a friend of mine who use to run a bike garage told me that a castrol company guy had told him that: when you buy a new bike, put 10-12 litres of petrol then keep the engine running in standstill for a couple of hours or more. once this is done change the oil. This gives a good life to the engine as the initial running helps the oil to circulate all over the engine & all metal particles are thrown out with the oil change.
Need feedback from you fellows if this really helps...

Well i had opposite experience i actually liked shell the Gears were very smooth after i shifted to Motul the throttle looks as if it is jammed and also clutch has become hard probably this is due to heavy rains in Delhi. But still i will wait and see how motul goes else back to square one Gulf

# just 5 minutes running in idle is enough for the oil to circulate throughout engine.
# we should varry the speed and change the gear to settle the engine during runin, instead running in constant idle speed doesn't make the metal parts to get thrown out much
Visible metal objects wont be with the oil because they got struck with oil filter.
@ electricgoat
Chain loose issue is minor issue only local mechanic can fix it in few minutes.Last edited by MSN1; 09-21-2010, 08:20 PM.Sarcasm is my automatic response to stupidity

80kmph comes@ 6kRPM in 6th gearOriginally posted by shahidshaik View PostHi all,
i own this machine 4 months back and now i clocked almost 5800Kms. i drove all 150cc desi bikes, but riding on GS at 80@6500rpm is so comfort like driving a car. i luv dis bikes.
@Animher, I too have done SMARTH STHAPIT 11 MARUTI.....but in carOriginally posted by animeher View PostEven I heard its a great tourer, but haven't yet seen anyone doing touring a bit. Maybe it is not fit for long distance touring.
Just kidding
. I use the bike extensively for touring. Did many short and long trips with pillion and lots of luggage. Just returned yesterday, doing 'Samartha Sthapit 11 Maruti tour' in one day! Bike toured for 400kms in a day without any problems. It is an able tourer, and its abilities far exceed the rider's (atleast mine).
As for the saddle bag question, have a look at this thread:
I used this mod on a 10 day trip with saddlebag, and the panels are still shining new. For keeping the tank clean and free from scratches, use bopp tape from 3m before putting on the tankbag.

with my family
Yess its a great tourer, i have done 350km in single day it was fabulous trip. bike is very very smooth for high speed crousing.
It was great to drive in ghat sections, i didnt felt anything about lower pickup etc..

AFAIK its not good for break in of Piston-cylinder. bore is provided with cross impressions all over it; for the piston rings to wear. According to my knowldge, there has to be certain load on engine so that piston rings will get loaded n expand in real diametrical manner.
else only bore will worn n piston rings will remain newer(not broken-in)
@ Shahid
Try to speed up the SHIFTING (shift in lesser time)
so you dont loose pickup n smoother shifts as well
some updates..
-Inclined the handle bar a bit to my side
its great now, feels much more relaxed with pillion
-MOTUL 3000 4T is simply awsome, I remember the 1st first ride on my GSR every morning i start drriving.
-pick up is great after chain tightening, and cleaning the spark plug.
Hey i have query...
When i drive in GOD mode avg is around 58-60kmpl
BUTTT when i drive in ECO mode it gives onlyy 45kmpl why????
(same rinding conditions n checked it twice)Last edited by *MIHIR*; 09-21-2010, 09:20 PM.

I already lowered the handle bar as far as possible..(initial position was high for me tooOriginally posted by Raghunandan K.S. View PostSaru try bringing down the stock handle a bit, loosen four screws and bring it toward you and try to ur comfort how much down u can bring it..it will help a lot to get control of bike especially going over pot holes or speed bumps and handling traffic in city...i am 5 11 and for me the stock position was bit high..Now its very comfortable..
As a guide there is a dimple on the handlebar on the right side where it meets the aluminium black clamps it holds..make sure the dimple is below the level of the line where the upper n lower clamps meet..that is a good way to know how far down u wan to go..
ideal position for handlebar of our style is vertical angle should be inline with the fork tubes or a bit inside (towards rider) for maximum feedback and comfort
) and tilted the brake and clutch lever to my comfort.. but try riding a uni and our gs side by side and u know how different both the handle bars feel in weight and ease of handling..

I definitely dont think the GS is good for city driving.. Please give out your honest opinion .. As far as i can see, i find GS not an easy city commuter when comparing with the vehicles of same class lik uni etc..Originally posted by MSN1 View PostGS is good at both [City and Long ride]
ZMR is good for pure highway thrill (i dont know an old ZMR thrills you are not)
GS on long ride no pain gives you the confidance with its road presence strudy vibe free ride at high speed and the road grip
GS on city commuting gives you good acceptable mileage
for more info pm Mach50 for comparo with ZMR and if you have doubt on long rides pm AnimHR

leave factory tune as it is for 1600kms...Originally posted by sameershiraj View PostHi My Fellow GSPians

I checked my mileage after 3 weeks of riding(350+ kms covered). It was 40
the first time and the second time it was 47
.
I will give the bike for first service in a couple of days. Must I ask the SC engineer to tune the carb for better mileage or must i leave it as so???
hey do write down a list of service/adjustments you want..
n write it down on your JOB CARD, when you go for service
ps If you are not happy with focous of headlight, then ask them to lower the height og UPPER beam a bitLast edited by *MIHIR*; 09-21-2010, 11:03 PM.
