  • reason most probably is the fuel(water in fuel) as ur bike is running normal now...but a proper diagnostic is definitely required

For the first time in my life I was stranded in the middle of a busy highway intersection (never was I let down by my machine; not even with my old FZ).
Reason: my NS's engine quit without a slightest warning. I could not get it to start no matter what I tried. The self was working fine. So I assumed the fuel was too low (below reserve). But the gauge showed three bars. Thought the gauge might be faulty. There was enough fuel in the tank though (fuel in the tank was about 2 and a half weeks old). Anyways, I just went to the nearest house and asked for an empty bottle and took an auto to the nearest pump for petrol. Despite pouring fresh fuel it wouldn't start. Then I tried to push start. It did not work. Oil and coolant were adequate.
Being a Sunday the svc was closed and so were the other workshops in the area. My friend came down and with his help we pushed in gear for 40 metres and finally the engine sputtered to life. I don't know what to call it - luck? What could be the reason for the engine to fail so suddenly. I maintain my NS so well.

Here are a few things that came into my mind:
    1. Bad/Old fuel
    2. Dirt in the fuel
    3. Valves got jammed
    4. CDI issue
    5. Fuel over flow into the cylinder

Has anyone come across a similar situation.
The bike is running fine now.

Would love to see your views and thoughts on this.....

Well it happens bro, nothing to worry about, although i don't have the NS as of yet(taking delivery on tuesday inshallah) i have experienced it on the Hunk which i previously owned, its definitely due to water in the fuel tank or dirt on the carb or any other similar reason, but do have everything checked to ensure you know the exact cause

The bike now sounds like an autorikshaw and it heats up pretty fast.it has been 2 weeks since i gave my ns for repair to the svc...the svc people are telling me they need to replace a bearing and since the spares are not available there they have been keeping me waiting.i don't know what the actual problem is. GUYS help me... what do you think the problem might be?.Is there any chance that they will replace my NS for a new one if i go to consumer court?
Happened with me once. Though not on the NS but with my old CBZ*. The only thing then i did was rode the bike with the throttle completely for a few minutes and then by next day morning it was up and running. Like Sayank said - this looks like a problem with the carb. But better get it chked with the SVC guys.

Anything(mod or upgrade) is better unless you void warranty or insurance claims.
Though it is written that warranty will get void by using another oil other than DTSi oil but no body can distinguish the difference whether the engine is running with a Motul or DTSi oil. Hence if one feels to upgrade to better oil i think he should go for it.

Like someone mentioned a few posts back the SVC guys do suggest to go for Motul saying that it is better because it is synthetic etc. etc. Dewan Bajaj Okhala SVC does it.

              • Post 2nd service ran my bike for almost 500km and changed the oil to Motul 5100 15W50 mixed with Motul 3000 15W50 (i had about 600 ml of it left from my last oil change). I still have to feel the difference with this oil change. It could be there but i cannot make it out at the moment maybe after a running of 100 km might feel it.

Well i changed the oil myself. Had bought the oil filter from SVC and then got 1 litre of 5100.

I drained the oil after i came back home, after giving a 30 minute rest to the engine to cool down a bit. When i changed the oil it was still warm. changed the filter as well. Getting the filter out is tricky hence had to use two safety pins to get it out. while changing the filter around 50-100 ml of oil drains out through it.

Now when i refilled, it took around 1.4 litres of oil - 1 litre of 5100 and around 400 ml of 3000.

I kept a close eye on the oil level indicator poured in 1.2 liters at first the level showed the correct level then i started the engine and left it on idle for around 2 minutes and then turned it off, went for a short break. When i came back i saw that the level had gone down so had to pour in another 200 ml to get to the correct level. why does this happen?

Yeah..you are right...thats because at those rpms you don't get enough power. Till the rpm is slowly increased to more appropriate value like 4000rpm, you don't quite get the push. Can't complain about that, now can we??

And lets not talk about what BAL has mentioned in the owners manual...please tell me how many of the owners are still using Bajaj DTSI Oil and that too till 10000km (thats the drain interval claimed by BAL). Dont you think they've done testing before specifying the life of the oil??!! Somethings should be left to practicality bro.
Sorry dude, guess I offended you. You said the bike lugs at the rpms suggested by the manual, right?? I assumed that you must have tried it with your bike. Actually I had issue with low rpm power delivery and it was sorted out by carb tuning. The svc mechanic told me that poor throttle response is caused bu carb. So I suggested, you get your bike checked.

I shouldn't've assumed that. Sorry again.

And I don't think my 1st and last lines are really contradictory. We have had this discussion before that, "may be" Bajaj has given too conservative run-in guidelines, as this is a new bike and new engine design. So, I think, even though they are overkill, they would not really lug the engine. That was my point.

And about engine oil, well I tried to get a reason from Bajaj CC why they recommend only DTS-i oil and how is it better than other oils like Motul. The only response I got is: We are looking into it. Its just a business tactics and nothing else.

I was never a "by-the-book" guy. I just check the things on my own and see if I can find a rationale behind it. No logic and one can ignore the rule safely. I did not follow the run-in mentioned in the manual, rather followed the one which most of we agree to be good in this forum. 50-55kmph with occational high rpm run.

Imagine that you are riding a multi-speed bicycle.... at the highest gear... wouldn't it be hard on your legs to pedal at very low speeds?
Well I agree that It might damage the engine. Not that I recommended ever that it does not damage the engine and one should do it often. 35@3000 is the extreme case and once in a while one ends up in such situation in traffic. Well, Not even the manual says you should do that. But the point was, engine does not lug even at such extreme case. In fact I like NS's engine a lot. What I hate is the way the sub-assemblies are fitted together, giving rise to unpleasant vibs.

Now a drum brake has a little bit of play as compared to the discs on the ns..
Even a little.pressure on the pedal while driving might cause the brakes to heatup.. just check if you do this while driving..

I dont intend to offend anybody, but we all have some room for correction in our riding styles
I have a habit of applying a little pressure on the break paddle so that in panic situation I can quickly apply breaks. So I have kept the rear break a little loose. It gives me that little play I need. And also the way the rear Eurogrip tire slips under hard breaking, I find it wise to keep it a little lose so as not to get too much breaking, and use front break mainly.

One has to change riding style to suit the bike or modify the bike to suit your riding style.

                      • Hey Fellas, noticed a small hole below the silencer... dont think it is created by any accident, because the hole is very fine and perfectly circular
My issue is i saw waterry liquid flowing out of it in the morning... could it be cause of dew or has my beast started to pee ??

I think all the bikes have that hole, and it is drilled for draining out water that may enter through the exhaust.

                              • I just used Motul Outlet locator & found out there are several dealers around in Noida, I just hadn't looked at the right places. Went to one & he had almost all Motul brands. Didn't buy any though. Confused about what to go for. at 2400kms if I get 2ltrs of 5100 15w50.. about 800ml will be wasted from the 2nd bottle. But If get 7100 20w50 I can use 1200ml, & the rest 800ml will be used at 2nd service oil change. But again as people say 7100 is too early until 5000+kms. & I'm just at 2400kms.
BTW, Motul India on FB says they plan to release 1.2ltr package for NS by April 2013. Duke also drinks 1.2ltrs guys ? Also do we also change the Oil filter along with engine oil ? Any specific one ?
