        • I'm having a strange problem these last few days. When i start out in the morning, the gear shifts are smooth and easy but as it warms up instead of getting smoother, the gear shift becomes hard and shifts with a loud clunck. Sometimes from standstill, the gear refuses to shift into first unless i roll the bike forward. Even though my bike had its first service done a few days back, the problem still persists. I would be grateful to anyone who could help me out.

Ps. Before anyone asks, the chain has a slack of 1/2 inch and is well lubed.

            • Rahul - I agree with Sudeep; unless you've tweaked the rev limitter, you can't get to 12K RPM. Also one question for you - 11K in all the gears? I don't think so you did that past 4 or 5th gear. Pls confirm.

Raven - Have observed mine sometimes like that. Unless few ppl here comment, we can't take it as normal or issue.

@Srivastav - Where? Kun Adyar? What's your take on them?

Good to know that the problem is solved...Wrong torque settings Or over enthusiastic mech. resulting in over tightening of the stem bolts.

Just keep your ears open for a "klunk" sound if and when you hit a hump or a pot-hole. It shows the race is too loose and many lead to premature wear and pitting of the steering cone set.

Well to be honest .. I dont have much knowledge about all these .. am just learning here

                      BUT

I can tell you what the Mech did .. he unscrewed the bolt which is in between handle bars ( to be precise its right under the small honda emblem ) and he took a spanner and was hitting hard at something ... he put the side stand and he dragged way to left so that he can see the front wheel moving left and right without touching the ground and it was all fine

What could be it ?? any Idea guys ? He said it happens in most of the motorcycle's and it could be because of water ... and

for all the chennaites .... a piece of info ... Didar T nagar has got a set of LIMITED spares ... available with them ... dont exactly know what all parts are available but its a box for CBR !

He has just loosened the lock nut on the steering column. It might be a quick fix for the problem. Just hope there was no pitting on the ball race of the cone. If so...there are 2 solutions...one is to polish the cone set if the pitting is mild...or next is to ask for a replacement...b'cos the warranty holds good.

These are load bearing points & takes lot of abuse in its lifetime in a bike and needs precise settings of torque and good quality cone sets.

Water entry is a lame excuse...for lack of lubrication at the factory.

In case of my ZMA which is 6 yrs old, the entire cone set was re-lubed with silicone grease ( its expensive) by a local mechanic who is a dear friend of mine. Till date there is absolutely no problem.

Well the same treatment will go for my CBR..if the problem crops up...but, still early days for it.

Summary is ...either faulty cone set or bad workmanship...!!

I have had this problem with my bike. Eventually I had to get my cone set replaced. Just press the front brakes of your bike and move the bike in the front and check if you are noticing any duck kind of vibration from the front steering. If yes ask the mechanic to open up the cone set and then check the condition. Check if there is any rusting on the cone set. If it has rusted then it has to be replaced to get your problem fixed. Polishing is not going to help if the ball bearing has rusted.

Duck sound .. I can only feel the suspension sound moving up and down .. .and the front brake scretching when I put effort on the bike
