. I am not convinced with the carb cleaning interval of once in 15000kms. Even if one rides the bike for 40kms per day it is like cleaning carb only once in a year??? I dont think the quality of fuel is so good even if you pay the premium. I suggest you refer your last few pages of maintenance schedule in your owners manual. Moreover it is the owner's choice of maintenance. I clean the carb atleast once in every 2oil changes, that would be'around once every 4000kms or once every 3months. I never allow my bikes to reach its threshold. Most importantly do not touch the AFR settings if you have power and mileage in order.Keep us posted!
Well your bike so your call.. you may clean the carb every 500 kms or 2k kms it is upto you. If carburettors were so difficult to maintain then believe me Yamaha would have specifically mentioned about the same. My experience of 29,500 kms+ with my FZ tells me that 10-15k periodic preventive maintenance is good enough. It is like the theory of replacing your engine oil under 1000 kms whether it is Rs. 1000/- bucks Motul 300V FS oil or mineral oil. Logically it makes sense to replace and put fresh oil but then again you are wasting tons of money for no reason without reaching the drain interval of such a high end engine oil. Hope you get the picture!

Looks like a simple job to me.. I am very wary of local mechanics so even if it is headache i would recommend going to the SVC. atleast you can always threaten them with shooting a mail to yamaha back office. Most of the time it works

These idiots check the bikes throttle response by almost red lining it , the only thing they can say is "arey itni achi to chal rahi hai bike, aisa thoda to hoga hi"

Cheerz!!
There is an american saying, "if it ain't broke don't fix it!!" Regardless, if you want to be sure about your engine receiving the correct dose of fuelling, you can attempt the plug chop test. This thread should give you somewhat an idea of what a plug chop test is: Tuning Carbs by Reading Spark Plugs/Throttle Chop

Do the plug chop tests keeping the engine @ 3 gear and maintaining a consistent rpm at different ranges and using the engine kill switch with the clutch dipped coaster it to stop. Check the spark plug readings. If the colour of the plug is dark brown, golden brown or else chocolate brown then the AFR is ideal and the burn happening inside the engine is stoich.

Plug chop test is the most ideal way to know whether the engine is running lean or rich.

I personally never run my bike on reserve unlike popularly followed by a lot of riders here. It has served me well and there are no visible rust or corrosion inside the tank. Now in souped up form also i have had no issues with my ride besides the details mentioned on the FZ 18 thread.

Carburator is not something which you open everytime you take the bike for service..
Until its not giving you any problems, then why to disturb and create problems for ourselves..
Normally then carb settings for most bikes are at optimal position.. And in the process of cleaning/opening, most mech don't bother to make the settings back to the original position.. No body takes this much care for others bike..
So like shv18 said, don't play with things that are not giving you trouble..
And in case of later, get it checked at the svc in front of you or by a trusted mech..

Ride safe and have fun.

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.

• Fz 16 - Owned.

Hello Xbhpns ,
After a lot of thought I have finally bought an Fz16 today

I'm new to biking and all so I want help from you experienced riders who own an Fz.
Please let me know if there are any do's and donts about the bike.

Things like what should I do to get more mileage out of the bike as well as a longer engine life. Because I understand the engine life depends on how you drive It in the 1st 1000 odd Kms. ?

Also I'm a little worried. Today when I drove it home. In my Parking lot I could smell something from my engine compartment. I mean like burning or something. It feels normal coz its a new bike and engine hasn't quite run.

However if you guys think its something I should be worried about please let me know.

Also do give me some tips about riding and maintaining my bike properly.

Thanks and regards.
Deep..!

First of all congratz for the bike
coming to your queries.. Just do the run-in properly.. i.e. ride under 4500rpm till 1st service and then till 6000rpm till 1000kms.. Do read the last 15-20 pages of this thread.. It has been explained in detail..
as for the smell that you are talking about.. Its nothing to be worried about.. As the bike is new and the whole components of engine are new and they need time in adjusting.. This is normal in case of new rides.. So need not worry..

well do keep the bike clean and do proper run-in and timely services.. And don't ride in reserve for long, fill up regularly.. It should not give you much trouble..
also buy good helmet and gloves..
ride safe and have fun..

And yes. Ill make sure the bike is run in about 4500rpm.

had to ride my bike very hard continuously for about 5-6 kms (at 90-100 km/h)
during that time, when i used to leave the throttle even for a bit, and then again twist the throttle, the engine would feel like dying and loos a lot for power and then after a few seconds, got back roaring..
this happened many time during the ride..
don't know why can anyone tell the reason behind it..
had serviced my bike last week only..

This happens with any automobile out in this world. Once the throttle is left and since it is in gear, the gear will try to reduce the speed once you leave the throttle.

A simple eg. is, when you are rolling down a slope, roll down in neutral gear and roll down with bike in gear. You will notice considerable difference and this is what exactly happens when you throttle and leave the throttle when in gear.

Cheerz!!
The real beauty lies in throttle's twist!!

Headlight can be replaced, Head cannot be. Wear a helmet.

what i really meant was that after leaving the throttle, when i again twisted it, at that time the bike would loose power..
