  • Yeah I understood what you meant (I anticipated this question). Let anyone of 2010 GS owner to post a pic, it will be clear what can be done.

Engineers have designed everything within a millimeter perfection in Honda. By that design only a simple lever is all what needed. But all others use another connector to get the job done(it gives more freedom to place foot peg).

The mechanical advantage is increased by using longer connectors. The point of application of the force and the length of the connector is all that matters. In our GS lever though we are stamping on the toe end since the connector is connected to the middle of the lever the actual connector length is the one marked above. In Unicorn though the lever is directly connected to shaft this length is still longer than GS.

    • Ok, i did some stupid calculations, most of them might be wrong too so i cant guarantee it, coz i dont remember most of the physics i learnt in school but here goes.
Suppose we press the gear lever down by 3cm, the point Y indicated in the figure would move by 1cm approx(if straight path is considered),
When point Y moves by 1cm, point Z would also move 1cm only, irrespective of the length of the connecting rod YZ (again YZ is indicated in the figure)

Possible mods i could think of are, increase the length XY, then we wont have to push the lever down by 3cm, it'll be lesser..
But i dont see how this would make the shifting smoother in any case.. it makes the effort little lesser, thats all i guess..
(or may be these calculations are way off too)

Hey man you have done some quite a bit of thinking . As of now I'm inept to answer these questions. Next day I will consult my Lecturer and will a proper answer . I.M.O. Its not just the movement of the lever that matter but the torque and mechanical advantage we get.........

        • phew phew...finally got my permanent registration number yesterday..
I hav'nt got my smart card[rc book] yet..i was told that i will be getting smart card and original insurance papers within 60 days.. they have just given me road tax receipt n insurance copy[not the original set]....
so am confused..are these documents enough to convince trafic cops incase they get hold of me??

I noticed some sounds from chain cover today...it was there for sometime and then disappeared...i have read some where in this thread about this issue..
          anyone facing same problem??

          • Why its taking so much time to get papers ? I got the Tax receipt, Cess & Insurance on the day of delivery itself. Got the permanent number a day after and got the Registration Certificate after two weeks. I havent tested for pollution certificate yet.

I always carry the drivers manual, tax receipt, cess & insurance papers in original , copy of registration certificate(attested by Counselor) and copy of license(as I have license book). In our area vehicles department mainly stops a two-wheeler if they dont wear helmet or if they over speed.

The amounts the Vehicle Department can levy are as follows (Guys please add more details)
            1. Not carrying license - 50/- (we need to surrender the same later)
            2. Not carrying R.C. - 100/- (we need to surrender the same later)
            3. Parking in non parking area - 100 Rs. and if they tow the vehicle its 200 Rs.
            4. For not wearing Helmet - 100 Rs.
            5. For over speeding and not having documents(All up to your bargaining skills, acting skills and mood of the Officer)

Thanks Manu for the pic. Can you take one more pic from a lower angle so that we can see the connector completely (sorry for the trouble)

output force = input force * mechanical advantage

let us assume a velocity of X m/s given on gear lever, so the angular velocity is nothing but X/A rad/s

              W(FP) = W(PQ) = X/A rad/s

              B, C, D are the corresponding link length (m)

P, Q, R, S are the joints joining the links,

T1, T2, T3 are the angle made by the links with horizontal direction (degree)

By velocity analysis we can derive a relation

              sin(T1 + T2)/V(QR) = sin(T2 + T3)/V(PQ) = sin(T1 - T3)/V(RS)

              here we know V(PQ) = B * W(PQ) m/s

where W(PQ) is the angular velocity of gear lever (rad/s)

from the relation we can find V(RS) and from that we can get angular velocity of final lever C

              W(RS) = V(RS)/C rad/s

              Mechanical advantage (k) = W(PQ)/W(RS)

So Torque acting on the the link = k * torque acting on gear lever
              = k * F * A Nm

where F (newton) is the force at which we are pushing the lever

              • Thanks for the detailed explanation. But it's still unclear what the advantages of this system with the simple system of Unicorn is ? Which one is better ? Bro can you compare FZ's system with GS's and how the mechanical advantage can be increased further.

                • We can increase the length of the link marked in red colour, and we need to increase the length of link marked with green colour slightly in order to maintain the angle as shown in figure

But this will increase the displacement in gear lever to go to next or previous gear

                  • And what if we change the whole lever system to that of FZ? I dont mind using only toe.

                      • On a regular basis I'm getting false neutrals and misshifts when changing from 5th to 6th. Rest all are fine. By using heel it feels like gear is moved from gear-neutral-gear a two stage shift, this started to appear as engine oil crossed more than 1K .

Bro, since the foot peg position is different for FZ and GS and the gear lever is not mounted on the foot peg. Just changing to FZ's lever wont be advantageous rite? Can we design a shifter with toe only to suit our GS ? (Then the obvious answer may be, we already have a damn good one)

I went to my dad's friends house today..
He's around 50 now but he used to be a bike maniac when he was our age, he has lots of experience in tuning road kings and RD350's..

Anyway, first i borrowed a mileage can from him, put 100ml fuel and it went 4.7kms (seems like the mileage is pretty less)..
Then later he showed me some carb and by the looks ok the carb, it tooks like clockwise tuning(making screw go more inside) makes mixture richer since it blocks the path of air. and anti clockwise tuning makes it leaner ! (opposite of wat we've been discussing) i checked that carb properly to verify this fact..
Then i checked my plug, its not black or ash coloured so i guess the mixture is pretty fine..

After that he adjusted the air screw to 3 turns anti clockwise after turning it clockwise fully..
Beyond that he couldn't tell why the mileage has dropped to 47. he said try the can again after giving for servicing and tightening the chain (its loose supposedly, but i never experienced any noise from it even though i could push it quite a bit above that upper part of the ring)

And for the sad finale of it all, he took a test ride and agreed that the shifts are notchy !!! he said pulsar 150 shifts are smooth and unicorn is much better (that makes 3 people who've told me this, 2 friends also said this to me before)

Thanks buddy . This was what I wanted. As Falcon mentioned earlier by replacing the adjustable connector to a simple one Suzuki has done another cost reduction technique.

                                @ Falcon
Just today I found out that the connector of GS is adjustable. Try adjusting the lever and note if there is any change. BTW when I tuned carb as mentioned by MACH50, i too got the optimum setting at 3. Did a fine tuning to 3.25 and now I'm enjoying a mileage of 52 riding they way I want, If ridden without pillion and keeping rpm between 4- 4.5K it will be around 55-60. Do a little fine tuning yourself, nothing will go wrong, just turn a quarter of turn counter clockwise make the mixture a little rich and note the mileage. I'm sure it will work as it did for me.
