    • its too late to worry about break in process. one thing learned is not to use synth oil anytime sooner.

i already crossed 4k so i can rev hard in 2,3,4 for my satisfaction in break in process

This link clarifies most of the doubts. Can i ask for a piston ring change and do break in as per the link? Will that be effective.

In that link its mentioned that if the engine is not run hard for the first 20 miles the ring wont wear out equally and have to repeat the whole process with new rings.

Another doubt is that , the method is applicable to high power engine with light weight forged pistons. Since ours is very scaled down one will it hold true? I pray its not true and my engine running was fine.............

thats what im saying stop worrying its too late for us. once we get prob we will change the piston and we will start over again . till that time believe our bikes break in correctly.

          • Rough engine....

            Hi gs riders,

I own a Grey gs,nearly three months old(1120km)...This site is very much useful to share our experiences and get valuable suggestions.

presently i am heading for 2nd service on 27th of this month. The problem is with the engine. The engine is good for initial few kms,but as i ride(i always ride within 4500 rpm only, following Eco mode) the bike after that, my engine makes heavy sound than usuall and there is something like grinding occurring in the engine and i can feel vibes of less intensity.(it is similar to the problem expressed by bala in this thread)...and the pick up seems on the downside.
i went to ssc twice for the same issue and they say that everything is alright...

1)does anybody experienced the similar situation?please let me know your thoughts..on this.

2)do i need to shift to motul?if yes when and what grade of motul do i need to use..as many said that using motul will decrease the above said problems.

3)Did anybody installed petrol antitheft lock?please let me know the brand and the price...here in hyd i searched alot but in vien no gs specific antitheft is available.last time i poured 4 litres of petrol, after reserv and i got only 90km. and after that i again poured 4 liters of petrol and know it gave milage of 211kms(53kmpl)when it halted at reserve.

            Thanks,
            Nageswer.

            • Welcome Nageswer

Welcome to Gspian thread Nageswer . 3 months of ownership and only 1200 km .

Ans: Bike is still going through the break in period where the friction between rings and cylinder is high, it gets hotter soon. On high temperature the viscosity of the oil reduces and thats the cause for the harshness. It will reduce as you cover some distance.

I went to S.C twice for the same issue and they say that everything is alright...

Ans: They know these kind of problems are common and may be bored with such queries.

1)does anybody experienced the similar situation?please let me know your thoughts..on this.

Ans: Everyone might have experienced such problems, keep an eye on mileage, as it gives clear indication about the engine health. Above 50 while riding in eco mode is perfectly ok.

2)Do i need to shift to motul ?if yes when and what grade of motul do i need to use..as many said that using motul will decrease the above said problems.

Ans: Synthetic oils cant be used as they are very slippery and arrest the breaking in of engine. Should only shift to fully synthetic after 3 or 4 mineral oil changes.

3)Did anybody installed petrol anti theft lock? Please let me know the brand and the price...here in Hyd i searched a lot but in vain no GS specific anti theft is available.

Ans: I'm leaving these space for the correct answer. [Saw a similar question in FZ-16 forum. There it said about 125 rs for the unit and 50 Rs for labour charge, which is placed beneath the seat. It was bought from local bike spare parts but service centre guys fixed it on bike]

Last time i poured 4 litres of petrol, after reserve and i got only 90km. and after that i again poured 4 liters of petrol and know it gave mileage of 211kms(53kmpl)when it halted at reserve.

Ans: Engine is in good condition.

I wholeheartedly appreciate your valuable suggestions.

It is the first bike of mine(never i road bike).and furthur more i relay on my company transport for to and fro from home.

1)what is breakin period exactly? and for how many kms it is?

2)I hope you must be atleast 6 months(gs ownership) old and more.as per ur experiance have you passed through the same problem(as explained above) and setteled down with smoth engine now?as u rode more kms.what is the kms after which engine will be smooth?

3)i am planning to go for teflon coating.is ir correcrt or should i have to shift to some other alternative.Any cleaning agents sugested/used by you which is good.

                • Break In Period

Breaking in or running in of engine is the process of wearing the piston rings and other internal gears to bring their contact optimal. In order to lower the production cost and through put of engines made, factories tune the engine only to a certain point. A fresh engine is like a rough polished gem, the more you run the smoother it gets. It is said that 80% of the break in of engine occurs in 20% of time and rest 20% requires 80% of time.

Each company suggests certain procedure they have to follow to properly break in their engine. Not just engine, but the brakes, tires everything need certain time to become fully functional with variable times. Suzuki mentions not run the engine more than 6000 rpm before the first 800 kilometres and 8000 rpm before 1600 kilometres. This time is considered to be crucial for the efficiency and durability of engine.

The first service is the most crucial service of all, where you change the engine oil and filter which will be contaminated with fine metal particles due to the friction of engine components and gears.

Some riding procedures suggested during break in period are as follows:
                  1. On cold start always use kick starts. Run the engine idle for atleast half a minute.
                  2. Vary the engine rpm freely and shift gear at correct time just as engine rpm reaches the 4500 rpm.
                  3. Never ride at same rpm for too long, say 5 mins. Slow down a little then gradually increase the speed. This is to cool the engine parts which will cause proper wearing and mating of parts.
                  4. Always ride in proper gears and don't use clutch to keep engine from stalling as in stop and go city driving.
                  5. Since engine is new don't drive for extended intervals take short breaks while riding so.
                  6. Before turning off the engine keep it idle for half a minute, which will aid for rapid cooling.

So these explanations answers your first question about break in period.

For the second I'm a proud owner of GS for the last 5months and completed 2 free services with 3rd service due on this week. So far i have covered 5300 km. I too have experienced almost all the above mentioned and most of problems are long gone now. One more problem you will face is loosening of chain. Since you haven't ridden much that wont come any sooner . Nothing serious thats just matter of time it loosens, and S.C will tighten it.
You can go for Teflon, that wont affect anything. Some S.C do that for free. Most of them just do polishing though. So far i haven't used any detergents just water to clean the bike. After watering use regular cloth to wipe the water and cotton cloth to give it a shine.

have you ever rode uni and fz?what are your comments in relative to gs in terms of performance, comfort and engine refinement?which one you rate uno?

Please also comment on the remaining two queries.

                    • I have ridden both Fz and Uni. I have always wanted to own a Unicorn ever since it was introduced. With GS introduced into market, it was more of a value for money product. This forum has helped me to make a decision and im just doing what others did for me.

Comparing these three bikes wont be fair . Each have their own qualities, Uni and GS are very similar. In terms of engine refinement Uni will be in front and in all other field there is little difference . Personally i feel, GS has better handling and seating comfort. The mono shock absorber makes a lot difference in handling, but at slow speeds with pillion dual shocks will be better.

FZ is in a different level, smooth engine, flawless transmission system and great looks. Sweet handling with mono shock ups with linkage, very nimble through traffic, but its costly and suffers in mileage.

As everyone says GS is jack of all and there is something in it, that made me stick to it....

These are my personal opinions, anyone is open to correct me.

                      • Now Test Rode today the GS now the Guy actually Took out the the Vehicle from Inside the Showroom it had run 3 Kms Ok how was it here is my view

                        1) First thing first i have not ridden much of a bike so if there may be difference in my opinion.

Now lets start the Price he quoted 63435 but website quoted 62435 So i will be not paying more than that a single penny.

I told him boss i am looking into Honda Dazzler as well and he was i must say not Very pleased Any way i told him need the 2010 Model he had the 2009 Model In blue I was flattered by the Color .

ok Time to test ride The Showroom was in a area were metro work is going on so many bumps and i only got i will say 400 Metres or less of Test drive but tried to Rev it as much as possible max i got to was 4K RPM at around 20Kmph at 4th gear. Braking Rear the bite is not much.

Oh forgot i was testing the 2010 Model And the gears were butter smooth no Fault shifts was very convenient. The Console Was good. Some Said about the initial Pick Up not good i found it to be okk but Apache was awesome but I was riding with a pillion and no choking at 20Kmph at 4th gear.

Then Deliberately Went into a Deep whole to check suspension came Clean didn't feel it. Now I couldn't check the harshness in Engine above 4K RPM but I told the Dealer unless i get a long test ride i am not buying it So he told me No problem will give it to you.

Dealer Experience not that great but i always find all dealers Very bad to Customers not a shock.

The Old GS 2009 Model i liked the Whole Color In Blue New model i couldn't see in blue. Now coming to Comfort Level one Word "Awesome" The First thing i and my Father were looking the Height Was Perfect I was easily getting both my Feet on the ground Easily but Very little Knee Bent

Overall Very Satisfied i was asking for the Finance the HDFC guy was the one who was very rude I told him your site has up-till 85% finance option you telling only 65.He Told Then Get it Yourself

I valued my Old vehicle Eterno the Owner did the valuation 9K i think whatever problems he told was apt.

So that sums up my experience

                          Dear Nageswer,

We have the required details about break in aka run in on owner’s manual itself
am telling this because i used HH, Bajaj and TVS vehicles where as i didn’t this much in-depth details in those manuals

even the temperature based oil grading details are there in the manual yes its hectic to read and understand that because its a off line material

More over regarding the mileage we should consider the following facts

                          * Nowadays even many reputed petrol bunks are not trustful refer we have a separate thread in XBhp on that

                          * Climate (temperature) while parking on direct sunlight petrol evaporation does eats its share; to save that we need to put at least 7 or 8 lts and at the max avoid parking in direct sunlight

                          * Engine oil Yes engine oil if the engine is not at its best the millage will get reduced [ you have done 1220 kms so ill bet the SVC guys wont change the oil coz it happened for me too they said its not required as you are not reached / crossed 3000 kms mark ]

i just crossed 2200 kms and felt its time to change engine oil coz of the following reasons
1 The oil in engine is completely black
2 As per my favorite local automobile expert mechanic ravi if the oil lost its viscosity the level will increase (in my case the oil level earlier indicates between high to low (in the mid) and for the past 10 days it was slightly above high
3 moreover engine heat is bit high after riding for 20 minutes
4 During recent days clearly feel that bike slightly struggles during initial and mid pickup
5 and at last slight change on engine Noise

Purchased Castrol power1 (grade 15w -40 cost RS 270/- oil of-course its not the best but better than SVC oil

taken out and inspected the old oil the viscosity level not on par (it flows like water and its pitch dark)

                          after changing the Engine oil

Now the engine heat is normal
Regarding the pickup after the oil change i would say my beast is more aggressive
And the noise is gone and its butter smooth again

appriciate the way you planned and executed the test drive

In my case the dealer agreed to give it for 65200 with hand grip, seat cover and indicator buzzer and at that time the suzuki website quoted price was 66500

i bought it on Feb 1st week

moreover i paid him by full cash may be thats the reason for the discounted price
