Replying a bit old post. The theory that HID is useless for non DC bike is not fully true. You need to understand the battery consumption for HID.

GS has a 9AH battery (new one has 7AH). The charging of battery is done by the engine, which varies with the speed. With higher rpms, the charging is fast, with lower, slow. I read in a thread about battery, that for Unicorn, at 4.5k rpm the battery charging rate matched with battery discharge by HID. Therefore, if you are going to use HID on highways/ghaats/even city roads where the rpms can be around 4.5k, the battery won't get roasted. BUT, you shouldn't then press the battery for other DC needs, like starter or even pilot lamps. My suggestions:

    1. Connect HID to DC power supply coming to headlight console (the mech will do it)
    2. Disconnect the stock pilot lamps, and replace them by LEDs, so that you can use it in city, where you are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.
    3. Don't your the starter, use kick to start the bike. Starter pulls a lot of current from battery.
    4. Use the HIDs prudently, switch them off when not needed, NEVER use them as light source when bike is off.

I fitted HIDs some months ago, and did quite a few night trips lasting 1-2 hours. Each time I thanked the HID to provide me true lighting, and not just a bright candle. Even yesterday, on Satara - Pune highways where cagers drive as if they are playing videogames and bikes and other small vehicles are constantly pushed out of the way big monkeys in bigger vehicles, HID saved me a lot of problems because of the light provided. On Highways, it is a must. Forget other mods if you are a night rider, first save money and go for HID!

Lastly, I understand this is not THE best solution for HIDs, and perhaps what few others are doing, rewinding and APE RR and all is the best way. But I don't think any mechanic in Pune/Mumbai knows this stuff, and already have wasted far too much time searching on them. It just scares me that the non-knowledgeable mechanic may play with my bike's circuitery and may create problems in future. True, the battery may conk off a little early, but better the battery than the bike, and certainly not my life!

Owners of the GS, please help this lesser mortal

And about the model car on petrol offer, is it available in Haryana and/or Chandigarh?
Between GS and ZMA, if less mileage is fine by you, then ZMA, else GS. But GS will ALWAYS bit bit slow than ZMA, keep it in mind.

            • A quick heads up guys - I shifted to Shell 20w40 mineral oil. I wanted to go for motul but the dealer near my place had only 900ml bottle. I wanted to go for 1 litre oil as i was changing the oil after 2.5k km... Will keep u guys posted about the oil.

Just kidding . I use the bike extensively for touring. Did many short and long trips with pillion and lots of luggage. Just returned yesterday, doing 'Samartha Sthapit 11 Maruti tour' in one day! Bike toured for 400kms in a day without any problems. It is an able tourer, and its abilities far exceed the rider's (atleast mine).

As for the saddle bag question, have a look at this thread:

I used this mod on a 10 day trip with saddlebag, and the panels are still shining new. For keeping the tank clean and free from scratches, use bopp tape from 3m before putting on the tankbag.
@ animeher : hey i did 700 kms trip on my gs in 1 day ,the trip was: greater noida-mussourie-greter noida. and ofcourse our gs is a great tourer.

I never found any issues in upshifts... Downshifts were giving a tak tak sound initially... But now whenever I want to downshift I used to bring the rpm below 2.5k and downshift.. Now the shift will be smooth and you wont hear any tak tak sound... I have been using this method for a quite some time and proves to be very useful

That was a good tip. i use to harass the suzuki service dealer on this. this noise reminds me my old splendor. Do we 've any other option?

Yup dude. the shift is smooth. but can't hold the clutch to let the needle settle on 2500rpm. this reduces the bike pick up ability.
