avoid putting the bike into central stand as far as possible on soft clay/ground. Always rear stand is preferable because even if the bike falls down on its side it will be cushioned by the side stand to an extend. I have found out that parking on central stand on soft clay is highly dangerous.
Thanks man, I owe you . One last question, please tell me the lowest speed to drive the third and fourth gears??? I'm asking because I don't want to strain the engine, by going too slow on the third of fourth gear. Thanks again

    • I am having a lot of grief with my unicorn and its vibes. the engine seems to be revving a little higher than it should and is causing a lot of exhaustion on long rides.

I did a little comparo with an old 150 pulsar and I found that the pulsar engine is revving at 4K rpm at 60kmph while my unicorn is revving at 5K rpm at the same speed. The pulsar felt so unstressed in comparison with my bike. I know that pulsars are higher revving engines than most, but mine seems to be revving even higher. I can feel the vibes starting at 50kmph and beyond 60kmph my unicorn begins to feels like a pulsar with all the vibes. By the time I touch 70kmph, the rev meter reads 6K rpm! Although the redline is still far off, I feel this is higher than it should be.

Is this a normal characteristic of the unicorn? could the bikers in this thread tell me the rpm reading at 50, 60 and 70kmph of their bikes?

      • ^^^ how old is your Uni? Mine is Apr 2005 and am experiencing the vibes for the past one year now. I did not check the revving (my tacho has gone bust). The ASS guys dont care and they blame the fairing to be the culprit. I have my doubts.

I for one am looking for a complete overhaul but not been able to spend sometime locating a reliable mech. I dont expect the service centre to care a thing about the vibes. They would say, at 5 yrs these vibes are expected

        • Mine is about 1.5 years old. I bought it in Feb 2008, and the vibes have been there since the beginning. I wasn't sure what to do with the vibes as I was a plain-jane commuter for many years with a Splendor.

I have tried many mechs i know; my chain is in pristine condition since I grease and lube it regularly myself. Oil is changed regularly with Motul. The tappets are tuned well too and I do get more than 55kmpl mileage with city riding. So that's fine too. After the comparo with the pulsar, I am beginning to worry that the engine rpm could be the culprit for all the vibes.

          • hm.. I dont think a high rev would convert to body vibes (with an efficient milage). Few more things you might want to look at the exhaust, leg gaurd attachement.

what are the visible signs of vibes? footpeg/handle/tank/exhaust?? Take a look at those.

as for high reving, check the idle rpm for hot and cold. make sure its is matching with the recommended levels.

I have checked the exhaust and the leg guards, saree guard, etc. Footpeg is fine, so is the handle and the tank. I don't enjoy redlining my bike to travel at 60-70kmph. I prefer a sedate bike at those speeds and that was the precise reason in picking up the Unicorn. It performs brilliantly within city limits, but when I hit the highways and exceed 60kmph, the vibes surface up.

The idling seems fine to me and I have compared it to other Unicorns as well. Nothing very different to notice. I rope up to the BIAL Airport along with a Pulsar 150 and when we swapped bikes, I was surprised to see how stress-free the pulsar was at 65-70kmph and would effortlessly touch 80. Mine struggles reaching those speeds and I can feel the vibes starting right from 4K. The Pulsar was doing 75kmph at 5500 rpm while mine was doing 75kmph at 6500 rpm.

That was the reason I wanted to know from other Unicorn owners if their bikes also give the same reading or not.

At 80kmph, my rpm meter crosses 7200 rpm.

No vibes from the fairing. All checked.

i've a 4th gen uni (nov 08), i think there is some seriuos problem wid ur bike, mine reaches 60kmph at 4k rpm in 5th gear, 80 kmph at 6k n 100 at 7.5k, i've done 124 at 9k rpm wid no vibes at all!!! plz have a thorough check up of ur bike in service center(if u trust dem) cos u'l hav warranty if there is any problem wid ur engine. use right grade oil 20w40 as i hav experienced lot of vibes while usin motul 20w50, go to a mech whom u trust upon n get d engine tuned properly.

                    • your disc plate seems to have lost its shape
higher the speed ,higher the power loss ,hence higher the rpm and lower the speed
try getting rims balanced and aligned
                      and/or replace the disc plate
The Automotive batteries are designed to work best in a typical short start-stop fashion.
So to increase the life of your automobile battery, blow the horn and flash the pass light in a quick start stop fashion instead of a conitnuous long horn blow or flash light continuous on!!
And obviously don't stretch the self start far too long.

                        50km @4k
                        60km @4.8k
                        65km @5.2k

@Alok: Those are the figures I am aspiring for!

I dont trust the ASS at all. No warranty on the bike left coz I was too pissed with their 5th service so I didn't get the 6th one done with them. I know a mech (Harsha) who is a very good mech but a little headstrong. I NEVER use 20W50 Oil. I only put in 20W40 mineral oil by Motul.

Disc plate? I need t get that checked then but I doubt that. I'll get the balancing done tho. How much is the disc plate to buy?

My my! I need to get the clutch plates checked, disc plates checked, rims balanced and engine tuned. I just hope that I dont need to replace anything tho, coz I am running thin on the pocket ATM and no warranty on the engine left.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll keep u guys updated.

IMO, he meant clutch disk/plates only! Just check the clutch plates.
