Hi guys,

I have a query with my ZMA, hope ppl around here myt be of help!!
I am facing a weird problem with my ZMA, Its been a year & a half old & 14k KMS done. engine shuts off all of a sudden when on a ride in the city & rejects to start. previously when i remove the tank cap for few secs & reinsert will sort the problem. but these days it doesn't work in that way. it starts, seems good in the idle rpm & when i start accelerating it again shuts off. i need to pull the choke on if i need to move it forward. its a serious headache when in the city. will get stuck in the middle of the traffic. told about it with the service guys couple of times. when i take it back from the service guys it would be fine for few days, & then again starts to show the same problem. few days back i had kept it for service in HERO service station for the 7th service. had told the issue with the service guys. they told carburetor cleaning will kill the issue. when taken back it was fine till yesterday, today again it showed the same problem.
Did anyone faced the same problem with your ZMA??
If yes plz help me out sort it down guys.
will be waiting for the experts reply..

Your carb settings are way too lean! Get the AFR adjusted to 3.5 turns approx and you'd be good to go. If this fails, you'd need to look deeper into the carb to see if the carb slide gets stuck (not sure if it causes stalling) or it maybe the diaphragm has gone bust. Get the AFR adjusted first.

Sir,
actually i had kept her for service this monday in HH service centre. i had told about the problem with the service guy & he told it was becoz of the worn spark plug socket (that red thing which is plugged into the spark plug) & had replaced that with a new one. he had even cleaned the filter & carburetor, & also adjusted the AFR to 3.5 turns. but dunno how, problem is still not sorted

could be the diaphragm in the carb is damaged or jets getting blocked... there may be water/dirt in your petrol tank.. get your tank emptied/cleaned and check again.
the only other thing i can think of is the electricals..Cdi etc..

preetham78 :- Do check and set the AFR (Air Fuel Raito) screw to 3.5 turns as Divya Sharan says. Report to this thread to know the outcome.

If your digital meter stays on when your bike stalls, then this seems to be a carb problem. Else it would be electrical. Now as far as I know Hero Honda/ Bajaj service center folks, even if they recognise a fault with critical and costly components like carburator, engine head assembly, magneto, clutch/gear, etc, they wont come up and either tell it on your face or replace it even if in warranty. Unless you get up and smell the coffee and report it directly with the main company folks. In our case that would be the guys in Delhi. Now these peole have an engineer who roams the whole country on a regular schedule just to diagonise and resolve sticky issues which are reported to Delhi. I suggest you should give your service center an ultimatum and say( very politely and sweetly) that you want a permanent solution at a mutually agreed time. Or else they will just clean up the carb and return the bike. If they default on this agreement, then call up Delhi and report the problem directly. That will get your service center on their toes pretty fast. All the best

Ok.. now what i doubt is water inside your fuel tank.. and water in carb.. removing the water from the tank and carb will fix the problem..

If the bike idles but when you try to accelerate it shuts down, you have CDI connector loose contact...if so, open the seat, and just give a small shake to the wiring harness near the CDI connector...

I finally decided to be my lazy self and left the bike at the HH SVC yesterday evening. I warned (by using strong words like please, kindly help ) saying that I'm not at all satisfied with the bike or their service. I listed out all these components and said I wanted them to be replaced as some of them are mandatory. The supervisor said they'll check and only replace if required. He assured me that it'll be satisfactory this time.

I collected my bike just now and here's what they did:

Engine oil changed, supplement added, clutch cable changed (rs. 71.25), front pad set (Rs.1123.85). On questioning why air filter, plug, chain/sprocket set and other cables were not changed he said they're perfect and do not require replacement now.

What's interesting was, I've asked about the speedometer behaving oddly (It shows 20kmph if I'm on 40kmph). He says there's a component LED in the speedometer console and that part has to be changed. They do not have it in stock and will change it later.

Anyone has any idea what this part is? I referred to the catalogue and the only item that sounded similar was "speed sensor assy".

They will always say its fine but its you who should initiate and say that you want it changed

With the number of Kms you gave done you definitely needed a change

I suggest you give them again and say just do what I say types and with 30k Kms on odo if I remember right you needed then sorted

Had you ever changed accelator cables and chain sprocket set?
How does bike feel now?
