Hi Guys, Please sugges me which engine oil is best for Suzuki Gs 150R. How about Shell helix, Shell ultra(Synthetic), Castrol Power 1 Racing(Synthetic). Apart from these is there any other best.
    What is difference in below
    1. 20w402. 15w40
    3. 10w40
    4. 15w50
    5. 20w50

I recently used Motul 7100 20w50. Ride quality smooth but reduction in mileage and throttle response.

I believe GS owners should stick to *W40 only. * is dependant on where you live. Lower grade for lower temperatures, higher for higher temperatures.

I have heard good reviews about Gulf Pride 4T plus 20W40. Going to try that next.

Which synthetic oil is preferred for the GS?

My bike has done 33k odd kms now and thinking of getting it serviced for the first time from local mechanic instead of Suzuki service center and change to synthetic oil as well.

          Hi Chiron,

After riding for almost 36000 with Castrol 20W40, I switched to Mobil Extra 4T 10W-40 Semi Synthetic (330 Rs) at 36000 and again filled the same at 38000.

Gear shifts seems good with Mobil.

Odo will reach 40000 within a weeks time.

Thanks but I am thinking of going for synthetic so as to go without oil changes for 4-5k kms.

Hi..you may consider shell advance ultra fully synthetic oil. Shell offers good performance for gs and you can easily clock 5 to 6 k kms with top up if required.
There is also castrol power 1 racing if you can source genuine product.

                Hi Guys

Need your help in identifying a problem - engine clicking noise. I have posted a video here:

I somehow dont trust the service centre guys. I thought it was the tappet - and asked the mechanic @ ABT in Chennai - he readily agreed. Also the noise has been persistent for the last 10K km - I had asked my local mechanic to look into it - but he seems to not able to solve it. Along with the noise - I feel there is a significant loss of power at lower revs.

                  Does sound like tappet noise.

Why don't you trust the service center mechanic? Past bad experience?
There are quite a few members on this thread from Chennai so you can seek their advice regarding other service centers than the one you mentioned or some third party mechanic.

It could be very well be tappet noise - but the chances are that it could be anything from the Cam chain, the cam chain tensioner... etc. The fact that they readily agreed without making a case for any of the other possibilities - put doubts into my head.

Bad history - yes kind of - every time I have given the bike to the dealership for service - I was never satisfied - they never mentioned the chain was loose and worn out, the best was - they could not tell me what was wrong with my front brakes - which was very spongy and failed sometimes. Not even my local mechanic was able to tell me about the front brakes. Finally scavenged the internet myself and found that it has to be piston under the reservoir. Bought the piston set myself and changed it, bleeding it to remove the air bubbles was the difficult part - but managed to get it out by pumping the brakes with the reservoir open.

I adjusted the CCT yesterday and background noise seems to have reduced and the clicking sound more pronounced. Here is a new video I made after the CCT adjustment.https://youtu.be/okOh-7CCsJ4

I am going to order myself a feeler gauge and check out the valve clearance myself. The tappets must be really off by a distance to be hammering the valves this loud. Once done - will post the results.

Hi... Has anyone changed to tubeless tyres? .. Is it good?

Enquired in a local shop and he said tubeless can't be fit in this Rim... Is it so?

I have installed tubeless tires on the back. I tried for the front also - but I had an accident when I hit a big rock in the centre of the road at night and bend my front rim slightly. I got it hammered and straightened without cracking. You cant really say by looking that it has been beaten back into shape. But the mechanic did not want to take a risk by installing tubeless in the front.

Now to the problem - there is a consistent air leak from both my front and back tyres. (around 1 PSI every 2-3 days). The back tyre is cause of the valve. The rim is not made for tubeless and hence has a deep "U" in the centre of the rim on the inside. When you install the valve it does not seat 100% properly and you have to install rubber washer. The washer cracks over time and air keeps escaping. Front tyre air leak - mechanics have not been able to find the problem - no puncher, no air leak at the valve - so no clue.

Don't install tubeless tires on tube rims. Rims are differently made for each types. Better install a grippy tyre like the mrf nv series or zapper q.

Thanks for your advice. I'll stay with tube type itself.

So managed to open up the valve covers and the cam chain cover.

                                The Valve section:

Everything seems to be good - not sure about the tappet clearance - have not yet got my feeler gauge. There is a very slight play on the tappets - not really noticeable.

There is a "L" shaped thing that was making a clanking sound. Apparently - it is a auto-decompresser trigger to help you start the engine. Not the one making the ticking/clicking noise. The cam chain itself was tight - no play at all.

Another trick that a friend of mine recommended was using a mechanics stethoscope. Yes it is a thing! Since I did not want to invest in one (around 2 grand on amazon), I used a screw driver to listen to the engine (Pointy end on the engine and the handle in one of your ears. Close your other ear. With the engine running - put the pointy end on different parts of the engine and listen to the noise.) The clicking sound seemed loudest on top of the intake valve tappet cover. So now I have a question - what will happen if I tighten the inlet tappet? and what will happen if I loosen the inlet tappet?
