Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Hi guys! I have bought a fz-s(orange-black) just last week and am currently loving it !
But I have a couple of queries, which are currently bothering me:
1. The engine becomes very hot even if the travel is just for 1-2 kms, is it normal ?
2. I'm hearing a sound like a water droplets ("tick tick"), again from the engine. I can hear it when I turn off the bike and I hear it for about 5 min. I hear it even while the bike is running when the surroundings is quiet and with less throttle.
3. I dropped the bike on its right side, ever so slowly n slightly. When I pull the handbar to the right side, I hear a slight quaking sound (like the ones we will hear when we open a old car door
). I dont hear it in the left side. Is this a problem? If I ask the SVC guys to correct this on my 1st service, will they charge me more?
4. This is my 1st ever bike and I totally dont know how to maintain a bike. I intend to wash it once a week. What shall I use to wash the bike? And is cleaning and lubing the chain necessary? If yes, how to do it as well!
And for people in Chennai, is the Raj Yamaha SVC in Canal Bank road good? That's the SVC which is somewhat nearer to me! What's the cost for the 1st free service? If I report the above problems, will they charge me more to fix it or will it be free?
Guys, this is my first ever bike and I'm a complete noob in regards to bikes, so please do help me !

since it is a new bike, slightly more heating is normal.. if the heating is not normal and is way more, then go to svc.. but they will also say the say thing..
2. I'm hearing a sound like a water droplets ("tick tick"), again from the engine. I can hear it when I turn off the bike and I hear it for about 5 min. I hear it even while the bike is running when the surroundings is quiet and with less throttle.
this is normal.. happens with most bike.. when the bike is switched off after riding.. but i don't think it should come while the bike is running..
3. I dropped the bike on its right side, ever so slowly n slightly. When I pull the handbar to the right side, I hear a slight quaking sound (like the ones we will hear when we open a old car door

can't say about the sound.. and they won't charge anything.. tell they each and ever problem at the time of servicing..
4. This is my 1st ever bike and I totally dont know how to maintain a bike. I intend to wash it once a week. What shall I use to wash the bike? And is cleaning and lubing the chain necessary? If yes, how to do it as well.
you can use car wash shampoo to wash.. and lubing is to be don't after 500-600 kms.. it would be good for the engine and will make the change last more..
And for people in Chennai, is the Raj Yamaha SVC in Canal Bank road good? That's the SVC which is somewhat nearer to me! What's the cost for the 1st free service? If I report the above problems, will they charge me more to fix it or will it be free?
upon servicing, tell them all your problems.. they have to check everything and it won't be charged.. this is what servicing is for..
the cost is something 450-500rs in total and would include engine oil.. oil filter and chain lube..
Guys, this is my first ever bike and I'm a complete noob in regards to bikes, so please do help me !
Ride safe and have fun.

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
In reality, people use different terms for mechanical parts. Example: While we term the brass screw in carb as AFR screw, few mechanics call it mileage screw. While we call it idle balancer gear mechanics call it vibration gear or even scissor gear. The point is we really do not know what the mechanic meant by saying fork set. It is highly unlikely that he replaced the fork set for 450/-. I guess he just replaced fork oil seals. It is a procedure to replace seals on both forks along with fork oil. The seals and oil are quite inexpensive. It is labor that is on higher end.Originally posted by chaosaddict View PostI guess so, what do you think? They told me that they have changed the fork (no set, cone type terms used).
And I am looking for descriptions myself. All they(SVC) showed me were smallest/tiniest(maybe significant) of nuts & bolts replacement.
I am a complete noob and taking things steadily, thanks for the help.
@petrolhead_chn - any clues about what I am talking about.
Would you be able to post a picture of the replaced part he showed + the invoice? My DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial

Sorry guys for not being able to post pics despite continuous requests. I do not have a cam (yea, I know that everyone has a smart phone nowadays but I am still using a samsung champ
)
Anyways, I'll write down the Invoice particulars for your ref. :
4T oil SLSEMI BLACK - 441/-
Cylinder Kit master - 152/-
Gasket - 1.26/-
Servicing 150CC - 495/-
Fork O/H - 450/-
Disk Brake O/H - 250/-
Clutch O/H - 350/-
Wheel Truing front & back - 200/-
Swingarm greasing - 350/-
Chain cleaning & lubrication - 180/-
Total - 2870/- + tax = 3238/- INR
Please educate me on these, of course I understood - oil, service, lube and wheel truing. Like I mentioned before, the mechanic did show me small replacements to justify the cost incurred. I couldn't take a closer look as I was running outta time and the SVC rush in the evening hours was testing my patience.
Also what's O/H?? - overhead or overhaul or something else
(le me Sick Noob)

Cylinder Kit master - 152/- (Front disc)
Gasket - 1.26/- (possibly for clutch cover)
Servicing 150CC - 495/- (paid service labor charges)
Fork O/H - 450/- (Fork overhaul; includes the spares like seals and oil and labor)
Disk Brake O/H - 250/- (probably labor charge for front disc servicing)
Clutch O/H - 350/- (clutch replacement, all or maybe just one or two plates + labor)
Swingarm greasing - 350/- (I don't think this was necessary at all)
Chain cleaning & lubrication - 180/- (Whoa!!! Is your chain clean and shiny now?)
Total - 2870/- + tax = 3238/- INR

I suppose the mechanic showed you the replaced master cylinder kit.My DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial

thanks for the quick one, bro!Originally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostThat seems a hefty bill mate. Comments in bold above.
I suppose the mechanic showed you the replaced master cylinder kit.
He did point at the brake fluid chamber and the knob and connections but there weren't any shiny and new parts. Is it supposed to be inside?? (I am scared now!!!)
If the seal and oil was changed for the forks then why is it showing heavy leakage now, on right one?- the disk assembly & plate is all greasy and black due to this leakage. I have clocked around 4.5K kms since..
CHAIN!!! don't even ask. I am gonna have to replace it soon - overlapping links and hence slow & fast movement at alternate rotations. Clocked only ~10K kms since last change, 'guess monsoon took a toll.BENEATH THE REMAINS.........

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
The cylinder kit is just beside the lever within the boot. This part creates pressure inside the reservoir forcing the fluid down.Originally posted by chaosaddict View Postthanks for the quick one, bro!

I guess they did not change it then. Or maybe they removed a bend in the fork or just greased the cone set.Originally posted by chaosaddict View PostIf the seal and oil was changed for the forks then why is it showing heavy leakage now, on right one?-
This is very common in open chain system.Originally posted by chaosaddict View PostCHAIN!!! don't even ask. I am gonna have to replace it soon - overlapping links and hence slow & fast movement at alternate rotations. Clocked only ~10K kms since last change, 'guess monsoon took a toll.
You now need to focus on the leakage around shockers. Take it back and get it done.
I am most certain that they either greased the cone set or replaced it instead of replacing the fork oil and seals. My DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
So it is inside, right?; nothing shiny & new literally visible to the naked eye!! I guess he showed me that part but it didn't look new. Please clarify.Originally posted by petrolhead_chn View PostThe cylinder kit is just beside the lever within the boot. This part creates pressure inside the reservoir forcing the fluid down.
Rest is making a lot of sense now!! I will work on it ASAP.

Nothing visible to the naked eye. The kit goes inside. Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
Guys another doubt,
sometimes when I apply my front brakes, there's a sound that goes like a cycle chain sound. Any problem with the brakes? The braking is good and no problem with that. The sound doesn't come when i apply rear brakes though..

Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S
That sound is normal. The brake pads are wearing-in. Its probably caused by the hard brake pads rubbing on the cooling holes of the disc. It will go away eventually. Dont worry about it too much.Originally posted by Muthu Palaniappan View PostGuys another doubt,

Brake pads needs to wear in for the first 100 - 200 kms.. after that the bite will be back. The brake oil should be replaced and completely bled in around every 2 years period. Make sure you use on DOT 4 brake oil as it has a better resistance against heat build up.
