he most important aspect for ensuring great performance and long life of engine of any bike is Engine Oil. Engine 0iL is to bike is what blood is to human. The quality and quantity of engine oil matters more than anything else in the bike. Therefore engine 0iL is the most critical maintenance aspect of any bike. The quantity and quality of engine 0iL to be filled is different for each bike model and is given in the OWNERS MANUAL of the bike. Read it carefully and follow it exactly. The procedure of changing engine 0iL is as follows:
Put bike on main stand. Keep a tin can or plastic mug exactly under the drain plug (which is at the bottom of the crankcase). Open the drain plug and let the old 0iL drain out into this can / mug. Keep the drain plug open overnight and let the old 0iL drain out overnight==many hours, so that last drop also drains out. Then in the morning measure and fill the exact quantity through the filler hole which is at the top of the crankcase. Before starting the bike, check whether the engine 0iL is up to the required level. Most bikes have a dip-stick attached to the filler cap, on which the maximum and minimum levels are marked. So measuring the level is very easy and convenient. However some bikes like Hero Honda Glamour, Suzuki Zeus and few others have a transparent inspection window (no dipstick) way down in the crankcase, and it is extremely inconvenient to check 0iL level. For one, a person has to almost lie down on the dirty ground to be able to see it and for another, there is never enough light to be able to see the 0iL level, more so in the bright sun!

For best results, after draining out the old 0iL, it is better to clean the crankcase by flushing it with flushing 0iL. If flushing 0iL is not available and / or too expensive, you can use ordinary diesel. To flush, what you have to do is as follows:

After the old 0iL is totally drained out overnight, next morning fill one litre of diesel in the crankcase. Put bike on main stand such that rear wheel doesn’t touch the ground, and start engine. Let engine run (bike on main stand) in neutral for 20 seconds only. Stop & switch off the engine. Let it cool for five minutes. Start again, put in first gear and run it for 20 seconds. Rear wheel will turn. Let it turn. Again stop engine for five minutes to let it cool, and do same in second gear. Repeat this process of put in gear, run for 20 seconds, stop engine for five minutes and run engine for 20 seconds in all gears. Then when diesel is still hot, drain it out completely, keeping drain plug open for at least 20 minutes. Then fill fresh 0iL. It is best to change 0iL filter every time you change 0iL even if it is synthetic 0iL.
I completely disagree with the thing highlighted in bold, as every blonke in the world knows that engines are designed to run on oil and not diesel or any flushing materials that can severely harm the engine in all the possible ways, If ur ever gonna follow ur method, i would suggest you to run the engine dry as that makes no difference as the viscosity of diesel is nowhere near Multigrade engine oil plus u can get better results in all the possible ways! Jokes apart, can u name one manufacturer that recommends "Engine Flushing"??

To remove the old oil completely , you are gonna use engine flushing agents . but then even some of this liquid will remain in the bike as it also cant be completely removed . better let the new oil mix with little old one than mixing it up with the unknown chemicals in the flushing agent .
The procedure by Dual-disc is the best method .

DILPI BAM enjoyed lots of importace when he was with AUTO INDIA magazine, cuz it was the only auto mag at that time, and how can one forget him when he ranked splendour better than caliber just cuz he owned splendour...

His articles, way of testing bikes (his method at that time to time 0-60 was:
One guy riding a bike,(SUZUKI SHAOLIN WHEN IT WAS LAUNCHED) the moment he used to take off, he flashed light then Mr. Dilip Bam switched the timer on, and the moment that guy reached 60, that too according to speedo he flashed his light again Mr. Dilip Bam switched the timer off, then he used to shave off some milisecs from the time he got saying there was some delay when he switched the light on and i switched the timer on, all according to his mind calculations) was stupid, he may be old but sorry.

dont even consider reading his articles.

Even i was always skeptical about his methods, If somebody asks which is better Karizma or P220 then he goes on and Suggests that both are not safe, I suggest you a STAR city as the bike has excellent low end TORQ and delivers excellent mileage. It has the brightest beam in all Indian bikes and hence is the safest in the country... Dude.. WTF
To top it all he gives funny comparisions like Cheetah=fastest land animal = Lives very less
Tortoise = Slowest land animal = Lives very long!! So buy bike which goes very slow = Lives very long!!!

Dont know about recommendation from any manufacturer. But one of my friend in Bangalore had his engine flushed by some 3M product in his R15.That was recommended by the service people while he gave the bike for 4th service.

Yes you can very well use a 10W40 oil because one should be really looking at the last two digits of the rating i.e 40 which is very well what TVS is recommending. The initial number "10" is infact better than 20 because the oil flow will be better. Also why on earth would i have switched to Veedol from the super brilliant Motul which has a rating of 15W50. The 50 rating would do more harm to the engine as Higher the VI rating thicker is the oil which means it flows less and sticks more to the walls.

Yes you can switch to a good semi-synthetic of XW40 rating.

Thank you very much for the info ..........

                            • Hey all,

Posting this on behalf of a frind, please help me out in here

My friends rtr 180 is about 3 months old, and recently we found that the rear tyre does not roll even when its in neutral. I mean to say even when we swing the tyre reall hard, it hardly makes one rotation and halts (while in neutral). It feels as if something is biting on to it. Cous it be the rear disc pads ??? This problem has been there from day1 he got the bike. The SVC guys claim that its normal and its that way in every rtr

Another issue, the bike had a slight fall recently towards the right side. Ever since then, there is a knock knock sound from the engine. Could it be, anything to do with tappets ?? and there is also some weired knock knock sound from the exhaust.....the whole exhaust is moving around and its a bit loose....feels like some nut/bolt might be lost or broken. Please help out.

                              Thank you.

PS : We are also planning to upgrade the oil....what could be the best brand ? or do we stick to the SVC guys oil itself. ??
