• Re: Honda CBR 250R

I once delayed changing oil filter to 15k kms. No short term problems, however, it reduces the service life of the engine. Although by my running needs, it's going to take at least 10 years to reach 1.5L kms, by which time other parts would malfunction. So, not a problem to change filter at 12-15k after warranty.

Hi Guys,

This question is regarding engine oil change.
As i know cbr uses honda throttle 10w30 and after reading many posts came to know of Shell ultra FS 10w40 engine oil for cbr as many believe that they are made for each other.

My question is that of the drainage interval- As for how many kilometres we can use Honda throttle and shell ultra FS on the CBR..

Please let me know on your experience.

Thanks [emoji120]

Ok, let me share my knowledge here. I had asked the same question to the best engineer here. His advise was, if you were replacing oil filter, the Honda throttle oil is good to use around 6k. But he was also saying, it always good to change oil prior to its last stage which will help engine in long life. In his view, yes shell is better than Honda but Honda synthetic oil not bad either. So if you are in warranty period, you don't need to switch to shell. So my overall understanding is, always try to change oil filter, and try to use the engine oil for 6 month or 6k range. Somewhere in team bhp I read a blog about a touring guy who change his oil in every 10k range and still running like charm. But I will try to service every 6 month or 6k range, not more than that.

Thanks Yathi it was very informative.. just one more question, how frequent should we replace oil filter, any range..

My experience is that using Honda Throttle for more than 1.5 k kms gives unnatural roughness and vibrations.

It doesn't last beyond that so after 1-2 k kms after service I replace with Shell (without replacing oil filter) and run for another 3-4k kms and by then its time for next service which is again with Honda Throttle.

As per Honda engineers every second service only required, may be cbrs refined and not so aggressive engine nature and synthetic oil can go easily 10+ range or an year. But what I saw last time was, when they open the engine case part where oil filter placed, it's like a chamber and it also hold some oil. So when you are not changing oil, some oil remains there. Only because of this reason I am planning to change oil filter every time, so that we can replace the old oil more neatly. Also I guess it's not so expensive, may b around 200 plus a small amount oil price.

In General biking group discussion shv18 using fz oil filter on his CBR, which is working effectively on his CBR as it cost merely 40-50 rupees a piece, whereas Honda oil filter comes with a high price tag of 268 rupees here in Bangalore.

I know i am sounding like bit stingy but there is nothing wrong if one can save some money on the small things were result is as same as of original. So anybody else did using fz or any cheap alternative of oil filters in their CBR.

Yea I noticed this roughness last time, may b it started after a 2.5k range and by the time I reached 4k, engine was very noisy. So if we go with shell or motul, is it good to use for 4-5k range? My current problem is, my brother took my spare bike and I am left with only an old bullet and CBR. So everyday I am in traffic with CBR, more than km, it's traffic which making problem. Bike always running on low gears, I believe this is one reason for less engine oil life. Any suggestions?

I was using Pulsar 200 NS for past 4yrs.. Moved to Honda cos of the reliable engine and quality..

For some reason my expectation is too low after riding CBR daily to commute to office..

Bike feels sluggish and gear shift and are not smooth..

I usually idle my bike for 1~2min before taking it out in the morning.. Still bike feels sluggish..

And also engine feels harsh and too much vibration through out the bike.. the windshield and mirrors vibrate..

Bike is around 8months old and ODO is 4.3k kms..

I ride at max 60~80kmph and use all gears properly.. still the ride quality is bad..
my NS use to be very responsive and peppy to ride.. CBR feels sluggish compared to NS.

What oil you are using and drain interval?
Chain lubing frequency, gear change rpm etc.

I use to shift gears at 4 to 6k rpm ( mostly 5k to be exact )

Chain lube depends upon usage. As i am using it daily for past 2 months, i lube it twice in a month after washing my bike.

As my bike has less ODO, my bike was serviced Aug 3rd week and using Honda engine oil only..

Everything is complete stock and no modifications done to the bike..

Note: using K&N Filter for past 2 weeks and still bike feels the same.. sluggish and lazy..

There is no Premium riding quality in it.

My observations and service recommendations based on experience -

- There are some vibrations in CBR at 3-4k rpm which can be expected from a 250 cc single cylinder.

- Dont use the aftermarket filter if you are not going to follow up with modifications to fueling with proper research.

- Replace Honda Throttle with Shell Advance Ultra 10W40 after 2000 kms and see a drastic change in smoothness. Shell will need about 100 - 200 kms to show its real effect.

- I lubricate chain every 700-1000kms with gear oil. Plays a major role in smoothness and vibration reduction.

Shell holds easily till 4000 kms. My advice is dont go by the drain interval suggested by Honda for Throttle (even Bajaj had an oil called dtsi 10000 and a claimed drain interval of 10k kms for my Pulsar 135 LS!!!).

Change when you feel a difference in the engine noise and operation.
For me, my ears and seat-of-the-pants feel are the first diagnostic tool I consult.

I tried few ( local ones ) they are shitty, they just leave a mess..

And the AIR FILTER i use is K&N Stock replacement air filter..

See pic. EP 140 grade gear oil is what I use.

About the filter, there is a very detailed thread by member shv18 about performance modification. Go through it, it will be an eye-opener.

I too have burnt my fingers in the quest for higher performance through the non standard route and hence my advice.
