Re: KTM 200 Duke
is engine oil leak common with our dukes ? my bike is 4 months old and as done 3400 kms and while washing today i noticed that oil is leaking from the top engine. i read in the previous posts that most of the time its the head gasket. will engine head be opened ? would feel awful if the svc says it needs to be done.
earlier the forks now this
.
but duke is a duke.no matter what you compare it to the sound of the fuel pump when you click the ignition button and the purring when i give the idle warm up before twisting the throttle and the exhaust melody when i shift through gears . i feel this is the rolls of the 200cc motorbikes.
my dad loved his company bullet even though it would spoil his shoes with its spray of oil. so it must be something like that. take care of all the tantrums and you are good to go.Last edited by plexus; 03-16-2015, 11:28 AM.

welcome to the club ! 'from the top' - i guess you mean from the place you see a rubber gasket with the two 'O O' on top. That is the valve/head cover gasket and NOT head gasket. And yeh I've seen many dukes including mine that had a 'weep' of engine oil from that area. Mine started from around 1000km and i rode it until second service i.e. 5800km without doing anything about it. There was negligible oil loss and no issues. At second service they removed the top cover and used a sealant (seems it was recommended by company, was a loctite brand sealant compared to the regular ananbond sealant they use otherwise) . I was good for the next 1500km but again I have noticed the oil weeping a wee bit.
I did complete a 2400km trip after second service and the bike was ridden at 85-90 ish speeds constantly for 3-4hrs at a stretch everyday for 4 days.
At the next service which is due in another 1800km I will have them again remove it and use a new gasket and this time with sealant all around the gasket (earlier they just used the sealant around 'O O' area of the gasket)
So far my ride has completed 8900km is 5 months, and I have enjoyed almost every second on it ! 75% of the 8900km has been on highways.
The 390's are more prone to this leak from what I've seen, and some 200's are also joining this club. And the head gasket (is between the head and bore is located lower down on the engine) leak will require a little more elbow grease to fix.. Do not use any sealant's, just replace the gasket with a new one.. If a new gasket doesn't fix it, then you may have to use a wee bit of sealant around the edges.Last edited by s1d; 03-16-2015, 02:13 PM.

.Even mine had started leaking from the top head gasket, had to change the gasket twice. Was very very skeptical as to how the bike would run after the fix but the bike ran alright.Originally posted by s1d View Post

And after the stator coil went kaput, had the open the clutch side of the engine and Voila!, it started leaking from there too. The SVC mechs did a quick fix with some adhesive but I'm not sure how long that will stay.
You just have to keep in mind, most probably at some point or the other, the gaskets will start leaking oil or for some other reasons, some part of the engine will need opening, and you just have to live with it.
Believe me I even thought of selling off the bike at one point when there was the stator coil issue, but you just have to keep your OCD aside and live with the issues(Or call it Characteristics ).

I'm using Motul 7100 since the 1ST service. And yes the seals and gaskets were replaced every time any part of the engine was opened.Originally posted by krish2778 View PostWhich oil are you guys using ?

Re: KTM 200 Duke
I too have been using the 7100 oil. But I think this is an issue irrespective of replacing gasket or not. Have seen quiet a few bikes at the asc with the oil weep from the valve cover (minor, with almost negligible oil loss). When I asked the mech, he showed me a grey colored loctite sealant and said that the company itself has recommended to use this to stop those leaks. Also came across this bit from the workshop manual :Originally posted by krish2778 View PostWhich oil are you guys using ?

With these many no. of bumps the alloy wheel would definitely give upOriginally posted by offtopic View PostQuick bump..Also, what's the average price for a regular service?
. Irony apart, NO they do not break easily at least not on the 200's. I ve been on really bad road and also hit bumps, potholes and speed breakers at around the 70-ish speeds but no damage yet. They aren't 'unbreakable' and at the same time they do not snap like twigs going by what some people assume.
Average price for a free service is around 1500 rs. Oil itself costs 1200 (1.4 Litres, or 1600 if you buy the entire 2 litres and keep the remaining 600ml)
Oil filter 74rs, fuel filter around 100rs and then the air filter (which is again to be replaced every service/5000km) is around 230 rs IIRC.
Add in the spark plug if necessary.. I din't change mine at the second service and will do it at the third service 11000km.
Never been to a paid service yet, but i guess the 'labor' cost for a paid service would be around 400rs.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Hey guys!
I have to replace the battery on my bike and the stock exide battery is an 8A, my experience with exide batteries have been quite harrowing.
So I am planning on getting an Amaron 9A sealed battery, however I would like to know if there would be any problems to the electricals of the bike by using a 9A battery instead of the stock capacity. Kindly enlighten me.
Thanks in advance

What kind of harrowing experiences ? Anything specific to the Duke ?Originally posted by Gokul Chandrasekaran View PostHey guys!

A vehicle that is seldom used will cause its battery to discharge.. and repeated cycles of un-use will accelerate battery wear and eventually lead to its demise.. And if you did 'recharge' the battery (most battery shops recharge the battery in an hour or so - which is bad for the battery) then maybe the method of recharging it was not correct ( a trickle charge overnight/12hrs is normally recommended - you can read about the charging procedure on the battery warranty/manual booklet)
Now coming to replacement battery, Yeah its almost impossible (at least i haven't found a shop here in Hyderabad selling one) to get the exide 8Ah battery at local battery shops because it isn't a 'common' type and falls under the 'OEM' category (i.e. sold to motorcyle manufactuers directly). And KTM might charge a premium for this replacement battery.
Now the Amaron 9Ah battery, I have seen a few bikes at the ASC with this battery and asked the mechanic too... He has told me that it will not cause any problems.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Guys, I have booked a ktm duke 200 orange model otr 157,000 in Chennai. They said that they're out of stock and have ordered bikes in pune which will arrive in a week or so.
I'm planning to take it delivery on the day after easter. So, how do i know that they have given me the duke 2015 model(with better coolant and engine oil tank caps, handlebars etc..)?? or the older one.
There's also a test drive bike which is 2013 make. So, if i keep my bike next to the test drive one, can i spot the difference?
