    • Disc locking

What exactly is disc locking?? & how does it happen in rear wheel too since there is no disc? How to avoid it & how does ABS help ?? I'v tried panic braking a few times on my FZ but never faced any issue so far.

Disc locking is when the brake pads hold the disc so tightly that the disc stops rotating before the whole bike stops, which causes sliding of the tyre.
For the rear tyre, incase there is no disc the same scenario is called locking of the wheel (in general).
To avoid it you can either try to press the brake lever in intervals(like say 4-5 times a sec or more if possible ) or you can gradually increase the pressure on the lever and not jam it all together.
The first option above is the concept on which ABS works, it sense the speed on the bike and hits the brake in intervals (with a few millisecond gap) and not allowing the disc or wheel to lock at any point of time.
Normally its a very usefull device on slippery roads and wet surfaces, since locking is more easily to happen in such cases.
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

nice explanation dude.. Thanks a lot. So what may be aftereffects of a disc lock?? I kno obviously that the bike would skid & fall bt m talkin about how much can it affect the performance of your discs after such an event? I guess it must be working normally as before

there would be no problems regarding braking, once it skids and if you manage to avoid the fall, you can ride it as normal. The only thing you need to keep in mind would be the road condition(at that moment).
Not that more the amount of skidding more tyre wear, so you tend to loose your tyre grip early, and thus more locking-more skidding.

if the front disc locks in that case depending on the speed of the bike the bike will flip over in that scenario only cosmetic damages will be there on the bike and the people on the bike no performance drop should be there once repaired the bike will perform normally and untill and unless the disc or the calipers are damaged because of the fall there will be no loss in performance of the braking also...

Well that clears up my doubt to great extent. I have the practice to break hard at times but fortunately never faced a skid or disc locking. However over a period of time, I dont feel the same juice in my front discs as I felt before, It take much more time & effort to stopp the bike from speeds above 50. Further I hav strange ''Krrrrrrr" type sound coming from my front tyre only when I apply disc brakes. The sound has gradually increased over a period of time & I'v taken up the issue with yamaha & they say its normal sound in all FZ's. The sound becomes highly audible when travelling at nights or early morning when its very silent around. Its kinda irritating so i took the issue to other yamaha SVC & they told me to replace the brake pads & sound will vanish 4 sure. I'm about to replace the front disc pads this saturday, any inputs?

Honestly, if I were you, i would by the pads from outside ( but same brand-Nissin) and change them myself. Just to save some money and gain some knowledge and confidence. Apart form that i assume changin the pads should fix your issue.

I appreciate ur views bro & I'm too from the experimenting & learning types so would like to do it myself provided I have some backup info on the topic coz i absolutely have no idea on how to do it and never seen anyone change the pads before

The only reason I can think is of my chain is very tight. Apart from that there is no reason. Whats the solution to my problem. Please do reply
get the svc to check your carb tuning that also might be a reason.....
i dont think that chain being tight will cause such a drastic drop in the mileage....

the battery is housed in the middle panel on the right hand side to remove the panel first remove the seat. there should be screw or bolts to open.... (havent tried it yet...)

to disconnect battery just remove the wires from the terminals....
