    • I love the fz's performance below about 105kmph. its feels a lot more gruntier than the competition's bikes. And about the top end, i really don't feel safe riding at 100+kmph constantly. being india, no other driver gives you respect. They dangerously swerve onto your paths. people cross right in front of us thinking "its only a bike, how fast would it be going. I can cross easily". Then, there is also the typical indian dog/cow/goat who just dont give a s**t. The only time i feel comfortable pushing hard is on large city roads very early in the morning. But then, those occasions are few and far between.
after witnessing a fatal accident and once having seen my own life flash by after a near miss, i have slowed down considerably. yes, i have chicken'd out.
so, for me, the fz is the best for the speeds at which I travel. I love the feeling that you get when you pin the throttle and overtake in a blink while other bikes downshift and rev hard.

        • Suspension setup change?

Hello all! (New entrant here, Fz-16 key in my pocket since 4 months now )

Has anybody changed the suspension setting and tested it yet?

I was preparing my bike for a Saddlesore attempt - Blr-Pune-Blr.
and, I was wondering, whether setting the suspension setting slightly towards tight-setup would make the bike handle a bit better - and help it stay planted firmly on the road.

          Thoughts please.

I have two days to change the current setup (set to middle setting now),
and, I have a weekend (drive to Nandi Hills) to test it out as well.

          Thanks,

          Ace.

I find the stock setup perfect. If you make it more hard then there is a possibility that you might face some backache issues on the bad patches of the road. Since you are attempting a SS I would not suggest it. I haven't done a saddlesore but I am sure that the spine will take a beating with the soft suspension also.

Try to keep the stock settings. All the best for your SS.

Thanks a lot for the wishes and the suggestion.

I guess, for now, the current setup will stay.
Will test it on this weekend (trip to Nandi hills, and a sprint on NICE road).

Anyday buddy . Instead of making changes to the suspension I would strongly recommend going for 15T front sprocket from Unicorn OR Pulsar which is a direct fit in FZ/Fazer. If you overgear then your engine will be less stressed as compared to stock in the SS attempt. You will gain more top end but will lose the low end torque. Since you are doing a SS then top end should matter the most for you.

Just give it a try this weekend.....many of us are using 15T setup since we ride mostly on highways.

                  Oh! tell you what!
                  that, was indeed some telepathy

I just thought, If one reliable mod, that I can do to ensure that I can do this SS 1000 comfortably (!? haha)
(or just for my satisfaction, perhaps-) is upgrading to 15T (front sprock setup!)
I just gathered that from this very thread!
I recall the discussion where - for highway frequented rides going to 15T is good choice!
(again - not doing it in addition to 140/70 as that doubles the effect! right?)
Well since you suggest it now,

Let me check, if I can do that.
Will Orion Motors do that for me? ( I mean, Yamaha showroom - from Blr)

(that too, I am planning to go tomorrow evening)
Do you think it would be ok to get it done then?
( I mean, I know, its not a long job - but would need pushing rear tire towards front side-removal of 14T and replacement with 15T and then chain adjustment-which is still a job enough of hour's time.

If not please suggest me a good guy to do that ( I live in Blr - whitefield).
                  That would be great help!

                  Thanks man!

                  Ace.

Can anyone else from Bangalore help me with this?

                  • But it's fun to ride 15T+140/70 on pucca highway. It could touch 75 kmph around 5k rpm. I'll be reverting to this set up for Independence Day ride.

Doing a DIY thread for this, pending mod approval.

                    • First of all, I am sorry guys for coming up a bit rash on the last post.. I was in a terrible mood and probably that reflected in the text too.. I apologize and it wouldn't be repeated. you guys are a great community and I am honored to be a part of it.

                      now to the individual responses...

Sorry to hear about the tyre condition
what is the pressure you fill in the rear and front tyre
and how frequently do you check it ?

Regarding the tyre how old is it?
I suggest you to go to the MRF office and get the tyre checked
At SVC they charge 100 per puncture
i had got 2 fixed 2 months back
I maintain it at 28-34 as recommended.. I check the pressure every 6-7 days or so..

The tyre is the stock one and is around 8 months old now..

if you wanted continuos speeds of 90+ in city for daily purposes i am sorry to say that "yes you have chosen a wrong bike you should have gone for something else."

P.S: why dont you buy a puncture repair kit? it costs somewhere around 150rs for 4 rubber strips and the kit. it is quite handy and easy to use.
Well, as I have mentioned quite a few times earlier too, my daily commute is almost 60 kms between office and home and almost 40% of the road is highway.. thats where the speed goes to 90+ for the rest of the journey, its between 40-70 .. no one can ride in the city on 90+..

The point here is , With aggressive riding comes more wear and tear , that is but natural ... You need to be able to accept the fact that your bike's maintenance will be higher and the parts replacement interval shorter ...
First, its not 90+ ALL the time.. but yes, on the highways, it sure goes beyond.. and thats 40% of my daily commute as stated earlier..

I understand that it needs extra maintenance if you thrash it hard.. but I didnt think I was pushing it too much..

Yes, the piggy bank has been established to save for the mods..

So, the gist of the discussion is .. most of you believe that the bike has been behaving as it should, I'm just thrashing it too hard.. and the problems I am facing are normal with my kind of riding style..

It might be true .. but I still am not fully convinced on it..

but all said and done.. I realize, I love my NightFury too much to be bogged down by all these issues.. I'll try to be more careful with my riding but.. I dont think I can change much in the speeds area..

For now, the tyre is running alright.. I had a talk with one of my friends who has a FZ16 and he was just laughing at me for getting worried on 4 punctures.. He said, he has got > 20 punctures in the rear tyre in a period of 18 months.. and its still running great..

Couldn't come at a better time for me!

15T, I think, I can procure from Bajaj spare part store.
If the DIY is possible with tool set (which is common), I would love to do it! (just the 15T part not the 140/70)

                        On a lighter note:
with 17T or something and coupled with 140/90 or something could mean 100 at 5.5K rpm !

                        Thanks,

REVZ and PSD both are prone to punctures. Its bound to happen. I faced a lot of problems with punctures with my old REVZ but got it replaced dirt cheap from MRF for a new one. My friend who has a PSD is also facing puncture issues. So basically we cant help. Mumbai roads are bad and we cant avoid punctures. Navi-Mumbai is the worst place for punctures. If you cross the Vashi toll naka you can easily see lots of nails and screws lying on the roads. And on both sides of the roads you will find as many as 7-8 puncture repair shops. I am sure that these people are the ones who are responsible for most of the punctures there.

As far as regular service goes I have replaced my Air Filter, Spark Plugs, Disk Pad, Brake Liner as part of regular service at 12K Kms (They didn't go bad.....but I replaced it as per the manual). Also my starter motor went bad and it was replaced by Yamaha after a lot of fight. Maintenance is a part and parcel of any machine. If you own a machine you need to maintain it and its bound to create issues. The issues faced in your bike will not be same as mine and thats why we are here to help each other and gain knowledge.

Yesterday I went for the 15T Unicorn front sprocket. I drove around 100 Kms on the Eastern & Western Express highway and the effect was amazing. Stress on the engine was very less as compared to stock. So if you drive regularly on highways then try 15T setup. I am sure you will like it.

PS: Above mentioned things are just my opinion and came from my experience. I am sorry if you feel offended by any of my above comments.

Very well said guys. Its not a highway cruiser or a tourer. But will keep a smile on your face till 100 KMPH. Please dont ask what happens after that.

I am sorry for the last bit in that post.. I realize it was just the bad mood that was reflecting on me..

I have read your posts on your ordeal with MRF guys.. I'll get in touch with them if the need arises..

Thanks for explaining your points so patiently.. (and this goes for all other other guys here too).. in the hind sight, I now realize that the replaced parts were more or less the ones that are required to be replaced after a period..

I think I am a bit sore on the clutch plate and SPR replacement.. as I never tried any stunts on it and always shift gears with clutch fully pressed.. similarly.. I cant understand why SPRs went bad..

I may not got for the 15T mod.. as my riding is still more of city than highways..

Tools needed 8 mm ring spanner or socket set to remove sprocket bolt, 10 mm to open sprocket cover, 17 mm and 19 mm spanner to loosen the axle, 12-13 mm for loosening the chain tension adjuster and drum stay.
