And again in the form of an electrical issue!

Was riding thru the city and Bang the bike just stalled, I thought its one of those funny tuning issue so I just thumbed the starter again. Nothing! The thing did not crank at all, it was only then that I glanced at the display and I shocked to see it -Blank- ! Pulled over the bike to side and just tried to reboot it after switching it on and off 2-3 times....Again Nothing!

I knew a fuse had blown, so I pulled out the seat to check the under seat 10A fuse. That was fine! Next checked the 15A fuse next to the battery, that had blown!
Next I put in the backup fuse and the bike just came back to life. But wait the pulsar had not yet finished its nakhra's! I switched on the fuel pump and Bang! this fuse also blew.

With no other option left I called up my PBK mech who came promptly within 15 mins, he tried to make a temp. direct connection which did not work! So we towed the bike back to PBK.

After spending one whole day the cause for the short was found exactly under the pillion seat where the wire bundle that has the connector for the diagnostic tool and the 10A fuse was rubbing against the pillion seats mount had sheared off the external covering and the wire was naked and exposed to the frame of the bike. That was causing the shorting of the circuit and blowing of the fuse. Damn!

As a cautionary note, I would advise you guys to put in a additional layer of tape on the wire set that runs below the pilion seat and has the connector for the diagnostic tool. This is required as that wire is prone to be moved for connecting the diagnostic tool, checking the fuse etc!
Hard Luck...Mate....Towing Your bike to the Pbk....

I live and odd 70 kms away from the nearest PBK....that two two towns away.....

    • @Praful: Is this the case with the P200 too? Really scary thing to even think of something like this happening when you are miles away from any kind of population, in the hills, riding your heart out!

Will check out my bike's fuse and double tape the wires under the seat.
Luckily for me I was to ride out Sunday morning and this prob happened on Saturday afternoon!

Can happen with anybike, depends on how well the wires are taped up on the bike.

Thats really wierd. One of the newer problems that I have heard about.
Yes, I think taping would be a good suggestion in this case.

Well I've always said this about the 220...."Expect the Unexpected!"

            • @praful-Being an experienced campaigner I thought you had already done that.Anyways its better that you faced the problem inside the city and let everyone know about it.

P.S:I had done it when my bike was 3k old.

                Bhai, experienced and me!!!

The 220 is my first bike and I am learning all along the way. Din't know that I have to double tape all the wires on a 'new' bike!

I shall tape up the other wires myself once I get the bike back!

                • Thanks for the heads up Praful,

Its time I tape up the wires of my P220 too.. at almost one and half years it is not exactly a fresh new bike anymore.

Well when I said new it mean a less that 3 years old bike!

Mine is about 16months old now and has done close to 33K. That still means its more or less not an old bike. Still the shearing of the wires I guess has nothing to do with age of the bike.

Another cause for shorting is the wires that run under tank to slightly sag and touch the engine, this melts the outer covering and causes the wire to short again! This happened on John's 220 laster year enroute to Yercaud.

Irony is, I was to head out to Yercaud too yesterday!

                    • @Praful : sad to hear ur story, but i guess it just goes to show tat its better to rely on nimbu mirchi than on 220 electricals

On a serious note, u are lucky it happened in city, if it wld have happened on some long rides to lag jati....
and the problem with 220 is You just cant take it to any other local garage
Aprilia RS 125 or Honda CB400 Vtec ..... which one will it be ??? I think its gonna be NINJA ZX 6R :-)

My GOD! Thirty three thousand kilometres in sixteen months, which means more than 2000 kms. a month! Touring a lot, I believe!?

Seriously man, I'm getting it nimbu mirchi'ed as soon as I get it back from PBK. Its been over a year anyways since I got any puja done for the beast!

@Aryan: My commute to office has been varying anywhere from 40-60Kms round trip, throw in an evening meet with the girl it goes up to about 100kms/day at times. But yes touring about a bit too! Thankfully my new office has a cab service so the kms count has had a slower increase in the past 3 months!

33k?? that too in 16 months?? WOW!! that's some serious riding.

normally a bike is supposed to have an average engine life of 1 lakh kms.. by that yardstick, your bike has covered 1/3'rd of its life..!

                            • AFAIK, Engines are supposed to last 2 Lakh kms!

Yercaud, I will get you sometime!

PS: Where is RaviKiran when you need him, his bike is one month younger than mine and has clocked about 4-5K kms more than mine!
