That is not bad at all. I would recommend to practice that. There are few benifits of engine braking and here are some.

    1) Engine braking while climbing down ghats is more reliable and it is very safe.
    2) Your Clutch wear reduces considerably.
    3) Engine always runs at almost constant speed without any sudden jerks which helps in a long run
    4) Riding style with engine braking increases FE, try it yourself.
    5) Decreases brake load and increases brake pad's life.

Do not use engine braking on sudden stops which may hamper the engine. Use it in gradual speed reduction it will really help.

+1; always do this & keeps in good control; engine braking with brakes works best.

Let me clear the air, what I suggested to stay away was to avoid 2 shift downs from higher RPM without even touching the brake pedal/lever.

      • One instance of where engine braking is useful and sensible...

When the traffic light is some distance away, instead of accelerating to a certain point and immediate braking to stop (which most people do), it is better to drop the accelerator completely and let engine do the braking. As youngking said, it helps increase the life of clutch plates and brake pads.

          • After reading about engine braking... i tried it... and it's really very effective in highways and touring.

            Thanks guys...

            • ^^^ Good to hear, but, I hope you're applying brakes in addition to shifting down the gears.

Though you are right but I think you slightly misunderstood what I was trying to say. I mentioned double downshifting whilst coming downhill, but did not say that I don't even touch the brake pedal. If we look at theoretically, I would only double downshift at a tight corner with considerable speed on tap. If I were not to use the brakes at all, only double downshift, at that speed chances are that I would end up locking my rear enough for me to kiss the tarmac. So it is a combination of both [engine braking] as well as light braking [not while leaning into the corner, but before that]

The practice I follow is, I downshift, tap the brakes slightly, study the apex, if required down-shift again and take the corner. Works well for me, you guys may choose to differ.

                  • Got my first servicing done today at just 557 Kms. Couldn't ride on most weekdays so this was just the kms added up on 10 holidays.

Anyways, got it serviced from OM Sai Honda, Charkop (they have shifted btw to a new facility which is walking distance from the older one).
Had earlier interacted with Galbir for my mag wheel so asked him to look at my bike as well for servicing. They didn't do much really, just changed the oil, filter (yes they had quite a few!), refitted my fairing as it didn't seem aligned properly, changed the clutch setting so that it doesn't knock anymore at lower rpms but I liked the way the clutch felt earlier...Anyways, they finally washed the bike which is where they really ****ed up. Bike fairing and tank was clean but after it came back they were grease all over! bah! The buggers went for lunch so I decided to take it home and clean it myself using a microfibre cloth ...
All in all, an alright servicing experience.

Also, had told em my front feels a little heavy and that the clipons don't seemed aligned properly but they said it was all OK! bah...I haven't faced any problems as such so didn't really bother pursing the matter as of now...

how many owners feel so??? Its the same with my CBR and the reason is a rusted/faulty cone set (confirmed by ASC) and they are waiting for the parts to replace it. So guys facing the same problem can get it checked.

Updates: Did some 1000kms in past 4days.. Mixed as single and with a pillion.. Top speed i could manage single was 151kmph and with a pillion was 143kmph. FE seems to be between 30 to 33kmpl from day one. However, with just 3800kms on odo, i feel the engine is very rough now. Feel the need to change the oil and check the valve clearence. The tappet noise has increased but the ASC guys say its normal. So i think i will just get it confirmed from some other ASC too..

OIL EXPERTS please suggest: As my bike is reaching 4k kms and there are still 2k kms left for next service, my bike feels rough now (roughness is felt particularly in city, and is not much felt on highways). The first engine oil change was at around 1k kms and was honda throttle 10w30. So my question is, should i change the engine oil @4k kms to mineral oil, use it for 2k kms and again get it changed back to Honda recommended throttle 10w30 FS or whatever best??? Does it make any sense to do so? Also if i do it, what oil should i change to? (I am thinking of using Hero honda's 10w30 mineral oil, so suggestions on it welcomed)

                      • ^^ make the jump to FS, and enjoy smoothness, Bike has run in fully.

Remember with extended running ( doing 1000 kms in 2 days vs 1000 kms in 20 days ), the oil will tend to degrade much faster. So if you feel its rough, change the oil.

Could you please tell me the impact of not changing Oil Filter..

Today also i tested on highway, unable to go beyond 130+KMP on full throttle, strangely RPMs were under 9k, could you please put some light on this.

btw, i got a call from dealer that Oil Filter is available for you as per your complaint to HMSI, i hope my bike go beyond 150+ post change of Oil Filter, lol

ive seen members reached 151+ km/hr here with extra juice remaining but length of road depleting
And u think a p220 does 145 true speed? Last time i checked the gps test showed 138.5km/hr
and where can i find those "few unlucky owners"? link please?
I am one of those unlucky owners, easily reachable to 110, but not able to go beyond 133km/hr(speedo) .

I hope you have completed least 2500kms on oddo. Do this
1> Change every gear (1-2-3-4-5) @ above 9.5k RPM and see bike flying past 140kmph in no time . I've observed that if you Upshift @ 5-6k rpm bike dont go beyond 130-134kmph but then this bike is from tourer family and i feel rather than trying hard to hit Top whack on every empty streach you find just Enjoy cursing @ 110-120 kmph .
Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.
