  • Hi All,

I have a '09 ZMA-R done 20k kms. It was idle for almost 1.5 yrs and I started riding it a year back. The bike struggles as if it is going to reserve when I cruise at around 80kmph(5000rpm), but if I ride at +/- 10 kmph, everything is fine. Now, the bike is becoming super hot and feels like its losing juice whenever I ride at >7000 rpm for more than 5-8 kmps. The heat is very high and I am worried a lot. I change HH 10W30 (Idemitsu) regularly. Also, the brake lights and indicator will go for a toss within 2 days of changing them. Worst, the indicators go within a day and it's causing lot of headaches riding in bangalore traffic without them. I changed the fuse and everything, but nothing's working. If you guys know any good mechanics in B'lore south, please give me the contact details.

    Thanks!

    Krishna

Idle for 1.5years? You'll need to take out the tank, carb and airfilter and completely clean every spec of dirt. Check the electrical loose connections and offcourse battery.

My camera got damaged. that's why I am not posting any Pics recently. It is a simple job but patience is required. All you need is a star screw driver. And a t- type spanner of size 10. There are lot of star screws to be removed. Everything comes off easily. You don't have to pull or apply force on any part. If it is not dismantling you may not have removed some screws. Refitting time you should know where the screws are to be inserted and which type of screws.

OT: I wont be attending ISG2G this time. It is clashing with my exam dates. Have a happy ride, Ride safe.

          • Hi All,
This is my first post though I have been reading many ownership threads in this forum regularly.
I am actually a car person - did not ride bike in last 9-10 years, but due to a) rising fuel costs and b) feel that riding a bike atleast once/twice in week will add that missing flavor to otherwise routine and boring life

After lots of thought and reading, I am inclining to buy Karizma, my reasons are a) refined bike b) comfortable for 30 km one way commute c) reilable d) powerful bike can cruise at 70-80 km/h without breaking a sweat.

            I have following questions:
            1. Is this bike at the end of its life? Are the spares available easily
            2. Is it possible to fit panniers or a box at rear - even after extensive search I could not find any pics /reference. It will be great if somebody can give a pointer
            3. Is it possible to fix heel/toe shifter

All these three questions are very important for me, and responses from this learned community of enthu Karizma riders will greatly help me.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

            Best regards,

            JLS

If you are planning to own a bike to cut cost on fuel, give it a second thought, because the Karizma is not the best when it comes to FE.

              I have following questions:
              1. Is this bike at the end of its life? Are the spares available easily.
Yes Spare are available. Also most parts have replacements from other bikes/makes. So not much of a worry

              2. Is it possible to fit panniers or a box at rear - even after extensive search I could not find any pics /reference. It will be great if somebody can give a pointer
Yes it is possible to fit a top case on the ZMA. But it will affect the stability of the vehicle on higher speeds(read above 100-100) more so with added cross winds on the highway.otherwise the top case is good investment

              3. Is it possible to fix heel/toe shifter

The ZMA comes with a toe shifter. if you are used to shifting gears with the hell, the you might have to get a piece welded to the lever. I dont think theres any direct swap from other bikes

All these three questions are very important for me, and responses from this learned community of enthu Karizma riders will greatly help me.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

              • Karizma with Spoke Wheels!! Don't know how many will like this!

                Hey Zma-ites,

The bike had been around for two years, clocked 32000 odd kms. And.. I wanted to do something crazy.. So of all other options, changing the wheels sounded like a good option. The tyres were worn out anyway! So my friend, who is the man behind the fabrication/modification himself (he runs a garage of his own) hunted down the following spares from the market:
1.) Impulse front and rear rims- Yes, 19" front and 17" rear and stock tyres off the impulse (new ones, of course)..
2.) CBZ classic (old ones) rear drum, hub and front hub.
3.) Thick steel plate to machine an adapter to fix the stock break disc to the front wheel hub. and.. thats it..

It took around 3-4 days to "engineer" the fitment and it fits well. Please take a moment to check the pic.

                The differences are less:

1.) Front shocks have become hard, quite obvious.
2.) Not much increase in torque, but slight increase can be felt while riding on 3,4,5 gears.
3.) Mud-guard had to be modified (chopped to be precise).
4.) It is a nice ride when compared to the stock (NYLO-SLIP i call them) tyres- its smooth and the rear suspension has become quite soft for the pillion.

I am going on a ride till Ooty this weekend, will update more differences, (if any.LOL).

Hope you guys (atleast some..??) like this.

                Cheers and ride safe!!

                Karthik

PS: the mud-guard seen here is a makeshift one.

                • Hey Phanikar, thanks for a quick reply....

Yes, I am aware Karizma is not a bike with a best FE, but I am comparing with Accent (15 Km/L), See, my perspective is totally different. Also FE argument is also for making a pitch to better half - who is totally opposed to me starting to ride a bike at age of 40+ !!!

Appreciate you posting a pic with Top Case - I am not looking to drive at 100+ speed, hence not worried about stability much. However does this top case become hinderence for climbing up/down for a pillion? Also are there any eligent looking small panniers/side boxes?

Once again thanks for reply and will appeciate any more details reg my queries.

                  Thanks

If your requirement is for commutation between work and home,
If you want slightly better mileage,
If your speed do not exceed 100,

I can suggest Honda Unicorn. Value for money even if you buy a decent second hand one. But if the above want to be clubbed with some power than mileage, then it has to be ZMA-R. Side boxes might not be compatible in this age's bike model.

                      1) The bike is outdated. But still some qualities of the ZMA are still not matched by other bikes which came later on. It has a class on its own.
                      2) Fixing boxes at the side is doubtful. Fix a tank bag or just fit one on the grabrail like in the above pic.
                      3) can be fixed by welding. I don't know if any other bikes shifter is compatible.

ZMA is a good bike. But overall customer care and service quality is a big time head ache with Hero. And nowadays spares are available easily( most of them) and experienced local mechanics can do a wonderful job with the bike.

But the post 2011 ZMA's lack quality in parts especially body parts. Initial glitches will take atleast 5000 kms to identify and rectify.

but I enjoy every moment with my bike. Maintainable , reliable engine, and you will love the torque ( except bullet owners) and handling.

Yeah saw the pic, and corrected my chain slack, guess it was the reason behind the scraping sound when cornering. Surprisingly transmission feels smoother too after the adjustment. Also did lube it with SAE90 Gear Oil.

Are you sure that the fuse(s) replaced had the correct rating?
If a higher rated fuse is replaced for a lower rated one, you'll see electricals getting blown every now and then!
