but seriously, It can be from a number of things.
    time/km since last oil change
    cam chain not tensioned
    burnt valve/s (too lean)
    valve tappets need adjustment
    cam timing is out
    worn sparkplug
high tension (HT) lean earthing out
    CDI/electrics connection loose
    carb tuning (too lean/rich)
    carb blocked
    Carb choke stuck on/partly on
cat converter collapsed (very rare but can happen)
    bad fuel
    worn piston rings
    blocked airfilter
    PCV blockage

The list can go on and on. Need more details.

Just replaced the air filter, oil filter and Oil (Yamahalube SS) around 10k KM the bike is at 12K KM approx. The rattling noise started when the bike was 9K on the odo.

I have took it to yamaha SVC couple of time they just did Carb tuning, the effects fade away in 5-10kMs, the noise is back.

I enquired with a mechanic who works at small yamaha SVC, he said something about cam timings but did not check anything , just listened to the noise when idling and reving the bike.

I am a noob when it comes to engine parts ,please let me know if something seriously going wrong with my engine.

    • Rear Drum brake Making noise

      ODO Reading: 19,600 kms

I am having an annoying experience with my front and rear drum brakes off-lately. Both of them are making a lot of screeching noise at slow speeds.

As per my conversation with Abhimanyu31 it seems the rear drum has witnessed a bit of glazing.. so needs to be cleaned with acetone. I guess the brake pads also needs a sandpaper treatment.

Front brakes just need a bit of sandpaper treatment and cleaning thats all. Will keep you guys posted.

      Cheers,

        Cheers,
I have had previous issues of oil burn at high speeds. I would simply replace the oil in these cases and had started to ride more sanely on my rides. It was strange that it started smoking a few days back... Did an open heart surgery to find out if there were any issues with the block piston. No issues there.

Pushrods are used in engines (usually old american V8's) where the cam is lower down the engine block, there is a cam follower/lifter then pushrod that pushed against the rocker arm that in turn pushes down on the valve.

There is a Conrod. Is this what you meant? The connecting rod from the crank to piston.

Ah, I guess that is the one.. The mech called it Push rod... Its the Conrod

Do you mean the oil scraper ring? the wavy one?
Did you get the cyl rehoned, new compression rings installed also?

Yes the engine when fully opened does look impressive, though the big white plastic gear that drives the oil pump is not too impressive.....I would have much preferred a nice steel gear.
Nothing to the cyl.. just decarb.. the valves were good... just the gaskets and the oil seal... I missed seeing the oil seal,, And yes you are absolutely correct on the plastic gear.. that looks cheap...

I am hearing a lot of noises from the engine.. slightly rough...Not sure if it is the cam tension-er..

          • Battery Issues

            Guys,

My FZ has run 12.5K Kms now and my bike is about 1year 8 months old.
Recently, I have been facing battery issues with my bike. Early morning, it just won't start, I need to push the bike and start. It has already started raining here in Bangalore and what I see is whenever the bike gets wet and I try restarting it again (on a traffic signal for example), it just won't start.

Can anyone tell me if it's time for me to replace the battery ? And, Ideally after how long from purchase one should replace the battery ?

            Thanks,
            Sathish

is the starter at lest cranking up while pushing the starter or does it not even crank up and is your problem there only when the bike has been sitting idle for the night or even during the day?

you can do the following things....

              1. open the battery and fill it with water there are chances that your battery may be out of water because of which it is not charging.

              2. check if the battery is charging properly or not.... the battery voltage should be around 14V when it is charging.

              3. if it works after that it is ok otherwise you might have to check the starter relay. something which i had to get changed after around 18 months of usage....

              • That's really some good piece of advice man! Thanks!!!

Well, the starter does crank up initially, But it dies off as I try two or three times. I have this problem not just when the bike has been sitting idle, even if the bike is under the rain. I had the problem today too. I had parked the bike outside and it started raining like hell here in Bangalore, The moment I realized I had parked my bike outside, it was already 15mins into the rain. When I started initially, the bike did start, But suddenly after like 5 secs.. it switched off automatically, and then the bike just wouldn't start.

Like you have advised there, I will open up the battery and fill it with water morrow. The battery voltage thing however, I will get it done from a local mechanic.

the part in bold suggests poor battery voltage.....

for the rain part i think that water might be getting into the spark plug on the righ hand side of the bike... just cover it properly with the rubber tubing attached to it...

                  • Yamaha FAZER engine vibrations.. Help

My Fazer is almost a year old and i clocked 12400kms so far. I usually rev my bike to speeds say 65+ .

The bike used to run as smooth as silk till 9000 kms. then it gave problems in form of vibrating engine. the engine would vibrate as soon as the tacho reading shows 5000 rpm.

I immediately handed the bike to a service center in Chennai for 4th service apart from regular services they changed the air filter. The vibrations disappeared for a while.

I did my 5th service last week . Engine oil and spark plug were changed . I told the service guy about the problem and he said he would rectify it. after taking delivery and riding for a couple of days i am in a state of shock. The engine vibrates as if it doesn't want to go beyond 5000rpm. when i place my hand on the fuel tank, i could feel the entire tank vibrating. i don't want to take the bike to the same guys and argue.

                    somebody plz enlighten me.
is there some place in Chennai where this thing can be fixed..????

                    • Understood . I'll fill it with water and check again.

I just did a check on the spark plug tubing, it looks like it has been torn a bit. Will get it replaced. Will keep you updated

                        • Anybody tried installing the Apache petal discs on the FZ front assembly? I am thinking,as the petals look much cooler and heat dissipation is also much quicker.

What do the valve caps look like on the Apache?

i have a similar problem.. My idle rpms are 1300 but the bike fails to start smoothly whenever its sitting idle for more than 4-5 hrs.
What i did was, pull the throttle slightly and then crank..Voila! Just a second and it roars like a lion. Usually it was taking 6-7 secs continous cranking, sometimes two three times.. Battery is just fine.
In your case if the battery is low, to start that in one crank you can try this too.
