    @swift

    Ride the motorcycle for a while... this will make the drive chain warm making the cleaning process easier. Turn the engine off and park the motorcycle on central stand. Cover the rear alloy wheel and parts close to the chain with newspaper to avoid kerosene spill over them. Use a pair of disposable gloves. With an old tooth brush and some kerosene clean the chain thoroughly. After cleaning is done, wipe off the excess kerosene with a cloth. Wait for a while may be some 20 minutes so that the chain would get dry. Use TVS TruSpray or Motul Chain Lube and lube the chain evenly while rotating the tire with your hand.

    Take extreme caution, ensure the engine is off while doing the entire job.

      Thanks mate.
      How often do you clean the chain? Is it mandatory to clean it periodically or, is it enough to clean it only if there is mud/dust on it?

        ^A 1000kms interval between cleaning and lubing a drive chain. On rainy seasons, would be good if it's done every 500-600kms.

        If the chain looks dried up at any time, you may just lube it provided it's not that covered with grime.

              I see, thanks for telling me about that both of you. Reason I'm inquiring about this is that my family is looking for a 2nd bike. That's for my brother, I want a rev happy machine with enough power to please you and still provide great FE.. like 55-60. Not sure if RTR 160 is the right choice though. My NS itself provides 38-40kmpl even under hard ripping sessions. May be I'll check the 160 out in a TVS showroom. Tell me something about the engine oil leaking issues in Apaches, how common is it and how worse can it get ? Also how to convince a showroom person to let me take a long enough test ride alone, without a pillion from the showroom. That's only way I can get to know the bike better without purchasing it.

                I never faced any issue in my RTR 160 in four and half years of ownership, and I don't think engine oil leakage is an issue in Apaches.

                  Hey guys, my ride has been resting at home since 3.5 months due to me having bad health. The battery has either died due to rain water or has run out of charge(Not even the console turns on). I'm thinking of giving it to SVC for charging tomorrow. Anyway, does anything else need to be done apart from removing the screws for removing the terminals and removing the battery from the compartment? Need some tips and warnings if applicable. TIA

                    hey guys, got my bike on 1sept as posted earlier (rtr 180 non abs)! went for first service on 9th sept with 590km on odo. got the service done in 2 hours as i had to attend college right after that there were no complaints during first service. just regular change of engine oil and washing etc. current odo reading is 2100km! changed the engine oil at 1600km again. changed it to shell advance ax5 (mineral oil). vibrations have reduced a bit after using shell. (have gotten used to it anyway :P ) And a special mention to the gear box, it has been butter smooth right from day 1 !! not a single false neutral and finding neutral is very easy. mine was manufactured in aug 2013. and there is also a black coloured disc protector for the rear disc which covers the master cylinder(golden portion) of the disc assembly.
                    got a mileage of 51kmpl during running in and after the run-in phase- 44 kmpl!
                    the only problems i face currently are squeeling noise from front brake and tappet noise which is quite audible :O will get these rectified during the next service!
                    overall very happy with my beast!! an amazing experience. cheers!!

                      Don't keep the acid cell battery in discharged state for long as it cause the sulphonation, which results in dead battery.
                      While removing the terminals remove the negative terminal first. Clean the terminals & give the battery for charging & addition of distilled water.

                          I bought a new tvs apache rtr 160 model from saibaba sales pvt. Ltd, sr no. 19/2, wakad-hinjewadi main road, pune on 18/09/2013. The vehicle is giving me problems form day one. The initial model that I got was making a squeaking sound so they replaced it with a new model. The new model had the same problem so they oiled and lubed everything and the problem was solved. During first service I told the svc guys about engine noise but they did not give any heed to it. Later when the noise became prominent I took the bike to the svc again and this time they agreed to fix it. They took the bike under engine noise problem. When I came to get back my bike they said that a nut was loose in the engine. They also said that they had to change the engine oil which was absurd as I had my engine oil changed 10 days ago during my first servicing. I had also put an addative in the engine oil at that time. They were charging me for the engine oil again which was absued. I refused to pay. Anyway they said that the engine noise issue has been sorted out so they asked me to test ride the bike. After the test ride I found the same noise again. This shows how incompetent and sleazy the svc guys are. This is a new bike. Hardly a month old and I am having engine noise issues and now the petrol tank makes a noise while going over bumps. I also noticed some smoke coming out of engine when I started my bike in the morning(Cold start). Is it the exhaust gas leaking from the engine? The SVC guys said that it is just grease on the engine that is causing the smoke. I find that absurd because how can grease evaporate and cause smoke when I cold start the engine. I am pretty sure it has to be exhaust gases leaking from the engine as the SVC guys didn't do a good job of assembling the engine back after they opened itExperts please help. This is my firt bike and I am having such a horrible experience with it. Had enough of svc mechs. Can any one suggest a good apache mechanic in Pune who can solve my issues.

                            Try to shoot an email to TVS. You can try other authorised TVS service stations like the Century TVS & Rushabh TVS in Pune, these guys are good & most importantly they listen to you.

                              Hi nskaries, as Traveller01 suggested, please send an email to TVS guys.. There is no way that 2 NEW bikes can be faulty let alone one having some many issues mentioned by you.. sme thing does not smell right with this particular svc..

                                I have done 24k and just replaced chain sprocket with the ROLON ones. The handle seems to be bit jammed, should i replace the cone-set too? Only problem with the bikes with the TPS, in every 3k kms it needs to be cleaned/replaced When the engine head should be cleaned?
