  • Crazy about yamaha r15 version 2..

    Dear friends,

Am very new to this xbhp... basically i am a laid back biker.. never bothered to know all the technicalities as i rode my pulsar 150 (2006 model) for 9 long years. Now am planning to buy new bike.. and i have shortlisted 2 bikes. they are
    1. Suzuki gixxer sf
    2. Yamaha r15 version 2.

Actually i commute 60km daily. I am 6.2. I had almost finalised gixxer sf untill i just rode r15 version 2. I just fell for that beauty. Now my dilemma is i am inclined to buy yamaha r15 but only thing that matters is mileage. Now, if i ride version 2 in very sedate condition, will i be able to get a mileage of 45?,,, please dont mind for my amaturish questions guys as i really want to own this beauty.. Any helpfull advice would be much appreciated. Please help me guys

      Welcome to xbhp bro.
I own R15 v2 since almost an year. I ride 70km daily from home - collage - home mostly on highway. R15 is a beauty if u want to drive it on highways with high speeds. even if u cruse at 80 u will mostly be able to get 40+ average. I have never ridden a gixxer as i have had a pretty bad experience with suzuki lately. So my advice would be r15 as i m pretty sure that yamaha is far superior as for the quality than suzuki in India. I wouldn't care if u get 5 km less than a suzuki if i get to ride a bike like r15. Go for r15.

What tyre pressure do you maintain??
Are there any advantages in keeping it 40psi?

          28/33psi.
Overinflating the tire may give slightly more mileage and flickability. But its not recommended as it will reduce the life of the tire also the ride will be less comfortable through bad patches.

May I ask why you aren't considering a CBR 150R? Because although it has it's set of cons like the switchgear and a slightly weak low-end torque, it will definitely give you a mileage of 45 on the highways if ridden well! In the city I get around 33 kmpl though, with a decent amount of revving up and extracting the sound outta the engine hahaha!
I used to ride 80 kms daily to office out of which around 28 kms were in city traffic, sometimes even bumper-to-bumper conditions. The remaining was all a stretch of highways! And I'd ride constantly between 70-90 kmph on the highway with occasional bursts above 110 kmph (for about 2-4 minutes in every 80kms trip) and still got 45 kmpl! On long rides on the highway a CBR can even give you upto 50 kmpl if ridden constantly within the 60-70kmph band!
So if you aren't against the CBR for any critical reason, I'd suggest you check it out! It's got a comfy seating posture and even a practical pillion seat if that's what matters to you.

I think I'm seriously missing something here.

Whenever I hit the reserve(F meter coming up) I'm always able to fill only 7 litters of fuel.

Total tank capacity 12L(-) Reserve capacity 2.6L is equal to 9.4L of usable Fuel.

So, what's the max you guys filled from reserve ?

well.. i am yet to ride honda cbr 150. I went through the specificatins, it all looked same, and if i am not wrong both cbr 150 and r15 have exact same specifications. But still cbr 150 costs good 10k more than r15...My budget is actually 1.5 lak so i can easily afford it. but i thought if i am getting the same deal at lesser price than why not.. but i will have a test drive anyway.. thanks for your advice bro..

SVC guys kept 40, bike felt smoother and faster, I changed it to 28 & 33, I can feel lot of vibrations now, wondering if low pressure hence more grip puts more load on the engine

I guess the reserve indicator is coming early in my bike. But having 5L+ in tank and yet hitting reserve is hard to digest.
Also when I reach reserve, some part of the fuel pump is above the fuel level. That says the reserve indicator is working fine.
I don't know what to make out of these

i get slightly more than 9 litres of fuel to fill the tank just as the reserve hits...this has happened every time, not just once or twice...i am convinced that in my bike the reserve is around 2.8-3L instead of 1.9L as mentioned in the manual...

it's possible the reserve is programmed to always show up a bit before the fuel actually reaches the reserve level, but whatever..

it also seems many, but perhaps not all, R15s have their reserve set at 2.something litres, because many people reported such observations when this topic was discussed at length in this thread few months ago...so god knows what yamaha have done with various R15s regarding their reserves :P

*cold* tyre pressures are supposed to be 28 and 33 psi for the front and rear respectively...so one should inflate it a bit more if the tyres are not cold (usually the case)...i used to fill 30 and 35 psi, but from the last few weeks i am going for 35 and 35 psi because for some as-of-yet unidentified reason my front started feeling not so good at the optimal hot tyre pressure of 30psi so i have started experimenting with 35 psi for sometime.

well i my case the reserve is set below the norm because as soon as my bike hits reserve it starts stuttering meaning there is no fuel left. after that one time i always reset my trip meter 2 to 0 at refiling and fill again at the 275 mark or a bar left shown.!

Had the worst experience ever just out of curiosity i pulled this seal on the rear brake calliper and was not able to put it back in. opened the calliper still wasnt able to put it back in. finally had to cut it to make it go back into its place again.!

DO NOT EVER PULL THIS SEAL OUT.EVER.!

                            Isn't the reserve 1.9L? I thought it was 1.9L

Every time I keep the recommended pressure of 28 & 33 I cannot ride the bike whatsoever, the bike feels all jumpy and in the air all the time. I keep mine at 25 and 30. At least I can ride it that pressure.

Also, this discussion about R15 not supporting 2 55W bulbs, everyone argues we need to rewind the coil. The FZ had a 12v 7Ah battery which was charged by a 135W(?) alternator. Ours I think is 165W which is ample for a 3.5Ah battery, so if i upgrade my battery to a 5Ah or 7Ah battery, it should hold the load of the 55W bulb fine, right? Or am I completely confused here?

Sorry guys my mistake. It seems even though if you fill about 7L the level comes very close to the opening. But still more fuel can be poured in, it won't overflow.
                              Thanks for helping out.

If you can spend an extra 40k you would be getting disk brakes on the rear tyre,17ps of power,6 speed transmission,Fuel Injected system, liquid cooled,48kmpl(my experience) and finally an awesome looking bike. These are direct comparisons to the gixxer sf.
