Hello People! having a few problems, if somebody can help Me out! I now ride in the city, total of 40 kms daily. Earlier, My bike used to give to superb performance, but from a few days back, its seems to have caught a cold!
1)Once, while riding in city, at 4th gear and 5-6rpm, the bike suddenly lost power! It was like I had suddenly geared down, which I hadn't! Then at same time after a few kms, I got the same problem. Stopped at the side,killed the engine, waited for a few minutes, and after turning it on tried racing in neutral till 5k, worked fine. Still, after starting again, I started filling resistance while going above 5.5k. That day I checked the oil and it was below the extreme mark!
I thought that oil was the issue, and hence the next day itself took the bike to SVC, asked them to change the oil, it turned out to be 700ml! Also asked them to clean the spark plug. This happened a week ago. Now I have again had a situation where My bike lost it's power once in third gear! The main issue being here is, I can't show this to SVC as this problem occurs randomly and they give various reasons like chain not greased etc etc.
2nd being that of the oil mark. I had checked the oil when the engine was cooled, bike was on main stand and the surface was absolutely plain! Also, I checked the oil 2 to 3 times. Then how come, when I measured the oil,it was at the lowest mark and it got out to be 700ml at the SVC!
3) Sometimes the gear pedal gets stuck. It is supposed to pop up automatically after I shift down, but it doesn't. I got it repaired once from SVC, but it is a recurring problem. And I have not been keeping leg constantly on the gear pedal.
4) and a query, can oil have effect on the pick up of engine, I had to put a servo 4t 20w40 multigrade oil (as no other shop was open ealry in the morning) and the starting pick seems to have dropped drastically, and what is the time span of the TVS TRU4 Oil?

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Okay guys, I had to do an early top up on my bike due to the petrol strike scare here in Bangalore. On the day I got my bike I had filled a full 16ltrs. Yesterday when I did a top up, 11.68ltrs fit into the tank. Odo said 560km. That places my mileage at about 47kmpl!
oh, OT : I also managed 666.6km on the odo. Uncanny co incidence no? The beast showing the number of the devil?
Sent from my WT19i using Tapatalk 2
Edit: The mileage comes to 47.94.. so lets make that a clean 48kmpl.

4. TVS Tru4 Premium 10W30 can be used till 3 months or 2500kms which ever comes earlier. Yes, as per the users manual.
You could try Shell Advance AX5 20W40 (premium mineral engine oil). Same drain period IMO but will hold better at high temperatures.The Apache is ever willing to red line each cog, but the Rider ain't. Enjoy RTR, Safely. Period.

@mirhawk :
1) You are loosing compression IMO , ask the svc to look for that.
2) 700ml is slightly less my friend. And svc never showed you the container, am I right , it could be 650-620ml too
3) Get your gear box checked again from a different svc.
4) Your 1st point could be the reason of this loss of pick up. AFAIK oil should not effect pick up, and TVS tru4 last 2000, after that its a risk

Today i found a switch on the right side of my handle in my RTR 160. It's down below the Self Start switch. Any idea what its use.
Also my bike has done around 2500kms, time to change the engine oil, i am not happy with TVS Tru4, planning to go for Shell engine oil. I have confusion whether to go with Ax5 10W-40 or AX7 10W-40. Can any one help me.Last edited by hemnath; 09-30-2012, 04:39 PM.

oh sorry its not the engine kill switch, the self start switch. If you go at the bottom you can see it. I can pulll it like upwards and downwards is it anything to do with the accelerator cable friction.Originally posted by madhav766 View PostUmm, the head light switch,?

Use only mineral oil till 5K km. You can use Shell AX5 or Gulf Pride 4T plus 20W40 (I would recomend Gulf) both being mineral oils.Originally posted by hemnath View PostAlso my bike has done around 2500kms, time to change the engine oil, i am not happy with TVS Tru4, planning to go for Shell engine oil. While Shell AX7 is SS which you can use after 5k km

1. The issue is not very clear. How does the bike go after 5.5k RPM? Try checking your Carb. Diaphragm. It's a big possibility as and when the bike fails to "pull".Originally posted by Mirhawk View PostHello People! having a few problems, if somebody can help Me out! 2. As said by Prateek bhai, maybe it was the SVC guys who got it wrong. In any case 700mL is LESS.
3. The gear pedal is supposed to pop up automatically ??

4. Oil does have a very TINY impact on pick up. When the viscosity of oil is more than the usual grade, it does affect the revvebality of the engine, esp. in cold conditions. But as TVS TRU4 is a thin oil, technically speaking, it should give an advantage of slightly more pickup
PS: The increase/decrease in pickup is too small to be noticed properly, esp if the engine is hot.
Again as Prateek told, TVS TRU4 won't not last in the "oil" state after 2000km

@ Rtrlover83: The reason for asking the oil life was that I had My servicing done 800kms and hardly one month back, and after that the oil remaining was 700 ml only when I visited SVC recently, and all the SVC people were saying that the oil has done its half life thing and hence it is low etc etc. And i have done nearly 10,000k on My bike, so is it shouldn't I switch to SS instead of continuing mineral?
@ Prateek: The SVC has asked Me to come back after 500kms, so will ask them to check the compression then. Can You provide a little more information so that I can explain it properly? And in the SVC where I visit, the waiting room and their work place have a glass in between, and later they called Me and showed the container, it was between 650 to 700ml. They have also returned Me the oil in the container, were I need to put it in again!
@jsg: I will ask them to check that while visiting SVC. Again, it would be appreciated if You could give a little more details. To explain the problem in other ways: it's as if the bike got switched off, there is no high revving sound, and it then turns back on and goes on, and this all happens in just a few seconds! Although the bike doesn't actually turn off and on. It is like a sudden setback type. And the biggest problem being it happens randomly, so I'm not all prepared to note down most things. And yeah, like when we gear down, the gear goes down and it is supposed to come back up again if we have to gear down further.
And Congratulations Prateek! Waiting eagerly for Your review!Apache RTR 180 Bike Parts CatalougeOriginally posted by MirhawkI couldn't repair the Brakes, so I just made the Horn more louder!

@Mirhawk
Sure, go for Advance AX7 10W40 (341 INR) then. Alternatively you could try for Motul 3100 Gold 10W30/40 if it could be sourced (348 INR). Both oils will hold good at high temperatures (will not become watery), give you smoother gear shifts and a pleasant riding experience. Replace them at around 2500 kms or 3-4 months.The Apache is ever willing to red line each cog, but the Rider ain't. Enjoy RTR, Safely. Period.
