I own an RTR 180, and right from the day i bought it, i notice that the bike stalls/gives jerks untill it touches 4000 rpm. Above 4000 rpm it becomes really smooth, but the moment it drops below it starts giving jerks and it becomes a problem during turns etc ... Has anyone else noticed this kind of behavior on their bikes?? any suggestions on how to resolve it??

They said they checked the problem with the engine and said the cam shaft is damaged, so need to replace it. Honestly speaking, their service is worse than shanthi tvs, engine is still rough, shanthi tvs atleast made my engine smooth of 100kms~, these people have polished my seat with something very slippery and its very uncomfortable, they forced me to go for a oil change@1800kms saying it will make a lot of difference when done at their place, they withou asking me removed the sound that comes when you press the indicator button, by the time i realized it, i was too far away...Originally posted by gixxer_junkie_m View PostWhat did they say was wrong and what did they do in the service?
damn... i wish tvs selected some professionals to do this job...Apache 180

What kind of sound is coming from the engine?Might be tappet sound.Crosscheck this issue with your mechanic(not the ASS) and see what he suggests. If its a carb issue, get it cleaned and tuned. The ASS wont do it for you as they will be hell bent on replacing the camshaft.Dont pay a single rupee if the camshaft need to be replaced. It is covered under warranty. And if the TVS guys dont listen,we have the e-mail id's of the TVS officials.Originally posted by saipranav View PostThey said they checked the problem with the engine and said the cam shaft is damaged, so need to replace it. Maybe they meant Cam-shaft.But still it has got nothing to do with it.What you are facing is a carb tuning issue,so get the carb tuned with a Co machine and everything should be fine. Unnecessarily don't tell them to open up the engine etc, they will learn that you don't have much knowledge about engines and rip you off. Then again if there's a need to replace any parts,it has to be replaced under warranty as long as you got your girl serviced at a ASS.

This is a known issue reported by many around here. But as far as my memory goes, nobody has got a fix for it.Originally posted by Bockscar77 View PostI own an RTR 180, and right from the day i bought it, i notice that the bike stalls/gives jerks untill it touches 4000 rpm. My machine too developed the same problem before second service. I for sure knew that AF ratio is not proper. I complained about it to the ASS. When I went to pickup the bike, it won't start. Six mechanics tried everything they could to start it, but all in vain. The problem was, the spark plug was not getting a consistent current. They patiently changed each electronic part in the machine and tested. Nothing was working. Finally, after an hour the culprit found was a faulty central lock/ignition system. They changed it under warranty.
Now the problem is gone! So I don't know if setting the AF ratio or changing the central lock fixed this issue. I'd say try both.

Like Drifty has mentioned, try to describe what kinda sound the engine is making.Maybe then we can try to suggest some solution.Originally posted by saipranav View PostThey said they checked the problem with the engine and said the cam shaft is damaged, so need to replace it. You have mentioned that the problem goes away after 15mins of riding, that is,when the engine has warmed up.This means that the cam shaft is fine.If cam shaft was was the problem, then the problem wouldn't go away.
Start from the simplest thing:
1. Find a good mech and get the carb tuned with a Digital Tachometer. It would have been better if you could get the carb tuned with a CO machine, but since TVS dealerships are the ones who seem to have em(leaving out other bike's ASS),it'd be futile to get them to do the tuning. As they've already made up their mind that it's a cam problem, they will be adamant about it.
2. Get a second opinion from a local mech who's good at it.
What happens is,if the carb is not in proper tune, you'll get all these problems. So first rule out the carb and air-filter issues before changing parts.Life begins, once you hit the power band !!

I searched for a mechanic with digital tachometer but could not find one, After riding the bike for a long time today, i noticed that the problem of engine switching off has almost vanished... may be it was just a problem with the air filter or an unclean carb and they must have set it right...
And by the way, i said that this particular problem is vanishing after 10-15 minutes... the engine sound is always there, one more thing i observed is, the engine rpm is going up to 2.2k when the engine is used for a long time, (the rpm is supposed to be set at 1.4k when the engine is hot right?) thats what i did, and regarding the sound...
The sound is somewhat similar to the noise of stones rumbling in a tin can... but its not that very high in intensity, if i wear a helmet and ride at 80+, the wind sound dominates this engine sound, so you can understand the intensity, i have also observed that my bike is a lot more vibey than usual(i ignored that since it is an apache) but just mentioning, vibes start at 4k and keep increasing all the way up, vibes are so high that they tickle my palms and feet...
I also noticed that when i switch off and park my vehicle, there is some sound coming like 'tik tik tik' which is not there when i went back to my bike after some time.Apache 180

Firstly, the fluctuation in rpm is a indication that the carb is not in right tune. Then ,the increase in rpm after a long ride means that the A/F is a bit lean.Originally posted by saipranav View PostI searched for a mechanic with digital tachometer but could not find one, After riding the bike for a long time today, i noticed that the problem of engine switching off has almost vanished... may be it was just a problem with the air filter or an unclean carb and they must have set it right...

The lack of engine refinement can be caused by a engine running lean.If the carb is lean, then there will be lot of vibes along with engine noise and there will be a drop in top-end too.Besides that if the oil grade is a thin one, like xW30 ,it would definitely cause a drop in engine refinement after a hundred or so kms, particularly if the engine is running lean.
Is this lack of refinement/engine noise a new thing? or is it there from day one?
Do one thing, when the bike is idling, observe the sound. That is,as to where the noise is coming from.Ask a friend to rev the engine slightly and observe whether the noise is coming from the engine-head or from the bottom half.
I would have asked you to take a pic of the spark plug's center electrode and put it here. But since you are new to it,check the sound and let us know.If possible find a knowledgeable mech and ask him for his opinion.Life begins, once you hit the power band !!

Good that the problem is solved.Again set the rpm when the engine is hot & recheck next time whether you get the same reading or not.If the rpm reading changes then the carb needs to be tuned for correct A/F ratio. And are you sure this noise is very much different than the tappet noise?Because when the engine is hot the tappets make hell lot of noise due to the ultra short stroke engine. It may help us to judge better if you could upload a video of that noiseOriginally posted by saipranav View PostI searched for a mechanic with digital tachometer but could not find one, After riding the bike for a long time today, i noticed that the problem of engine switching off has almost vanished... may be it was just a problem with the air filter or an unclean carb and they must have set it right...

@Gixxer junkie, dead piper, drifty...
Ill try to observe where the sound is coming from, first thing tomorrow, ill also try to take the pictures of the spark plug, actually i should have done that long back, and what do you guys suggest, this sound has been there from the beginning, and i have been asking the ASC guys everytime to check it out...
Do you guys think the castrol bike zones have the carb tuning machines?
If yes ill go there asap.Apache 180

Hey guys, RTR turned 2 yesterday. Now the ODO(cumulative reading) reads 28000+kms. Managed to replace the speedometer(again) under warranty a month back. The bike is as wild as ever and still a hoot to ride. Even the mileage is pretty good which varies from 35-45km/hr. It's been a 2 years of delightful experience with the bike and hoping it continue in the same manner!!

RTR's rule!!!
Hearty congrats bro, 28000+ km in 2 years is simply amazing, and your ride is still as good as newOriginally posted by chicane1879 View PostHey guys, RTR turned 2 yesterday. for years to take, head on
This is indeed a testimony that TVS builds quality bikes, only thing is, you've got to do your part, like run it in patiently, attend quickly to any problem that might come up, giving consistent services etc.,
The Apache is ever willing to red line each cog, but the Rider ain't. Enjoy RTR, Safely. Period.
