  • My CBR

Hi All, on Tuesday 17th July 2012, I bought my CBR150R black + green bike from SVM Honda Ayanavaram, Chennai. Following are my experiences with the new arrival to my family.
    1. SVM Honda were really responsive unlike Kun Honda where I first booked my CBR150R and waited w/o customer centric responses and couple of false promises deceived me. I got my bike delivered in the next day when I called Mr. Saji in SVM Honda. Thanks to Saji.
    2. Thanks to XBHP friends who helped to know about the bike.
    3. My bike is still not registered, was informed by Mr. Karthik in SVM Honda that registration will happen on Thursday 26th July 2012 since papers not cleared yet. Some inspector has to sign he said. What did it mean?
    4.
    5. Overall driving experience was good except in city traffic where I struggled to shift gears often, and the bike went off couple of times in the mid of traffic. Hope gears will come handy soon.
    6. Can feel a bit of Back pain and wrist pain since I was not used to a sports bike lean forward type before. I have Victor GX (9 years old, still in good condition)
    7. Engine feels a bit of strained when I release the throttle at higher gears. Please tell me is that norm al or abnormal.
    8. After I reached home and put off the engine, I noticed a burnt smell coming from the engine premises. I touched few cables running across there and found they are melt slightly (felt soft). Although heat is only three bars. Anyone noticed this? Please clarify will this be ok in days or should bring it notice to the dealer. I have read about engine heat in this forum.
    9. I was asked not to start ignition until the speedometer is run and come to halt.
    10. Bike idle RPM is somewhere near to 1900. I was asked not to change this as it is factory setting and character of the engine. Your views please.
    11. I was not given pollution under control sticker, please tell me is that mandatory.
    12.
    13. Definitely CBR150R is a head turner everywhere you go.
    14. Tell me one thing, the visibility of CBR150R in Chennai roads is very meager or I would say nothing. I can find many 250s but no 150s. Does it mean we are having problem in registration of the vehicle. Though dealer gives assurance I am little afraid of this. Please clarify.
    15. Please tell me whether I can do water wash myself or only service centre people has to do. I am asking this because this bike is loaded with electronics, sensors at some places as you say.
    16. Which speed should I maintain?
    17. My heart alarms about the bike and I am not able to sleep well leaving the bike at the portico. Is there any other lock available apart from one already in the bike ? can we use remote lock system now?

Krishna, Welcome aboard man! Happy that another Greenie is joining in!
That was some heartfelt write up.
My replies next to the query quoted.

Maybe the RTO has to sign the papers. It's okay as for as TN is concerned. I took the bike to RTO and got my registration papers a week later. But, do it ASAP so that you can enjoy your ride without any worries of being stopped by police

You have to keep her in high revvs and to do that, yeah, you need to shift gears a lotta times up and down! But, once the gearbox gets settled in, it will be as slick as slicing a butter.
Never ever let the engine lug!

I feel the contrary in this terms. I feel the engine the kind of stressed that you said in lower gears. But, I guess that's normal for a mechanically moving part and it'll be more pronounced in a new engine.

Yes mate! Heating was a issue mentioned a little back but never after that as though we have added up a few owners.
As for the burnt smell, I too had it for a couple of days and it went off as kms went by! I feel that you are mentioning to the outer covering of the cables and as yu said they are of a smooth and soft material. They feel the same even under normal situations. Check that again bro!

I was given the sticker but was not advised to paste it on the bike. So, as far as they are not mentioning you to paste it in the bike, guess it's a no prob.

About registration, Chennai owners have to answer!
But as for the matter, Yes bro! That's a fact. Not in chennai, even here in sivakasi, a little town, I could spot more that 5 250Rs., but not a single 150. Maybe owing to its lower VFM image and probably because its competitor has its roots deep!! (R15) Though, the owners know it is worth the penny spent, (okay, not every of it )
And you what, with this I can say that my bike is kinda unique to find! though it's not an underperformer!!

A smooth spray wash is okay, but a heavy water wash, and you have to clean and lube your chain after that! So, better avoid it!
And as for the electronics, I have done a small water spray wash at home at she's doing good!
Remember not to wash after operation! Wash in the mornings after a night halt!

About a Third party locking system, it'll hamper your warranty if installed. So, you have to be without it atleast until warranty expires.
Disk lock options are available, but little impractical for regular usages. Try them for night garage stops. But, check with your ASC before installing it even.

BTW, if sandhana pottu is kept somewhere don't try removing it., let it fall itself. I try removing the one on my visor and left a reaction spot. Dunno, the santhanam reacted with the visor material and left a spot!

      • Conversation for Breaking-In of CBR150R --- Excerption of posts from page 119-121

        Pre Note to MODS:

This post is a collection of conversation of about breaking-in a CBR150R. The controversy raised was it being a DOHC. This conversation between some members about the breaking-in is a collection of posts from pages, 119,120,121 with some in-between posts left. Thought this could be useful as a single reference for the future coming queries. We could be able to easily point them to this post. I just had enough spare time to spend on the forum. I never saw a collection of posts as a single post, so if it is okay, let this post be, or just leave a note to see the above mentioned pages for running-in. Anyways, let the good be for the forum and the members.

Smooth acceleration, let the rpm rise till 5k, and upshift. Downshift to reduce speed. Is this way of running-in correct??

All I could reach was 3rd gear within town limits and 4th in outer limits of town. For once reached 6th and she glides at ~55kmph with around ~4k rpm! . Dunno, if am sure, but will double check again when chance comes.

For 250R's it was only recommended to revv gradually and avoid sudden acceleration/braking until first service or 1000kms(to be on safe side)

IF there is no mention of How to run-in in ur manual, do not try any run-in method. Ride normally like you would but avoid sudden acc/deceleration

So, that means I can very well take her still further up the rev range "smoothly"??
And also, what is the best rev range to shift up, considering the 150r's engine?? I seriously don't have any idea, asked this as your experience may have some answer!!

There is no optimum shift rpm for the bike but the only suggestion is to NOT lug the bike(i.e., riding at 3k rpm or below in higher gears) which will damage ur engine in the long run. To identify if you are lugging the engine, you will hear a faint knocking sound whenever ur in a higher gear and moving in low rpms(below 3-4k)
So avoid it and just ride it like you would normally but do not accelerate/decelerate in a hurry. Just vary it gradually.

DOHC works best when revved harder. The engine is built to be revved harder. Your motoman's technique of limiting the bike to a certain rpm does not help here.
This is exactly the reason why your manual has no mention of how to run-in the engine. Your bike makes peak power at higher rpms compared to SOHC and given that ur bike comes to life only past 7k rpm, maintaining 4-5k is not just difficult, but unnecessary aswell.

Running-in thru Motoman method, mean 1st 30km rev high on Gear 2 to 4, rpm don't hit above 9k/rpm....just run her hard!!

After 30KM change the engine oil(mineral oil), now on I'll run her just like normal way we ride a bike,70km/h 90km/h even 110km/h also no problem, but if you don't feel to run until 110km/h, no problem, 95km/h can also.... Most important thing rev high on gear 2-4, let say rev 6k rpm or 7k rpm on each gear....

Change engine oil on 500km, apply the same way as above ,
Change engine oil on 1500km, running-in up top 3000km, change oil, Cheers, Your running Done!!!!

Well, this is what I do on my CeeBer........ And I love her so much....

No problem at that but I feel that you wont get any problems initially at below 10k Kms, and also did you repeat that method for 500 and then again for 1500, did you go for the first service yet?

When you keep riding below 5k rpm for a long time, your pistons will get used to being revved upto 5k only. Then when you complete your 1000kms and decide to let her rip, you will feel the engine being sluggish and sometimes the needle will take ages to reach to the topmost permissible rpm on the tacho(experienced by many 250R owners including me). This happens because now ur piston needs to get accustomed to higher rpms(above 5k) and you will spend another 1k or so trying to get the bike to run like you want it to at higher rpms.
This is exactly why we at the 250R thread keep asking newbies to avoid the "revv upto 5k only" run-in method. This isnt an SOHC engine. SOHC engines are built to perform at lower rpms and the 5k rule makes sense. DOHC's work on the other side of the rpm meter, which is why limiting to 5k will only make it sluggish when you open it up.
I hope you got the point.

Yes, it seems 26th July seem to be very far. Infact I was once caught by the police when i was on the way from the showroom to home near Anna Nagar. I cursed my bad luck. but then that police officer was good and understood my emotions quickly, he briefly checked papers i showed to him and let me go. He also wished me good luck. I told him that this is my first day with the bike, and he replied dont worry you will never get into trouble anymore. I was happy and hit the road. Head constable "Atu ayya" was also there with him.

Tnks bro. As pointed out by neevarp16, those photos were clicked before installing the RVMs at the showroom. I will never do such crazy things. Infact, i was telling my nephew to install rear view mirrors to his P180. You can see the P180 w/o RVM.

                  • I took my Bike today for Honda CBR camp being held at my dealers Service Center. I had to wait all day long but most of below mentioned issues were taken care of:

                    1. Engine heating and burning smell.
                    2. Chain Slackness
                    3. Lack of bite from the front brakes
                    4. Gear Down-Shift issue

Engine heating issue was looked at by several senior engineers from Honda including several Elderly Japanese Gentlemen. The suspected some rubber part was burning. But, the problem went away after the radiator was cleaned thoroughly. Also, I got to know that radiator fan works after engine reaches 98 degrees centigrade.

                    Chain Slackness was also corrected.

However, they ignored the rest two, I also didnt push as they are not either not that severe or only intermittent.

I also mentioned the switchgear i.e lack of kill switch and pass light.

They noted it and said they too felt the same. However, they said it will take some time before something is done about it.

Attaching some pics from the day.. Body panels had to be removed from both sides even the side covers were removed.
Just for info: Some 16 CBRs turned up at the camp including 4 CBR 150s (two white reds incl mine, one black white, one orange)

                      ....
Its happy to hear that the issues got resolved

Regarding the front brake, I read somewhere in the forum that DOT4 performs well than DOT3 and gives better braking performance! You too could try that!

Good, I did see the RVMs with the garland during the pooja pic. I took the first two pics to be after the pooja n stuff during a ride or something since it was with a non Honda bike. Message conveyed anyways

The lack of bite from the brakes could be because even new brake pads need some time to get settled (you may call it a breaking in as well). If thats not the case then you can bleed the whole of your brake fluid, which I'm guessing is DOT3, with a DOT4 oil & you'll feel significant difference in braking. But make sure to bleed the DOT3 oil fully, DOT3 & DOT4 oils must not be mixed up and used.
I can vouch for DOT4 oil as I've been using it & I'm impressed.

For making the downshift a bit smoother, blip during downshifts. Also check your gear shifter link rod. (the rod connecting the shhifter to the gearbox).

                              Happy mile munching!!

The battery warranty card will be tied up with the battery and will be in the battery block itself.
